@ljlock2599 Did Reggie ever have 26 sacks in a season? And did he follow up the next season with 24 sacks? No? Deacon Jones fucking did....and he did it when the seasons were only 14 games. Sure....Reggie White was the best ever...sure...right.
@aaaredskin They played in different eras. Players were slower and weaker. In Reggie's time, the game was faster and you couldn't trip, grab facemasks, or hit blockers on the head.
@Rorshein: LT was a LINEBACKER folkz. David Jones was a DEFENSIVE END. LT was awesome, don't get me wrong, but DE is the position "pass rusher" is commonly reserved for DEs, LT did his standing up, HUGE difference.
I misspoke on another post saying Reggie White(Rest Plush)-and ABSOLUTELY NO DISRESPECT TO THE M. O. D- was #1, I recant, #1) David Jones. #2) Reggie White, #3) Bruce Smith, #4) Joe Green, #5) Mark Gastineau
Alpha Males, guys like him, Lawrence Taylor, Ray Lewis, Dick Butkis, Ronnie Lott, Jack Tatum, Reggie White, Lambert, John Lynch etc. Feared but respected. These guys changed the way the game was played & most couldn't play in this era because the NFL got softer to protect the players. Ray Lewis is the last of a dying breed. Sean Taylor could've been if he was still here R.I.P.
@june1683 he's a bitch? Why? Because he played in a different era where the rules are different? Be for real, you really don't consider a man like him a bitch. Maybe you're just intimidated, maybe you're not as tough as some guys, guys like him are respected for being Alpha males.
One of the few defenders in NFL history who could single-handedly wreck an offense. Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor are other examples of this kind of destructive defender.
Deacon Jones deserves to be number one. He had speed, size, strength. But, he also had the intelligence to play football. He understood the psychological side of football. Intimidate, Intimidate.. Then, execute, This was a player who knew how to get attention for his positon. This man put the fear of God on the opposing team before, they came on the field. Now, that is respect. This man wrote the book and then, re-wrote the book as to how to play defensive end. Simply, the best.
Reggie White was an excellent player. Deacon Jones' play gave new meaning to the term "trench warfare." Before Deacon Jones, no one really noticed a lineman. He was someone that ran interference for the linebackers. They got all the glory while the lineman toiled in obscurity. Now, for the first time, a quarterback had to fear someone with speed and technique who was not a linebacker. I watched this man play. From then to now, every lineman must meet or exceed this man. @PorkFrog I totally agree, the NBA and the NFL have been on a parallel path. Both leagues tried to create more scoring by handicapping defenses but it changed how the offenses played and it made teamsusing the rules for easy points. In the NBA, teams pass and fast break less and just run isos and draw questionable "super star" calls cheap foul shots.

this number 1 ranking for deacon is right on. he simply terrorized the nfl for a decade -- no lineman ever wanted to face him, and double teams rarely worked, since that would leave merlin olsen free to crush you from the middle.
almost everything Deacon Jones did is illegal in today's NFL ha. Look at him and what he did and still try to come at me telling me that Harrison is a dirty player...nobody today is as dirty as anyone back then. So people should stop whining about players being dirty nowadays.
@kruunk1 Almost everything he did was illegal? I assume you mean the head slap. Beyond that what did he do that was illegal? How wasn't a dirty player even then because the head slap was legal then. What makes a player dirty is playing outside the rules period.
@andrewr62 alright, let's point them out...The head slap, facemasking, tripping. Dude....they said it in the video "Our No. 1 pass rusher of all time was a bully who never hesitated to use DIRTY tricks".....yeeaaahhh.....you don't feel too smart now , do you?
@kruunk1 By the way, the head slap was NOT illegal when Deacon Jones played. Get it? Understand now?
It was not considered dirty and was common practice in the 1960's. Can you name a single NFL defensive player who has never been caught face masking or being overly aggressive? Fact is Jones was not a heavily flagged player. Bully? No. Feared? You bet. Just the facts. Now consider yourself smarter.
@andrewr62 First off, learn to read before you rant. I said every thing he did is illegal in TODAY'S NFL. Whether it was legal back then isn't relevant to that sentence. Also, being a dirty player doesn't mean just breaking the rules, it could mean breaking a moral code. If we fought, there would be no rules...but there would be a moral code that neither of us bite each other, hit below the belt, or attempt murder...but you could still fight dirty and do that anyway.
@kruunk1 My point is simply Deacon Jones was not known as a dirty player. He was intense, fierce, and a player who stood up for himself. The NFL thought enough of him to name him to the all time nfl team, the best
at his position to ever play the game. Simply to rant and call him a dirty player with no regard to some moral
code is ludicrous. To reach the conclusion he was a dirty player based on 2 minute highlight video is not fair to
@andrewr62 My point is, if he wasn't known as a dirty player, NFL Network wouldn't have said that he was known for being a dirty player in the damn video about him. My point wasn't wether he was considered dirty, my point was that the players labeled dirty today are less dirty than he was, but everyone loves him and hates them.
@andrewr62 Also, The part about being a bully was a quote from the video. The guy who works for NFLN said all of that....that's why it's in quotations!! Read it over again.
@clipobserver You have a good point, I don't know who he could have replaced and his relatively short career was the only highlights for some horrible Bucs teams.....sorry.
@0007Kdawg As a Bucs fan I agree though to be fair he played for a some crappy Bucs teams. If Hugh Culverhouse wasn't a crappy owner and maybe if Selmon played longer probably be on the list though don't know who he would have replaced.
David "Deacon" Jones should have the SACK RECORD 4 one season.Look at 1967 stats and they say there is no way to of kept track back then I have 3 football cards remakes and it says\139 tackles\1 fumble recovery\26 sacks
Compare Deacon to any of the top pass rushers of today and I think you find that he looks unathletic. He did have some great stats, but comparatively, talent-wise, I don't think he is that fantastic from watching these few clips.
@ClintJanzen5 What's your point? Tamba Hali isn't very athletic and he's one of the league's top pass rushers. Are you saying Deacon can't be the greatest because his talent doesn't compare to guys who are playing 3 decades after him.
@BroncosXNumberX1 Not that he cannot play or wouldn't necessarily be good. You are right that looking athletic and being an athlete aren't necessarily the same thing. Hali does have a strange combination that is successful, but he is not the only top pass rusher in the NFL. Furthermore 3 decades later, as you say, NFL lineman are much bigger and stronger than they were previously, without giving up any quickness. What I am saying is I think it is a tougher league to play in now.
its not just lineman, every position out there is bigger and stronger than it was 3 decades ago, no one from that era would have the same impact today no matter how good they were, its just something you dont compare because in general; people (not just football players) are genetically bigger now then 30 years ago.
@EscobaroWhite what makes you think these guys wouldn't do good. if these men where playing in these times they would exposed to all the things(workouts, better nutrition, better medical procedures, equipment, techniques, etc.) that all the athletes receive today. I just don't like that argument because whatever is making players bigger these days would probably have an effect on these guys to. i see where your coming from tho, this is just the way i see it.
I understand where your coming from too, but what i meant was if you took someone like deacon exactly how he was then and put him in the nfl today he would struggle. if deacon was born in this era with all the nutrition, procedures ect. then yeah he would very likely succeed, i was merely speaking from the fantasy side of squaring old players against the new but i would never take anything away from these old players because they were the best of the best at that time.
@EscobaroWhite ya your right, many of the old school guys would get swallowed up in the competition if you put them as they were. I mean even year to year there is always some new freak of nature comin out the college ranks(Suh last year, Newton this year). I dont doubt the mental toughness would be there, but physically they just wouldn't be able to compete. Crazy how much and how quickly it changes.
agreed, i think the intangibles of players back in this era was probably of a better quality too. i mean you had a freak like bobby bell when he came out saying he would of payed to play, they had such a love for the game its ashame you dont see that asmuch now days. who's your team bro? and who you hoping they pick up in the draft?
@EscobaroWhite I dont really got a team, but if i where to pick id have to go with miami. I like their run game. Newton in the wildcat would be interesting but i doubt that will happen. I got a feeling they are gonna pick up mark ingram which is fine because Ricky and Brown are both unrestricted FA's this year. Id like to see them come back but you never know. I dunno a solid QB, RB, OG, or some run stoppers would be nice
I met Deacon in about 1967 (I was 5 then). Needless to say he made quite an impression. He was my favorite player then and still is today. One of the toughest and smartest men ever to play the game.
You know, I don't expect any pass rushers to be apoligetic for doing their job, but this wanting to put as much pain of their opponents sounds way out of line.
I could see myself tackling without any sorrow but I wouldn't wanna hurt the guy either.

players. He was known as a player who never quit and the best pass rusher of all time and possibly
the best defensive end ever to play the game.
andrewr62 7 months ago
@kruunk1 By the way, the head slap was NOT illegal when Deacon Jones played. Get it? Understand now?
It was not considered dirty and was common practice in the 1960's. Can you name a single NFL defensive player who has never been caught face masking or being overly aggressive? Fact is Jones was not a heavily flagged player. Bully? No. Feared? You bet. Just the facts. Now consider yourself smarter.
andrewr62 7 months ago
@andrewr62 First off, learn to read before you rant. I said every thing he did is illegal in TODAY'S NFL. Whether it was legal back then isn't relevant to that sentence. Also, being a dirty player doesn't mean just breaking the rules, it could mean breaking a moral code. If we fought, there would be no rules...but there would be a moral code that neither of us bite each other, hit below the belt, or attempt murder...but you could still fight dirty and do that anyway.
kruunk1 7 months ago
@kruunk1 My point is simply Deacon Jones was not known as a dirty player. He was intense, fierce, and a player who stood up for himself. The NFL thought enough of him to name him to the all time nfl team, the best
at his position to ever play the game. Simply to rant and call him a dirty player with no regard to some moral
code is ludicrous. To reach the conclusion he was a dirty player based on 2 minute highlight video is not fair to
this great player or is reputation.
andrewr62 7 months ago 2
@andrewr62 My point is, if he wasn't known as a dirty player, NFL Network wouldn't have said that he was known for being a dirty player in the damn video about him. My point wasn't wether he was considered dirty, my point was that the players labeled dirty today are less dirty than he was, but everyone loves him and hates them.

@kruunk1 I do suggest the book Head Slap. It gives great insight to to the man as well as great stories
on the NFL in the early 1960's.

@andrewr62 thanks

Jones had the added advantage of playing beside Merlin Olsen, who drew double teams (and sometimes more) on every play.

Good list, but I think they snubbed Leroy Selmon. A DE for TampaBay and a Hall of Fame member

@0007Kdawg As a Bucs fan I agree though to be fair he played for a some crappy Bucs teams. If Hugh Culverhouse wasn't a crappy owner and maybe if Selmon played longer probably be on the list though don't know who he would have replaced.

great player but it's sad to see that as an older man he never evolved beyond football jock.

David "Deacon" Jones should have the SACK RECORD 4 one season.Look at 1967 stats and they say there is no way to of kept track back then I have 3 football cards remakes and it says\139 tackles\1 fumble recovery\26 sacks
1968 110 tackles\22 sacks 1967-1968 46 SACKS

Compare Deacon to any of the top pass rushers of today and I think you find that he looks unathletic. He did have some great stats, but comparatively, talent-wise, I don't think he is that fantastic from watching these few clips.
ClintJanzen5 1 year ago
@ClintJanzen5 What's your point? Tamba Hali isn't very athletic and he's one of the league's top pass rushers. Are you saying Deacon can't be the greatest because his talent doesn't compare to guys who are playing 3 decades after him.
BroncosXNumberX1 1 year ago
@BroncosXNumberX1 Not that he cannot play or wouldn't necessarily be good. You are right that looking athletic and being an athlete aren't necessarily the same thing. Hali does have a strange combination that is successful, but he is not the only top pass rusher in the NFL. Furthermore 3 decades later, as you say, NFL lineman are much bigger and stronger than they were previously, without giving up any quickness. What I am saying is I think it is a tougher league to play in now.
ClintJanzen5 1 year ago
@ClintJanzen5
its not just lineman, every position out there is bigger and stronger than it was 3 decades ago, no one from that era would have the same impact today no matter how good they were, its just something you dont compare because in general; people (not just football players) are genetically bigger now then 30 years ago.
EscobaroWhite 11 months ago
@EscobaroWhite what makes you think these guys wouldn't do good. if these men where playing in these times they would exposed to all the things(workouts, better nutrition, better medical procedures, equipment, techniques, etc.) that all the athletes receive today. I just don't like that argument because whatever is making players bigger these days would probably have an effect on these guys to. i see where your coming from tho, this is just the way i see it.
jiqweba 11 months ago
@jiqweba
EscobaroWhite 11 months ago
@EscobaroWhite ya your right, many of the old school guys would get swallowed up in the competition if you put them as they were. I mean even year to year there is always some new freak of nature comin out the college ranks(Suh last year, Newton this year). I dont doubt the mental toughness would be there, but physically they just wouldn't be able to compete. Crazy how much and how quickly it changes.
jiqweba 11 months ago
@jiqweba
agreed, i think the intangibles of players back in this era was probably of a better quality too. i mean you had a freak like bobby bell when he came out saying he would of payed to play, they had such a love for the game its ashame you dont see that asmuch now days. who's your team bro? and who you hoping they pick up in the draft?
EscobaroWhite 11 months ago

@MIKECNW And that is why you wouldn't make it in the NFL.
