Playing a composition in concert or via broadcast ensures that the composer is paid royalties for the performance/broadcast. How does this work? One of the major organizations is the American Society of Composers, Musicians, and Publishers (ASCAP) by which performances and broadcasts of Barrett's compositions are tracked, and royalties paid to his estate.
It is now obvious that Barrett's solo compositions 1968-70 tower above his contemporaries' work, and may be the single most influential body of musical work to emerge from British rock. Many inaccuracies have been written about Barrett, but a recommended reading is Malcolm Jones' "The Making of The Madcap Laughs". Jones, who produced most of Madcap, and worked directly with Barrett in the recording studio, describes a focused, together Barret, definitely not the Barret former sidemen describe.
It's amazing how Dave and the others have have kept him alive when it would have been so easy to just ignore and move on,,,,,that shows the integrity that Dave and Pink Floyd have,
Barrett's work in the post Floyd years of 1968-70 towers above most, if not all, rock artists of the time, including, it is fair to say, Pink Floyd. Barrett's solo compositions have been cited by many rock stars as deeply influential, and this composition, Terrapin, has been covered by Phish, Smashing Pumpkins. and others. For Dave Gilmore to talk as Syd as a man "with a sparkle in his eye, and a spring in his step", I find condescending. Better to note Syd's huge influence, and lasting impact.
Barrett was no genius, a drug addled casualty who was been transformed into some sort of folk hero legend by hippy media. Had he not burned out his brain on LSD who thinks the Pink Floyd would have gone on to do what they eventually did. There would have been no Atom Heart Mother, Meddle or Wish You Were Here. No Wall. Think about that for a moment.
@p165711 I completely disagree with your statement, Syd's started the bad so if not for him, there would be no pink floyd. In addition, his tragic decline provided the basic inspiration for some of Floyd's best work
@p165711 hes the originator of pink floyd... he coined their name. although they sounded different that "feel" never left. his crazy and spacey deep lyrics was what sold pink floyd in the begining. the wall was nothing short of that. hes the seed that produced the 100 ft tall tree that now is pink floyd. albeit, gilmour was the best thing that ever happened to that band, even he realizes syd's approach to music was genuine. so why all of their tributes? just seems pointless...
Yet, strangely enough, the band itself, as well as the albums Wish You Were Here, DSOTM, and a portion of The Wall's general plot all debt their very existence to Syd's lasting influence, as much as some of their greatest works -e.g. Echoes-, seem lyrically inspired by Barrett's delicate writing style. And ironically, many critics claim that Syd Barrett was possibly the single best writer of psychedelic songs, deeming The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn a great work. Genius? I believe so.
@p165711 ok so you dont like drugs. thats cool man i can respect that. but it gives you no reason to be condescending to others that do, and who can relate to the personal expressions of the culture
apesar das divergencias entre o pink floyd e roger waters terem durado uma boa parte do tempo uma coisa em comum entre eles nunca morreu que foi o amor e consideração pelo amigo SYD!!
I might be wrong, so please correct me if I am. I think Gilmour plays songs written by Barrett - See Emiy Play, Arnold Layne, Terrapin, Astronomy Domine as a nod to Syd, like we see here. Waters, to my knowledge has not ever done that. Also, I read in a Barrett biography that is was Gilmour that always ensured Barrett got paid royalties. The more I read about Gilmour, the more I think he is a class act. Waters - not so much... sad to say...
@bleekblock Interesting. I couldn't find anything on the search engines or any videos in Youtube when I searched "See Emily Play" "Radio Kaos". I am guessing that you saw him play it at one of his concerts?
@bpvogel You are correct. I saw him play it at the Philadelphia Spectrum in August of 1987 on the Radio Kaos tour. It was a month before I saw the Gilmour Floyd across the parking lot at J.F.K. Stadium.
Great gesture and cover by the Gilmour. "Terrapin" is a deceptively difficult song to sing, and Barrett sung it with ease. You can hear/see David straining a bit here, and he is a great vocalist.
It's a difficult song to properly play as well. Syd always did the vocals to pair beautifully with the instrumental melody. Properly combining the two to achieve the original effect is something that I've yet to see anyone but Syd do. But I think it's wonderful that Gilmour and Waters both try anyway and put their hearts into it for Barrett, may he rest in peace.
The radiantly brilliant Floyd! The raw, bewildering, mysterious brilliance of the Syd-era (Piper, Madcap, et al). The screaming, exposed, vulnerable brilliance of the Waters-era, and the subtle, enthralling brilliance of the Gilmour-era + Wright-work. (Sorry Mason :\ lol). There is so much to discover, enjoy and digest in everything Floyd!

I think Syd Barrett was one of the most talented writer,singer,composer,painter...
i love his personality so much- and i can relate to him so much..
and beside all that, i think David Gilmour is truely one of the top guitar players ever- along side with Hendrix and so on...
... its too bad we don't have those kind of exceptional individuals today
may Syd rest in peace, and may Gilmour live on!
