a toe hold is an americana/paintbrush on the foot. Yes you grip under the knee and control the foot with your other hand then when you secure the grip you bend his foot twisting it down over your own wrist while lifting your at the same time. Done properly you can separate a person's ankle from the rest of the foot since a toe pops those ligaments. Its my best leglock.
