Gorbachev was socialist. He's recently written an article in The Guardian. He just saw the leadership before him for the sham that it was. He did a lot to help democracy there.
@joejjohnston And got little thanks for it. No wonder Putin dons black clothing and tries to look and act sinister all the time. Russians equate dictatorship with prosperity and national strength and democracy with economic collapse and national humiliation.
citing capitalist reformers as for human life and freedom is a bit rich. The purpose of their capitalist reform was to recover from the disastrous socialist economy. Their ideology was economic theory not humanitarianism, as evidenced by their unwillingness to admit, let alone politick, the social shortcomings of unfettered capitalism. They were as blind as lenin and mao to their economic dogma; lucky for them capitalism killed fewer people than its predecessor.
Thatcher feared, that there would be another major power in Europe . She gave a crap about the freedom of other people. She was one of those filthy opportunists of the time.
I find it amusingly ironic that Reagan used the term 'ashheap of history' which sounds a great deal like "dustbin of history" which was first used by Leon Trotsky
does this documentary talks about 1989 revolutions in europe?

Thatcher argued against the reunification of Berlin. She sounds more like a fighter for the status quo of the time.
