Just before I stopped playing runescape (I know shameee, shammee xD) I saw all of these people who were setting up trade unions; a couple of elite runescapers would check the graphs for some time and at some point decide what product to buy. Because there were trade unions of upto 800 people, who all started investing millions buying the product at highest price, prices shot up (or were supposed to). Then when prices were extremely high they would give the sign to sell, if lucky you made profit

@comedy129 most owners of merching guilds get people to join, and make the price rise of the items by buying em, which causes high demand, high demand=higher price. but then the owners and close friends all sell those items once the price has gone up, and people are still buying thinking they can sell it back later, but then when they try to sell, no one buys cause the whole clan is selling it, and then you just end up loosing money.
