Ok this is good but its not better than diana's just a little different...... u can tell her voice is takin atoll from her over singing..... not what it once was
@charlottedrenee No one cares if you think its not better than Diana's. This is Aretha version not Diana's. And you can shut that shit up about Aretha oversinging, Aretha has never oversang. The reason her voice has changed is because she was a chain smoker. This version has more passion and conviction than Diana's. Aretha knows how to make a song hers.
WHy don't singers do this anymore? Aretha sung her contemparary's songs. She sung Beattles, Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Glen Campbell. I'd love to hear a Pink bust out with Mary J Blige song.
Aretha was very tame for her in this performance. The smoking may have affected her voice somewhat, but not enough to hold her back altogether. I feel that much of her power and clarity has come back, since she gave up the cigarettes in around 1990, and her voice was very much rejuvenated, ie remember the 1998 Divas when she blasted all of the then top female singers off the stage. Aretha will always be remembered for the voice that nobody else could ever match. Long live the Queen
You make great points, but I'm confused by your statement that her clarity came back in the '90s. I think she's progressively lost power and range over time. Still, her tone and timbre have remained brilliant. She knows how to work with whatever she's got on that particular day. I loved her on that Divas special, but I think it's safe to say Celine outsang her that night. Having said that, she's still the Queen and this is an incredibly lush and soulful performance of Diana's song.
Agreed,Re then 56 did not falter one bit when singing with singers who at the time were in their prime. Aretha brought it home on the Diva's stage! Celine stood in awe of Aretha!
This is actually a very nice performance of a Diana Ross song by Aretha. I remember over 20 years ago Aretha had a new CD out and a radio DJ noticed It's My Turn listed on the CD. He played it wondering if it was a remake of Diana's song. It was. The DJ said OMG what was she thinking! Her people must be afraid of her. The shouting and screeching were over the top and horrific. Here she is just singing a song she loves. A fan to a fan tribute, instead of a competition.
Well you and that Dj are out of your damn minds. Aretha recorded version of It's My Turn is soulful and full of emotion. Aretha was shouting or screeching and nothing about her interpretation was over the top. She brought emotion to that song, something Ross doesn't fully bring. Aretha's version was perfect, when Aretha does an cover of someone else material, it's never about competition, it's about about give her own interpretation. And i feel that Ree's version is better.

i love Aretha, but this song clearly belongs to Diana!!! It was a huge hit for the Queen of Motown, while its nice to see the Queen of Soul pay homage to Miss Ross by singing her song!!!
diana the prettiest woman. please she was ugly. but ugly aint nothing pretty about that woman, out of the big 4 shes the worst and arethas the best. show me a pick of the big 4 and well see who looks the best. and the big four is tina, gladys, aretha, and diana.
There is only one "Queen of Soul" when you don't know the history, you start throwing out titles for other singers. Diana Ross like I said it good at what at what she did back then which was pop more than soul. Soul is James Brown, Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Glayds Knight, Patti Labelle, Chaka Kahn etc. When you know from whence it came you know were it is going.
It is not what the woman looks like, it what she does with her voice, Diana could never been in a class with Aretha Franklin, no matter how much you love her. Her voice is not strong and she has been showed up by Patti and others. Aretha can sing anything from Gospel, R&B, Classical, Jazz, country , etc.
What the hell is a dream woman? Someone who loves you through it all. Diana is good at what should does but she cannot touch the real singers.
I am not from that era either but i love Aretha and soul music. The music today lack a lot of substance so i had no choice be to go to the old school music and i found Aretha and i never came back.
Real singers, you must be kidding, diana has surpassed everyone of them, the world disagrees with you. diana realized long time ago that singing "loud" does not equate with good singing, its all about one's tone and interpretation of the music and diana is the best bar none in that regard. aretha's great at what she does without a doubt.
She is good as what she does...Aretha is not a loud singer. Aretha is great doing Jazz, Opera, blues, gospel, R&B the list goes on. Please don't not compare Diana Ross to Aretha.
When your vocals are limited you do what do best but Aretha can do it all. And the world knows she is the Queen of Soul. And she was invited to sing by our new President Barack Obama. Royalty has it place and the Queen is still on top .
diana has a wide breadth of music over the years, jazz, blues, pop, r&b smash dance hits and beautiful ballads, she's been very successful in all of these genres except gospel and that's why gospel fans seem to think she has limited abilities while the rest of the world does not. I'm comparing diana to aretha on this one song and yes diana still owns it.
Please Ross hasn't surpassed shit. Diana is a joke. A gimmick at best and alway will be. No one knows understand how to approach a song like Areta her interpretations in her music surpasses Diana limited approach. Diana is not a great female singer. She was a weak singer that lack vocal ability. She was never the Queen of anything especially Soul she may be the queen of weak singers. I have heard Diana live she was nothing to tell mama about. Aretha now in her prime could sing Diand and anyother singer out of there shoes. And she still can.

Well i show Diana respect and she my be your Queen of Soul, but Aretha Franklin is truely and the only Queen of Soul. Everybody calls Aretha "The Queen" no Diana. And how is she going be the of Soul when she is a pop singer. That doesn't make sense.
Diana Ross is a very talented woman. She is truly the greatest female soul singer on our world. She is for me (like I said many times before) "The Queen of Soul". And I will not change my opinion about her!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Diana was a talented performer but not singer. She was not a great singer let alone the greatest. Diana was a pop singer. Aretha is the soul singer and the Queen Of Soul for that matter. Aretha is the only Queen of Soul she doesn't share that title with no one esecially a poptart like Diana. No one calls Diana that she has never in her life been a soul singer. Their is only one true Queen of Soul and that is Aretha. Case closed.
Aretha does a good job here, BUT she has NOT the Class, Beauty, Talent and great Voice of Miss Diana Ross - "The Queen of Soul", who recorded the orginal version of this f*cking great song!!
Aretha is far more better singer than Diana was and will ever be. Diana had a good voice but she was never in the same league as Aretha. And Diana has never her life been the Queen of Rat let alone the Queen of Soul. Diana is not a soul singer. She sang pop all her life and she ain't even the Queen oF Pop. And Class Diana doesn't have class if it was for her baby daddy she would even be famous.
Diana ain;t no soul singer she was a poptart singer she never was that Queen of Soul and never will. Diana was not the one to bring soul to it golden days Aretha was. Soul was taken serious until Aretha came along And Aretha is very beautiful especially in her younger years. Aretha was in a class all by her self. Diana was good but she was in Aretha league vocally. Diana was never all that of a singer. Now she was the one with only a little bit of talent.
TheQueenAretha, what you talk here is mega bull f*ck sh**!!! Diana Ross has much more talent as Aretha Franklin! She is a great singer, a great actress, etc. Diana Ross & The Supremes made soul music popular NOT your personal Queen!! I've just googled for Aretha pics in younger years, she was also not beautiful to that time. Just my opinion!
No it is you who is taking the bull sh*t. The Supremes were a pop group. They did nothing for soul they just made black pop music popular. But when Aretha hit it big in 1967 Soul was take to it glory. Soul would be what it was without Aretha. And as far as talent Aretha was wayyyyy better singer Diana was limited she could do the thing that Aretha did with her voice.
MOTOWN was the record company, which made soul music popular around the world. The Supremes started in 1964 to make soul music popular, so it was earlier as Aretha's turn. Also because of Diana Ross, I started to listen soul music.
I must say here something; I know the name "Aretha Franklin" since the late 80s. Before that time, I've never heard about her!
Motown was black pop,rnb company. The Supremes didn't make Soul music their music was very bubble gum pop. I wasn't until Aretha signed with Atlantic Record (which was a real Soul/RnB Record Company that Soul took off. The stuff that Motown put out was watered down to say the least. Diana had no hand in making soul what it was. It was Aretha that took soul to it prime.
And on top of that Aretha was a song writer and a pianist. Their is very little Diana could do she was in no way more talent than Aretha who got her by far. And Aretha was a very beautiful girl. Just look at some of her old videos. And Diana ain't prettys she need alot of makeup to be pretty. Aretha was very pretty. And
TheQueenAretha, to say here that Aretha Franklin, is more beautiful than Diana Ross, that's truly one of the most ridiculous comments, which I've ever read in my life! LMFAO. I know taste for women can be different like taste for music or other things. Aretha Franklin, is everything but not a beautiful sexy woman!!! Also to say here, that Motown Records is (was) not a SoulMusic company, that's also mega bull sh**!!!
Aretha was a very beautiful woman. I never said she was more but Diana was not more beauitful than Aretha. And Beauty has nothing to do with talent. Aretha could were a sack as a dress and she would stilll be an amazing singer Diana had to wear pretty to to be good but Aretha could wear anything and she would be great. And Motown was not a Soul Music company the were a black pop RnB company there music a catchy but very watered down.
Diana in the 80s and 90s looked like a scarecrow. She was never a great singer, she was good but Aretha was the best singer out of her generation and she was very beautiful woman. And i don't have to look at wikipedia to know that Motowns music was watered down.
You can say all you want but Aretha was a beautiful woman there is nothing wrong with my eye and Diana was not a pretty woman. She looked 40 whne she was 20.
Aretha was NEVER a beautiful woman!!! Diana is still today one of the most beautiful darkskinned woman in the world! I love her black eyes a lot! In the 80s Diana looked like a teenager, I've always thought, that Whitney Houston is older as Diana. Btw., how old is Aretha? I would say something between 80 till 90. Is that true?
PS: TheQueenAretha, are you female or male? And are you interested in women?
Diana looks like a clown with all that make up. Aretha was and is a beautiful. In the 80 Diana looked just like a 50 year old clown. And Aretha in this video look great. And i am a woman but it doesn't i like guys but it doesn't take a fool to know that Aretha was a very pretty lady. And why are we even talking about look that doesn't make you great Aretha is uncomparable.
TheQueenAretha, I consider myself as a very tolerant person. I accept the opinion of others, also when they are the opposite of mine. You said you are a woman and you are so obsessed with the look of Aretha, I'm sure you look the same way!! It's okay with me. But a woman on my side, must be slim (and beautiful), otherwise an intimate relationship would never work!
Diana Ross is still looking great, she has given birth to 5 kids. Aretha is the one, who looks like a clown NOT Diana! lol x lol

And i am not obessed with Aretha's looks. The reason i am a fan is because of her talent. It seems that you the only one that is obessed with the way a person looks because you brought it up. I bet you are one of thoughs people of think a singer has to dress great tobe great and that is bullshit. Diana could the best outfits in the world and she still wouldn't be great.

I am a girl but that doesn't mean that i don't know who is beautiful or not. I think Diana and Aretha were both beautiful woman but Aretha was more talented than she was and that all i look for in a singer a great voice not image.
Aretha Franklin is absolute NOT a dreamwoman for many men! She can (could) never walk on a catwalk as a model. A dreamwoman, is a woman, who is beautiful for the majority not for the minority! Diana Ross was a dreamwoman (80s till mid 90s) for millions of men around the world and she's still an attractive woman, no doubt about. Also like I already said before, she's more talented as Aretha. I'm sure Aretha Franklin herself knows this.

Aretha back in the day was a dreamwoman. She was very beautiful. But that stuff don't matter if and Diana was not a woman that man would have went for she look like Micheal jacksons twin sister.

I bet you don't know a thing Aretha in the first place. Aretha in te 70 was gorgeous with her honey blonde hair. Diana the most pretties woman back then she look she was boney and looked ike she was about break in half.
no doubt i love every delicious drop of ross' version of this song, but i dig this too more than aretha's studio version. there's a personal testimony here that makes comparisons, between the two legendary women, mute. aretha's using the song to witness about what only she can tell when she sings it. i dig her little grunts and moans on this. crazy love for miss ree ree and miss ross. so glad i was growing up when these two ladies came on the scene and took over. lucky me.
I adore this woman...but for the love of GOD, I wish she had never smoked cigarettes. Geez, those deathsticks have really done a number on her pipes, man...
i like Aretha's version of this song, she brings soul to this verison, Diana brings a compassionate classy style to her version, and Patti brings Power and strenght to her version....
do anyone have any video about aretha's personal life? an intimate ortrait of her personal life and how other singers talk about her? i'd like to see it
Aretha has stated before that Diana's version of this song is what gave her the impetus to cover it. Aretha put her stamp on the song in this version no doubt. But Diana's version was how the composers intended it to sound like...fo sure
The entire performance at Park West was done under tremendous pressure. Aretha feels that she has to be responsible, even if she is no mood for singing, which she wasn't here. As I posted, Carolyn Franklin, her brother Cecil, her grandmother had all died in quick succession. It took all Aretha could muster to sing ANYTHING during this period.
I can't say this is a bad version but somehow , the intimacy seems to vanish. If you like vocal exuberance watch Patti Labelle's version, you can't ask for more. it's just perfect!
Without feeling? Listen to it and not look at the picture and if you say she is singing without feeling. YOU not her must be souless.
The only problem I hear is that she is not portraying the feeling of the song. The song is a more of a truimphant song. Talking about I'm taking back my life. If you just listen to this version it sounds like she is giving in.
Like someone said Aretha was going through a lot of stuff but to say without feelings is SO WRONG
i dont understand how (or why) people try to compare these 2 completely different artists??? dianas' voice is soooo different you cant compare at all.. aretha has strength yes...diana has that heart felt presence in every song she sings....both have different qualities
Aretha has a wonderful talent to interpret a heartfelt song and deliver it with so much soul and pure emotion. But at the same time, the years have left her voice ravished. Aretha place her signature on this song.
I agree totally with totorreys assessment of Diana Ross' rendition..Patti labelle did it as part of a medley as a tribute to Diana Ross on soul train?
ramiakin and totorrey I agree with you... usually Aretha is a great interpretor of songs and makes them her own. However, in this case, I prefer Ms. Ross' rendition.
Aretha was going thru a LOT of death in her immediate family here. It showed in her singing. She was really hurting deep in her heart. At times, she seemed to be fighting back the tears.
Yes, from the "Love All the Hurt Away" album... I remember my dad had that on vinyl, and even though I was only about 9 years old, this song blew me away.
I don't think Aretha was so hot on this. Re is my personal favorite and ordinarily can sing circles around Miss Ross and anybody else. Not this time. This arrangement was awful, she didn't sing with the melody, which I typically relish in her performances, and her voice was not good that night. I couldn't even listen to this thing in its entirety. Diana's rendition is much, much better: prettier, simpler, and with the melody.
WHAT??? When have you EVER heard Aretha sing the melody of ANY song. SHe always turns and twists them to her own fashion. Listen to YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE, THE WAY WE WERE, even BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS, all on YouTube. Even when she records, she veers off quite a bit from what the composer writes. Thats why she and Luther fell out. Curtis Mayfield also.
Either you didn't fully read my comment or you don't know what relish means, because as I stated previously I normally enjoy the fact that Aretha does not sing with the melody, but this time I don't think it worked.
Actually, Miss Ross STILL does this song from time to time. Then again, when you have a catalogue as large as Miss Ross', why should you do the same songs repeatedly.
it just occurred to me that Diana Ross recorded this song first and would sing it in concert from time to time. after Ms. Ree recorded it, Ross left it alone!!! All hail the Queen of Soul!!!!!!!
Actually she still sings it...there are quite a few perfomances of her singing it here on youtube. Some are better than others (i.e. Oprah winfrey 2000 and more recently inside the actors studio 2007.)
Diana and Aretha have always had a mutal respect and admiration of each other. They are Detroits two undisputed Divas. Diana has alwasy said good things about Aretha and Aretha of Diana
@mikej0hn75ll The only thing Patti could ever do is oversing Aretha!

When you post here, THAN PLEASE show more respect to Miss Ross!!!
DIANA ROSS IS FOR ME ONE OF THE GREATEST FEMALE SINGERS OF ALL TIME! SHE'S MY QUEEN OF SOUL LIKE TARJA TURUNEN IS MY QUEEN OF GOTHIC METAL!!!

Well i show Diana respect and she my be your Queen of Soul, but Aretha Franklin is truely and the only Queen of Soul. Everybody calls Aretha "The Queen" no Diana. And how is she going be the of Soul when she is a pop singer. That doesn't make sense.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
Diana Ross is a very talented woman. She is truly the greatest female soul singer on our world. She is for me (like I said many times before) "The Queen of Soul". And I will not change my opinion about her!

TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
Aretha does a good job here, BUT she has NOT the Class, Beauty, Talent and great Voice of Miss Diana Ross - "The Queen of Soul", who recorded the orginal version of this f*cking great song!!
SuperstarX 3 years ago
Aretha is far more better singer than Diana was and will ever be. Diana had a good voice but she was never in the same league as Aretha. And Diana has never her life been the Queen of Rat let alone the Queen of Soul. Diana is not a soul singer. She sang pop all her life and she ain't even the Queen oF Pop. And Class Diana doesn't have class if it was for her baby daddy she would even be famous.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
You are complete wrong! Diana is a Soul Singer and FOR ME "The Queen of Soul" (it's okay with me, if she's not for you).
Also Diana Ross looks without makeup X-Times better as Aretha Franklin with makeup!
Diana Ross is a very beautiful and very talented artist. No f*cking doubt! Aretha has only a little bit talent (but really ONLY A LITTLE BIT)!
SuperstarX 3 years ago
Diana ain;t no soul singer she was a poptart singer she never was that Queen of Soul and never will. Diana was not the one to bring soul to it golden days Aretha was. Soul was taken serious until Aretha came along And Aretha is very beautiful especially in her younger years. Aretha was in a class all by her self. Diana was good but she was in Aretha league vocally. Diana was never all that of a singer. Now she was the one with only a little bit of talent.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
TheQueenAretha, what you talk here is mega bull f*ck sh**!!! Diana Ross has much more talent as Aretha Franklin! She is a great singer, a great actress, etc. Diana Ross & The Supremes made soul music popular NOT your personal Queen!! I've just googled for Aretha pics in younger years, she was also not beautiful to that time. Just my opinion!
SuperstarX 3 years ago
No it is you who is taking the bull sh*t. The Supremes were a pop group. They did nothing for soul they just made black pop music popular. But when Aretha hit it big in 1967 Soul was take to it glory. Soul would be what it was without Aretha. And as far as talent Aretha was wayyyyy better singer Diana was limited she could do the thing that Aretha did with her voice.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
I mean She couldn't.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
MOTOWN was the record company, which made soul music popular around the world. The Supremes started in 1964 to make soul music popular, so it was earlier as Aretha's turn. Also because of Diana Ross, I started to listen soul music.
I must say here something; I know the name "Aretha Franklin" since the late 80s. Before that time, I've never heard about her!
SuperstarX 3 years ago
Motown was black pop,rnb company. The Supremes didn't make Soul music their music was very bubble gum pop. I wasn't until Aretha signed with Atlantic Record (which was a real Soul/RnB Record Company that Soul took off. The stuff that Motown put out was watered down to say the least. Diana had no hand in making soul what it was. It was Aretha that took soul to it prime.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
And on top of that Aretha was a song writer and a pianist. Their is very little Diana could do she was in no way more talent than Aretha who got her by far. And Aretha was a very beautiful girl. Just look at some of her old videos. And Diana ain't prettys she need alot of makeup to be pretty. Aretha was very pretty. And
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
TheQueenAretha, to say here that Aretha Franklin, is more beautiful than Diana Ross, that's truly one of the most ridiculous comments, which I've ever read in my life! LMFAO. I know taste for women can be different like taste for music or other things. Aretha Franklin, is everything but not a beautiful sexy woman!!! Also to say here, that Motown Records is (was) not a SoulMusic company, that's also mega bull sh**!!!
SuperstarX 3 years ago

TheQueenAretha, STOP!!! More respect to Miss Ross, please!!!
If, you really believe in that sh**, what you say here, than please go to a good eyes specialist, because there is something wrong with your eyes!!
SuperstarX 3 years ago
You can say all you want but Aretha was a beautiful woman there is nothing wrong with my eye and Diana was not a pretty woman. She looked 40 whne she was 20.
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
Aretha was NEVER a beautiful woman!!! Diana is still today one of the most beautiful darkskinned woman in the world! I love her black eyes a lot! In the 80s Diana looked like a teenager, I've always thought, that Whitney Houston is older as Diana. Btw., how old is Aretha? I would say something between 80 till 90. Is that true?
PS: TheQueenAretha, are you female or male? And are you interested in women?
SuperstarX 3 years ago

I'm NOT thinking that way, BUT I like it when a talented female singer looks also beautiful!!

I can not imagine, that Aretha Franklin WAS the dreamwoman, for only 1 day to only 1 man!
Michael Jackson wanted to look like Diana, now he looks like a Zombie. Something went wrong in his life.

no doubt i love every delicious drop of ross' version of this song, but i dig this too more than aretha's studio version. there's a personal testimony here that makes comparisons, between the two legendary women, mute. aretha's using the song to witness about what only she can tell when she sings it. i dig her little grunts and moans on this. crazy love for miss ree ree and miss ross. so glad i was growing up when these two ladies came on the scene and took over. lucky me.

i like Aretha's version of this song, she brings soul to this verison, Diana brings a compassionate classy style to her version, and Patti brings Power and strenght to her version....

This rendition is in a lower key than Diana's... Did Aretha record it in this key as well?

do anyone have any video about aretha's personal life? an intimate ortrait of her personal life and how other singers talk about her? i'd like to see it
psychotictelepath 4 years ago
Aretha has stated before that Diana's version of this song is what gave her the impetus to cover it. Aretha put her stamp on the song in this version no doubt. But Diana's version was how the composers intended it to sound like...fo sure
konumers 4 years ago
The entire performance at Park West was done under tremendous pressure. Aretha feels that she has to be responsible, even if she is no mood for singing, which she wasn't here. As I posted, Carolyn Franklin, her brother Cecil, her grandmother had all died in quick succession. It took all Aretha could muster to sing ANYTHING during this period.
OliverPenn1 4 years ago
I can't say this is a bad version but somehow , the intimacy seems to vanish. If you like vocal exuberance watch Patti Labelle's version, you can't ask for more. it's just perfect!

caesar6882 4 years ago
Without feeling? Listen to it and not look at the picture and if you say she is singing without feeling. YOU not her must be souless.
The only problem I hear is that she is not portraying the feeling of the song. The song is a more of a truimphant song. Talking about I'm taking back my life. If you just listen to this version it sounds like she is giving in.
Like someone said Aretha was going through a lot of stuff but to say without feelings is SO WRONG
MrStyle23 3 years ago
i dont understand how (or why) people try to compare these 2 completely different artists??? dianas' voice is soooo different you cant compare at all.. aretha has strength yes...diana has that heart felt presence in every song she sings....both have different qualities

Aretha has a wonderful talent to interpret a heartfelt song and deliver it with so much soul and pure emotion. But at the same time, the years have left her voice ravished. Aretha place her signature on this song.

I agree totally with totorreys assessment of Diana Ross' rendition..Patti labelle did it as part of a medley as a tribute to Diana Ross on soul train?
mrstaid 5 years ago
ramiakin and totorrey I agree with you... usually Aretha is a great interpretor of songs and makes them her own. However, in this case, I prefer Ms. Ross' rendition.
islezeus 5 years ago
Aretha was going thru a LOT of death in her immediate family here. It showed in her singing. She was really hurting deep in her heart. At times, she seemed to be fighting back the tears.

Yes, from the "Love All the Hurt Away" album... I remember my dad had that on vinyl, and even though I was only about 9 years old, this song blew me away.
b7160 3 years ago
I don't think Aretha was so hot on this. Re is my personal favorite and ordinarily can sing circles around Miss Ross and anybody else. Not this time. This arrangement was awful, she didn't sing with the melody, which I typically relish in her performances, and her voice was not good that night. I couldn't even listen to this thing in its entirety. Diana's rendition is much, much better: prettier, simpler, and with the melody.
totorrey 5 years ago
ShangoJamal 5 years ago
Either you didn't fully read my comment or you don't know what relish means, because as I stated previously I normally enjoy the fact that Aretha does not sing with the melody, but this time I don't think it worked.
