lol guy said you can cycle with some types of tangs. Just drop a piece of shrimp in there and you don't have to buy a fish that you don't want to keep, like a damsel.
This could work sure, but it's horrible to the fish even though damsels deserve it! It's easier just to chuck something into the tank to start the bacteria cycle, like a piece of raw shrimp or aquarium cycling products (that are basically the same concept just for idiots like me,) and just add the fish after the cycle. Still use cheap fish until your comfortable enough with your system to add more expensive fish.... like yellow tangs to your 10 gallon tanks hehe.....
ok, first of all, never add damsels as ur first fish for 2 reasons. 1 they are hella aggressive and will shred anything that comes in the tank later and 2 is that by using damsels, u are really torturing the poor thing by exposing it to high levels of nitrates. just simply use live sand and rock to cycle the tank THEN add the fishes, that way, the fish have a higher chance of surviving and it could save you some money as well.
this dude is a complete idiot. telling people to cycle there tank with fish is bad enough but telling them to use damsels. you do what he says and watch the problems you have when the damsel has a pop at everything you put in. numb nuts.
Im not an expert, but to start the cycle process with a clown fish, tang(which is highly foolish)or even a damsel is stupid, and ironic. You can easily start the cycle process with live rock or even throw in flake food, and just test the water for trace of ammonia, wait till the ammonia level is low a water change maybe performed. If u start by added a so call starting fish(damsel) you maybe torturing the fish if you have high level of ammonia.
dude went to the guys web site and he had photoshop pictures of reefs in peoples homes. the funny thing is, is that some of the pictures have fish in them that dont move in like 4 of the pictures. people like this give the saltwater community a bad name.
I think if anyone believes (sucessful) saltwater aquariums (even fish only) are not expensive and high maintenance they are in for a big surprise. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying and or trying to make money off of you. That said its a fun and challenging hobby. Good luck. You may need it!
@iwimp1994 i don't think he said to cycle with a tang for starters it just happened that there was a tang in the tank he mostly said damsels and clownfish... correct me if im wrong. And he isent totally stupid for starters everyone has there own way of doing things but it was a bit far fetched on some parts but yah i have to agree don't listen to everything expert village says beacause most of them arent experts at all but they just try to help and notice how i MOST. but i agree dont stress.
@TangPolice I would have to agree.... The best way to do it is read all you can and talk to people that have had great success.... This video is very general and not informative at all....
Also, if you mix water from another tank, if you've ever treated the tank for any disease, the medicine will still be in the water and will obliterate corals and anemones. You want to start fresh for reef aquariums, as 90% of meds are not reef safe.
Mixing cycled water with new tank to help cycling? Ok, but the cycling is also in the live rock, most of it. That will help but not really. Still need 2 weeks MINIMUM to a month preferably for any significant amount of cycling to have been completed with salt water.
Use of damsels isn't a bad idea, but some consider it inhumane.. I personally hope all the little bastards die.
Which is pretty stupid, as tangs are active, bossy, and VERY disease-prone fish. It's a great way to get some ick into a brand new tank.... God I hate tangs. I work at an aquarium store in California, and the fish that always screw up our sales tanks ( in terms of introducing a witch's brew of nasty protozoans and external parasites) are always tangs. Every time. Use a school of medium to large chromis to cycle. They aren't quite as durable as their damsel cousins, but at least they're not evil.
well i wasn't defending or promoting what he said, only that he did say it.
Personally I would rather not spend the money on a fish that is likely to die anyway during initial cycling. I cycle my tanks by using commercial grade ammonia hydroxide. (ammonia in water)
You need an ammonia source right? why not ammonia?
Just be sure it has no dyes, surfectants, fragrance, etc.
Also, shake the bottle, if it gets suds, look elsewhere.
I used 10% ammonia, 1.5 tbsp in a 150g tank = 4ppm
I volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on weekends as a laboratory aquarist and a guide since 2002. We use ammonia hyrdoxide in the holding tanks that don't contain any fish in order to prevent the nitrifying bacteria colonies in the sand filters from crashing. However, in my 13 years of experience with fishkeeping- both fresh and salt- I haven't lost a single fish in the cycling period. I reccomend fish for most of my clients unless it's a huge system; then use some ammonia hydroxide.
Yeah cause that's what I heard Certain Tang Fish, Let alone a ClownFish Not very Smart. But yet again it's the nature of the business. They send you home with fish to cycle then after they die and you bring them back O well lets test your water O you have High Ammonia and Nitrates Sorry no new fish or Refund. They get one weak ones that don't know any better all the time.
i cycled my tank by mixing water needed for tank and i bought a sgt major...if u want a fishless cycle. go with saltwater and liferock...i also a video on my profile w/ my fish eating!
I use the fishless method for Fresh Water tanks. If I ever start a salt water tank there is no way I'm spending money of fish for them to just die. It's a waste. And who would want to put adorable salt water fish in a tank that they know they're gonna die? It's inhumane. I know some people do it without knowing, but that's different.
Please don't listen to these people, if your fish do survive, their life will have been shortened and their immune system damaged. D:
most of the time, the nitrogen cycle goes through so fast, the fish doesn't have time to die. If the fish does die, it's just like the cocktail shrimp method of starting an aquarium. But grow a pair, man up, and put that %$@# fish in that tank and cycle it!!
can anyone explain to me how to start a saltwater fish tank???
i only need a fish only tank...and my tank is a 20 gallon...24" long and 12" wide and 14" high, i would like a predator fish that can be mixed with others, and small enough and suitable for my 20 gal if possible...
well what you want to do is buy some live sand/crushed coral and some live rock. it will be pretty inexpensive for you because it's such a small tank. these will also act as a biological filter.
next get some starter fish. some good starter fish are any type of damsel fish. they are decently aggressive, don't grow very big, and they start up the cycle so you can get other fish.
there are many fish that you could choose from, after you get the cycle going for about a month. just research!!!

This is clearly not the right way to start cycle a fish tank and they should be reported the only accepted method of starting a tank cycle with live fish is by using feeder fish nothing else as they are just collateral, you should certainly not put in a damsel.
