  • haha, free child labor

  • @0:40 - Awesome - get the kids into it!!!

  • I heard Scarce "All Sideways" playing in the beginning. Right on!

I lurve that song! So did you use the hops green or did you dry them out later?

  • Cutest garden helper ever!

  • Hey, did you find that the vacuum bags crushed the hops?

  • well sure it crushes them up a bit but that is not a problem. they go into the boil pot just the same. :)

  • thanks for the video! Wondering what you use to decide when the hops are dry enough to go into the vacuum packing... Is it a certain ratio of wet to dry weight that you are going for or some other gauge?

    Thanks so much!

  • Yes that is right. When dry they are about 1/5 of the wet weight. Example, 35 oz wet becomes about 7 oz dry. I have read that this is the way to look at it, and in my own experience it seems to work that way too. Good luck. (Oh, For me this takes 2 days of sitting on a screen in the garage).

  • Thats good info to know. I've got a small cascade I started this year that I want to take a number of root cuttings from for next spring, and the harvest on it seems worth doing in the next few days. What a prolific grower and producer, really impressed with the speed and vigor the hops takes on. Excited to expand it out a whole lot next year. Best of luck to you, keep sharing the great videos!

  • awesome vid. how many years have you been growing those?

  • 2005 was the first year. cheers.

  • great vid. how did you dry them and how long did it take? did you just leave them on the screen or have a fan on them also?

  • no fan, just on the screen. it takes 2-3 days to get really dry. sorry, didn't see your question until 5 months later. :(

  • did you get a bigger yield with 3 shoots per string?

  • Good question. I found that I got the same whether I had 1, 2, or 3 bines per string. It must have more to do with how much room there is for the leaves and hops to grow than how many bines you train. I don't know what I will do this year...

  • This is super killer, stuff. I've enjoyed your web site as well, and am (finally) getting into all-grain brewing. Thank you for the inspiration. Good luck!

  • Right on! Nice harvest - similar to my own (Whidbey Island: Horizon, Centennial, Chinook, Saaz, Hallertaur, Goldings, Fuggles). The English hops do best, nice aroma/flavor, with the noble varieties..not enough sun here for the high-alphas.

One trick I finally learned (purely asthetics) is to flatten the bag w/my hands as I'm vac-packing, you get a nice flat stackable pouch instead of the crinkle nightmares..you can kind of control the shape as it compresses.

    Great video, have fun!plant more

  • congratulations!

  • Nice Vid! I harvested for the first time this year, planted the rhizomes back in april, and I was pleasantly shocked at how much my plants yielded. I have not weighed them, but of the 4 rhizomes I planted, I got what looked to be about double what you had on your screen. Not bad considering I thought first year plans. Ohh btw I planted 2 nugget and 2 cascade. How long should they be air drying?

  • Nice Don. I harvested just last weekend and have yet to edit my last hops project video. Hope to finish and get it posted tomorrow. I only had about two or three ounces total!
