A rare glimpse into the mind of a genius who is playing the movement in a different state of consciousness. Kempff would have been on the guest list at my dinner party along with Cobain, Jung, Munch and Kermit. Alas, it looks like it's just me and Kermit.....
This is a beautiful movement of this sonata. It is so calming. Almost as an old soul...But yet the 3rd movement is so young and bright and somewhat violent...please check out my interpretation. I am 15 years old. Much appreciation.
i know that if the performance isnt at least 5 and a half minutes long, they played it wrong. haha its ment to be slow, some people ive heard play it so fast and i dont know why! it sounds so pretty when played slow like this! way to go (again) piano man!
im playing this piece for my recital<3 so close to perfecting it, love this song so much! this guy plays it beautifully(: love it! ill never get tired of it! bravo piano man!
I have only just started playing piano in the last 3 weeks at the age of 30. This has always been a song that was stuck in my head. So i went out and bought a new piano (Kohler and Campbell upright). Whilst learning how to read music and the note positions i am learning to play this.
This is one of the most mesmerizing pieces of music i have heard.
i think the reason people listen to classical b4 onset of insanity is because within some compositions the relation to mental/physical turmoil is so strong that manifestation of the line between sanity and insanity occurs and the pathophysiology of this manifestation compounds the inner turmoil untill it collapses on itself therefore rendering insanity. btw still sane and this rendition of mvt 3 is the best ive ever heard
I don't really listen to this type of music, but I absolutely love this, have never heard anything like it. I just wanted to know, to the people who do listen to this type of music, is this the best version?? is there any better version? if so please link, id love to listen to it :)
@hustla8907 It doesn't exists the ''best version''. There are ''more beautiful'' or ''less beautiful'' executions, ''more or less rich'', as you like. You can try to listen to Kempf's teacher Edwin Fischer or Andras Schiff or Claudio Arrau or some great russian pianis, for a slightly different approach, just as Gilels, Ashkenazy, Richter. Enjoy!
Kempf plays it so well, with the dotted-eigth-note figures played like written (not like most who play it as a triplet). However, have you all hear the only wrong note that he plays? It's at 2:56 . Halfway through measure 38, he plays the D-sharp as a D-natural ! That's not supposed to be played as a D-natural until the next measure. Oh, well.....
lol i listen to rap,but i guess i just undertand the importance and emotinal connection that can only be triggered by certain instruments or compositions that aren't very popular today
to gerald 133 - in my opinion you are right with your findings. But think, the moonlight is calm and steady. This is his interpretation - there are others mor "dynamic" are the better? Kempff was one of the best! Otto Klemperer was asked why he still had the notes in front of him conduction the 9th. His answer was: "In know many conductors perform that concert from their memory - but do they know it from their soul (or heart). This might have been Kempff's answer as well.
Although he is a great pianist indeed, I dare to say, that he failed with dynamics. He playes the whole song with piano pianissimo, wich just makes this pice boring. While if played with proper dynamics, it makes it such an exciting song! It's just my opinion.
Spell Wilhelm Kempff backwards and you get Ludwig Van Beethoven....Coincidence? I think if Beethoven lived through his death this is what he'd look like today....Think about it...
This song reminds me of a simpler time. But now my life is in such a strange and hard state. this song helps me remember a easy and happier chapter in my life, but yet makes me miss them and wish it was so simple ones again.
I got easily touched by small things that shows our humanity as species. You can see a little cut (at 2:06), maybe done while he was shaving. Such a great person yet had so much in common with me. It's like when I see someone else eating. I can't convey the feeling, I just feel like I reach the singularity of us all.
So, I got this older record player from my great grandpa along with his (but mainly my great grandma's) record collection full of polkas, jazz combos and such. well i pulled out a record of some of Beethoven's pieces on it. but as soon as moonlight sonata came on, the whole house got really quite. it still amazes me to this day how such a beautiful song that is so old can take a house full of lively people who would never listen to this on their own time and make them stop and think
@mikaelangel76 If there were no shots of the piano and you only saw the cuts of his face, you'd think we was tripping on mushrooms or something. Every time he looks down he's interested cause he's flying so high in the air!
It's as if Ludwig himself is playing this piece through this man, and only he could play it better. You can see the tranquility and emotion through Welhelm. Wow!!
@tphife2008@2thebeatiful gtfoyoutube with your intelligent comments and decent discussions! For headphones, I would suggest spoiling yourself and investing in Bose, its a good brand but expensive. The sound is simply exquisite. As for computer... well, I don't believe most laptops to have a good soundcard, you may be better off customizing a desktop with one. If you have someone who could build a desktop, you could possibly get a good one for between 500-1000USD. (Depending on parts)
Deep. Beautifully played. Im moved. Im hearing this for the first time with my cochlear implant and wearing headphones. Every note needs to go directly into the ear. Never thought it would sound this clear. Im liking my cochlear so far. Love the deep sound of the grand piano. I need one of those. Or maybe an electric one since I need head phones to hook up. I'd like to get back into plalying this song again soon....sigh.
@2thebeatiful Get you a really good pair of headphones. And if you can, get a nice computer with enhanced audio features. Everything is making LOTS more sense to me now.
@tphife2008 yea, I think I have a good set of headphones. It has a boost button on it. My laptop is old. I do need a new one. What computer do you have? Or, do you have any suggestions on which brand is good?
Wilhelm Walter Friedrich Kempff (25 November 1895 – 23 May 1991) was a German pianist and composer. Although his repertory included Bach, Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms, Kempff was particularly well known for his interpretations of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, both of whose complete sonatas he also recorded.[1] He is considered to have been one of the great pianists of the 20th century.
Is something wrong with me? How is it possible to LOVE this music (Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Verdi, Yanni, Pavarotti, etc.), and at the same time (in the same day, during the morning fitness), to listen to Manowar, Maiden, Judas, AC:DC, Rammstein, etc.?!?
As far as I know, I don't have Multiple Personality Disorder. But somehow, listening to Beethoven and Manowar in the same day doesn't feel right.
Watch him - Kempff seems to have a vision of the pure Platonic form of Beethoven's composition - as his fingers translate his vision into sound - and we watching as well as listening seem to glimpse his vision as some kind of cosmic narrative
When I first saw a video with him the expression of his face impressed me. I've never even imagined, a musician's face may show such great deepness of the musician himself. In short, I may say that I see a highly-spirited person in him as well as his music gives me much to think about.
@jackmsurfer I know , I was like dude, come on, but if you play this for real, it's easy to get sleepy, it's just that wonderful and flows so simply, but slow as hell.
I just keep thinking of the zombies outside (Resident Evil).
I generally listen to rap music. My favorite artist is Kanye West. Artist are getting better with there work, but no matter how great the become, none of there music will ever compare to that of Beethovan. @Max2theWell what a coincidence, the silence after kanye's music is what i like the best too :), it's second only the silence after he stops talking about how great he is
Is there something wrong with the sound of this video? I have the volume turned up on my computer and the left hand/bass is barely audible. I know it's supposed to be pianissimo but . . .
Who can say anything when it comes to this famous man and his music. Beyond words... beautiful, no adjectives can describe its beauty. Wilhelm is in a class all by himself.
i used to play like this when i first finished all the chords well i used to think this version was better... now i see wilhelm kempff playing like i do ...my piano teacher can suck his dick
does he have an album perhaps a concert recording?

He either has the smallest eyes in the world, or the biggest head in the world. :D
But one thing is sure, he is a piano master!

Seriously... How can anyone dislike it? This is an amazing and beautiful composition.
Write by one of the greatest musicians of all times. This song can make a frozen heart person feel the deepest feeling hide in his/her soul.
I must say, for you that dislike it. You have no sense of music and/or good quality judgment.

Prefer it a little slower with the low C# more accentuated at the end of the movement (4:47 - 5:16). But a beautiful piece of music nonetheless.

Is there something wrong with the sound of this video? I have the volume turned up on my computer and the left hand/bass is barely audible. I know it's supposed to be pianissimo but . . .
kerrgal 1 month ago
@kerrgal dont worry its the video you just have to turn up the volume a bit

Who can say anything when it comes to this famous man and his music. Beyond words... beautiful, no adjectives can describe its beauty. Wilhelm is in a class all by himself.
