  • OMG on doit la chanter en musique... c'est horrible ><

  • @lol

  • Good article in today's NY Times on the history of this great American opera: wwwDOTnytimesDOTcom/2012/01/22/opinion/sunday/nocera-in-porgy-and-bess-variations-on-an-explosive-theme.html?hp=&pagewanted=all

  • Sounds like something I'd have in my iPod :D

  • tap 2 for ass

  • As a theatre major in High School. This is the first opera I was able to relate to and I fell in love with the Gershwins!

  • My Marching Band preformed this song this year in our show "Panthers 365" which was all of the seasons. It was so fun to play, and such a good classic

  • I love her light coloratura voice

  • If you absolutely love this version check out- Kathleen Battle sings "Summertime" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess- Both make me smile, but for different reasons respectively.

  • so in love with this.

  • what a voice!

  • Always love the beautiful glissando towards the end of this song.

  • gorgeous setting and performance

  • @blkhercules2365 chill out brah

  • Wow. Gracias por subir esto.....

  • this is in b minor. :)

  • I know the original key is aminor, but is she singing this in the key of cminor? Does anyone know.

  • This is absolutely the most beautiful rendition Ive ever heard in my life.

  • THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST HEARTFILLED PROFORMANCES THAT I EVER WITNESSED. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT A PROFORMANCE!

  • HEAVEN?? CRAP ARTIST--BOOM HEAD came around the corner, BOOM MOBILE, Baby harnessed safely in the back seat! He looked "SHOCKED" STUNNED". Harnessed without protection from his BOOM HEAD father. Reverse Start learning. Head Start BOOM BOOM BOOM, Severely Handicapped!

  • Beautiful❤

  • Oh thank you Universe, God, Spirit, for the souls that wrote this music, for the souls that sing this music, for the souls that play this music. *tears*...

  • The Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company is MUCH better. I prefer soft guitar rifts over loud singing.

  • You fucking ruined this with a careless cut of the last note. What were you thinking?

  • This is absolutely the best version of this song I've heard yet. What a voice.

  • "...a shame there are people who can pick on some detail and label it flawed..."

The bigger shame is YouTube's failure to remove these meaningless comments, which most of the time are not constructive or don't enhance the appreciation of the subject video.

They serve only the ignorant cowards who post them.

  • Knowing there can be no consequences for disrupting a shared space of beauty they remain indelible to rape our eyes as we unsuspectingly fall upon their petty if not vulgar words.

    Thanks for caring

  • i saw this in 4th grade....needless to say i didnt like it....but i love this song

  • @6sushi66 cynthia haymon i believe..

  • This is beautiful.

  • a real masterpiece

  • janis joplin is better when she sings the summertime...

  • It is sung operatically, but it is not an opera necessarily. I just wrote a huge paper on Gershwin and he wrote all of Porgy and Bess as a cross over piece between musical theatre and opera. This was an actual goal of his.

  • @Marrymedavidgilmour Well, Gershwin wanted to write an opera, and even though the first performance was not on opera stage, it still featured classically trained singers. It was performed in top opera theaters in the world. It is an opera. I don't know what you wrote in your paper, but google for article by John Ardroin, the critic for PBS Great Performances called "The great 'Porgy' debate". Also, musical theater in 1935 was different from today as performances weren't miked.

  • @jewelmarkess Precisely. The show has too many qualities that an opera has to not be considered one. Not to mention, you can find it on "best of opera" lists.

Anyhow... I love this show. Listening to it at the moment, actually. :)

  • @jewelmarkess Oh ya totally. It was and is still performed in great opera halls and sung classically, but from what I understand and what I read in all the books I read for that ridiculous project, Gershwin wanted a cross over piece for P&B. During the time period, operettas were popular (from in the late 18th century and into the early 20th Century). So definitely opera had a huge influence on musical theatre, but it's still a subject that isn't necessarily resolved :P

  • I can play that song on my piano

  • @TayMileyFan woa you must be close to mozart

  • @TOYTOPETAO

? I can play the short version, very good, I think.^^

    The completely not.^^

  • Not as good as Price.

  • Are you dumb??! Porgy and Bess is an OPERA!!!!! This is how it was originally sung. I personally prefer Anne Browns version, as she was the original Bess. LOL @ smckellop

  • Are you dumb??!! Porgy and Bess is an OPERA!!! It's not remixing anything!! This is how the original version sounds, I personally think I prefer Anne Browns, as she was the original Bess .lol @ smckellop!!

  • Gershwin wrote Porgy and Bess as an Opera. The song 'Summertime' is originally opera. The jazz musicians have taken creative license to the original song. Not Gershwin.

  • Beautiful voice. But there is no need to remix the original lullaby into an 'opera' style gimmick. I don't care what artistic license you might have....that was just stupid.

  • @daarkmatter Porgy and Bess is an opera. what the hell are you talking about?

  • @daarkmatter are you high?

  • Where do i find the whole film? I mean, if there is any...

  • this version is so much better than the 1959 one...especially Sportin' Life.

  • @Risala60 Which version is this?

  • If my mama would sing me that for a lullaby, I would be the happiest infant alive.

  • @mikanbobby7 I used to sing this beautiful song to my son when he was a baby, of course, my voice is not this great! :)

  • @mikanbobby7

    No kidding!

  • @mikanbobby7 My grandma and my momma both sang it to me. It was pretty great.

  • sta man ta pasaaaa!!!

  • @patrontequila1234 So do I lol we must have the same class (Trends in Modern American Music) I am trying to finish up my paper now (an hour before the class) LOL

  • I have to compare this version and the R.E.M version for class. Can some one please help me?

  • that baby is going deaf

  • El Verano puede dura

  • WOW!PLEASE DOES ANYONE KNOW HER NAME,i JUST LOVE THIS SONG HEARD A LOT SINGING IT BUT SHES MY FAVORITE.SHE SURE CAN REACH THOSE HIGH NOTES WITHOUT SCREAMING.

  • Comment removed

  • @peteandpare A cantora deve ser Harolyn Blackwell.Maravilhosa!

  • Her last note is definitely a B. The one just before double high C...

  • what note is the high note at the end?

  • @JessicarrRawr Bess' last vocal note seems to be close to a B4 natural (about 494Hz).

  • :') <3

  • absolutely breathe taking. My father sang parts of this when I was a child but with grace I defer to this angelic muse.

  • Summertime is a soprano's paradise.

  • So beautifully touching, brought a tear to my eye. Very moving.

  • I had no idea Sublime was influenced by this in their "Summertime" song.

  • I would sell my soul, a kidney, and maybe a couple limbs just to sound half as good as she does xD

In any case she sounds exquisite, and her voice is inspiring. Makes me wanna take this woman by the hand and have her sing to in front of the so called singers that are popular nowadays... :))

  • Probably Diahann Carroll.

  • I LOOVE THIS!!!!!!!!

  • I did NOT expect it to sound that good :O Bravo!

  • When she opened her mouth and sang....I dropped mine and gasped

    Her voice is so beautiful

  • May Puff Daddy never make a rap version!

  • @Floxflow

    AMEN!

  • Incredible. Everything Gershwin could have wanted when he wrote this on Folly Beach when staying in Charleston SC.

  • This is so wonderful! She has the voice of an angel!

  • Beautifullllllllll

  • oh. my. god. who is this woman singing? what a lovely voice! is this performance on dvd? i have no words -- other than she NAILED the emotions that i'm sure gershwin was trying for! EXCELLENT!!!!

  • @susiebfree probably Diahann Carroll

  • love!

  • i just want this movie version of Porgy and Bess Sooooooo BAD!!! she's phenomenal!

  • What a beautiful voice... what a soulful, beautiful melody...

  • Beautiful

  • To the ONE guy who dislikes this: you are a damned philistine.

  • @MrCrawford8 lol that made me laugh instantly

  • @MrCrawford8

That's TWO guys now. I love Gershwin and I love Porgy and Bess, but the lip syncing here positively sucks.

  • @MrCrawford8 Lol yeah not everyone is into 20th century music, and YOU are in fact a philistine. Goofy twit.
