@MsAB99 I am such an otaku. I can't get enough of asian culture. I love the history, people, movies, et cetera. If I could, I would live in China or Japan.
It wouldn't be the same - I don't say that sentimentally, I mean it literally.
The music here is petatonical, normally in the West, it's heptatonical, the lyrics fit with the song due to the tonal nature of Chinese, following the petatonical nature of the music and language.
So it wouldn't work in any Western atonal language.
Do you mean pentatonic? Pentatonic scales are popular in all types of world music, especially more traditional folk types, though the actual notes being used may differ. Though this piece has similarities to traditional Chinese music, it is a modern composition. And tones are not used when mandarin is song for obvious reasons. In fact I believe the translation given to this poem being song was specifically translated to be song as it is somewhat awkward.
Yeah, pentatonic, it's mainly used because it can't really lose its harmony. But I'm pretty sure its mainly used by the Oriental countries, because it has such a distinct sound. I know the music for this is a modern composition, but it follows the pentatonic structure of, uhh, G, I think (I think its going G,B,C,D,F...or something...)
I'm pretty sure mandarin is a tonal language, and thats why pentatonic scales is most intimately linked to the Orient, because it follows tonal structure...
One type of pentatonic scale is common in oriental music. But folk music around the world also uses variants of the pentatonic scale. Irish and Scottish folk tunes make extensive use of it as do many native american cultures. Mandarin is a tonal language. The point though was that it is irrelevant. When mandarin is song tones are not used. And all scales follow a "tonal" structure, that is what makes them a scale.
The type of pentatonic scale used in the Orient is used for melody, unlike the other examples (I think, anyway...)
Mandarin has 5 main tones in it (as well as ascending and descending), which is why I used it. As a tonal language, following the pentatonic scale, it helps give a direction to the music, plus relevant metaphors an atonal language like English couldn't provide, without losing some of the intelligence behind it.
I think thats a theory why more Orientals possess perfect pitch.
Contrary to what you say, pentatonic scales are almost always used for melody precisely because they can be harmonized very easily. 'Amazing Grace' for example is purely pentatonic. Mandarin has 4 tones. And again when it is sung mandarin doesn't use tones; Imagine trying to sing a rising tone on a falling note. The words of most mandarin song are distinguished not by tone but by context and a popular understanding of the subject matter. And English is not an "atonal" language.
I don't know why, but the last 17 seconds were y favorite. I think it's because it doesn't sound like she's singing, but rather it being a voice-over. Gives it a very ethereal feel.
I Actually Never Seen All The Behind Scenes Stuff , So If Had To Choose Id Say This Is My Favourite Scene , Then The Echo Game , Then The Final Scene With The Dagger Pulled From Her Chest , But She Never Through It At Him , Its Gripping!
What About The Echo Game Shes Really Good, With The Sword Tied In Her Robes And Stuff Thats Cool , And The Captain Of The Police Is Really A Flying Dagger :O!
That's a really cool and impressive scene! But after seeing how they did that behind the scenes, I tend to gravitate towards this dance scene more. If I had to place it in a list, I guess the echo game would be my third favorite scene.
really, if you have someone you care about in your life, this movie will probably change the way you think about that person. You don't realize how valuable things REALLY are until you lose them.

A rare beauty in the north, she's the finest lady on earth.
A glance from her, the whole city falls; a second glance leaves the whole nation in ruins.
There exists no city or nation, that has been more cherished
Than a beauty like this
