Two really tough slugger who took no quarter and gave none either. Boy, do I miss old time hockey! They had to mellow it out to pander to all those corperate hoo-haws and in turn made hockey less exciting...they're paying for it now as attendence is down almost everywhere in the League.
Close decision but Jonathan won. Love how Wensink & O'Reilly are pounding the boards in approval. Dupont never seemed the same after this fight. A year or 2 later Jonathan & Dupont went at it again & Dupont wanted no part of him. Brdgman stepped in & Jonathan beat him too.
Another good job by Jonathan against a tough customer. the amazing thing about Jonathan is how he can throw effectively with both hands. not many guys can do that.
just watched a show about the 74-74 Flyers good show all in all. But being actually FROM Boston. I thought it strange how they left out all the battles they had with the Bruins. I’m not anti- Flyer, just sayin!
Worse beating I ever saw Dupont get. The son of a bitch never seemed to lose any fight until that day in 1977. Jonathan laid a beating on Dupont like Joe Frazier laid a beating on Muhammed Ali for his first ever loss in 1971.
@47tooter Jay was tough as nails, but Jonathan is the toughest pound for pound NHL player ever, and only Geore McPhee is in his league. Danny Gare was tough pound for pound as well.
Keep the helmets on, I would rather get punched in the face 50 times and skate away rather than cracking the back of my head on the ice and rolling away on a stretcher and never play again.
I was at this game. Jonathan kicking this a-hole's ass was truly a thing of beauty. Context is key here. You have to understand, we Bruins fans had been watching Dupont hitting guys after the whistle, dealing out cheap shots but he'd never actually fight anyone. So when the young Jonathan took him on, the Garden crowd rose as one in hopes Stan would deliver Dupont a message on our behalf. He did. And Dupont was never the same afterwards. Ding-dong, Dupont was dead!
All Hab fans owe a debt of gratitude to Stan Jonathan for the Too Many Men on the Ice penalty that cost the Bruins a trip to the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals. The Habs went on to win the Cup against the Rangers.
Leave poor Stan alone....today he's only 55 but looks 80 and weighs about 300 lbs. Bouchard still looks the same today as when he played,
@midaszone yes he looks the same but must eat prechewed food and oatmeal and have people read bus signs for him, and Stan Jonathan was at the B's Leaf's game the other nite and looked great, could you possibly have been looking at a picture of your mom?
@brutisgray03 how? jonathan was unbelievable and could fight out of his weight class similar to rypien, thornton is good middle-heavy weight that is not fast and usually loses when he fight up a weight class
what are you talkin about thornton can take on anyone ive never seen him actually lose a fight ever he can kick the shit out of the whole league if he wanted to but stan jonathon is easily the toughest fighter that ever cam to the nhl in any time period
@mooseman1231 yeah i take that back about thornton, but trust he has lost a handful of fights, just this year he lost a handful, he lost to shelley, got dropped by rupp, lost to gillies, lost to carkner, he is a great fighter but jonathan is smaller and a little better pound for pound, he would go toe to toe with guys that tower over him, thornton can handle himself with the best but in my opinion jonathan was better
If our Little Pitbull Stan Jonathan owned Andre Du Pont, imagine what Chara could've done with the so-called "Moose" is he was playing with The Big Bad Bruins back in the 70's!
I'm a die hard Bruins fan who would have loved to see the Kat Smith crack her head open before she sang "God Bless America" before the 6th game of the 1974 playoffs. That being said,, Moose Dupont was one of the guys in the NHL that even alot of the tough guys didn't want to fight. Can't take nothing away from him. But this fight, Johnathan kicked Ass!!!
geeze. what happened there. where were all the flyers to jump johnathan as he was beating on "moose" dupont. loved watching flyers get beaten up live on tv and love it more now. montreal with larry robinson beating on schultz 3 seperate times put an end to the flyer way of hockey.
Can't stand Dupont, but I give him credit for being willing to stand in and trade with Stan, given that Moose wasn't in Jonathan's league when it came to the rough stuff.
@flowerdrop1 I don't know. There's been a few guys who rarely if ever won a fight: Richard Zemlack, Jay Caufield, Kieth Magnusson, Craig Coxe (in Coxes defense he ALWAYS had exicitng fights and was never boring. He might have lost a lot but he stood and threw like a true warrior. He was a far better fighter than his record shows....and he does have a KO over Joey Kocur. I'd rather pay to see Coxe lose a fight than see Torrie Robertson win one......lol)
Stan was a beast not very tall but had heart. He had great balnce and could throw with both hands at will. Reminds of a PJ Stock, can throw with both hands and great balance.
Though I never rooted for the Bruins, I always had much respect for guys like Stan (The Man) Jonathan and even Terry O'Reilly. Why? Because no matter what, they always played their hearts out and you knew they would back you up no matter who was on the ice against you!
Good, even punching at the start and middle of the fight until Jonathan gives some good shots at the end, scoring the EDGE over Dupont(who isn't well known name to me).
@MrJuha82 You don't know who Moose Dupont is? You comment on almost every hockey fight, & you don't know Moose? I'd equate him to John Wensink, but since you don't know who HE is, then that probably wont help! He fought Jim Shoenfeld, Bob Nystrom, Terry O'Reilly, Bobby Orr, Clark Gillies, Wayne Cashman, Wilf Paiement, Tiger Williams, Lanny McDonald, Dave Schultz, Ron Zanussi, Jack Carlson. Gary Howatt, Chris Nilan, Wensink, along with many others. If you were tough, Moose fought you!
@Joinoh I didn't see him hiding behind anyone when he dropped the gloves with Jonathan, O'Reilly, Gillies, Paiement, Tiger Williams, Wensink, Howatt, Cashman, Nystrom, Carlson, Schultz or Wensink....

jonathan was probably the best answer in the nhl to the broad street bullies intimidation tactic, its amazing that even at jonathan's size, he wouldnt back down from anyone and he usually won.

I don't know too many hockey fighters who effectively ended a guy's career from a fight like Jonathan did to Pierre Bouchard.

always nice to see a Broad Street Bully get his ass kicked. thanks for posting. wish there was one where Bobbie Chicken Shit Clark got his ass kicked.. too bad.
@brownfightfanatic LMO 75% of the fights? Take off the rose colored glasses, asswipe! The Bruins have always owned the Flyers in fights...whether it's Jonathan beating up EVERYONE on their team, or Terry kicking Schultz's ass! Brown won maybe 3 of 6 tilts with Miller, but Byers destroyed Berube, as did Miller. Wensink beat Wilson, and Jonathan beat all Flyers.
Gee thats funny?? How come Bob-the-nob-Clark didn't jump in to save Dupont's ass? Oh yea I forgot, once a fight starts he runs and hides behind one of his many bitches.
man these guys were tough. for anyone debating who won and what not. you cant win every fight. everyone loses fights. maybe some more then others, but any guy who makes a living like this i take my hat off too. not an easy thing to do. man were guys tough back then
i will say one thing as a Flyers fan all my life. I loved when the Flyers and the Bruins played. Bruins were tough they werent tougher . Stan won this fight and I remember it like yesterday . moose had aBlack eye. Flyers won just as many of the fights if not more. But if you dont respect the Bruins or the Islanders of those days your a fool. Gillies was great as well with the Isles But Ny fans never talk about the 1st fight he had with Shultz. They were 1-1 lifetime. But those 3 teams were great
@intoodeep941 Enjoyed watching Chicago win their first Cup since 1961. Of course, they played the ideal team to get that done. Cryers are 0-6 in the Finals since the mid 70's. Dupont? Eh, ee was a beeg fagott (as a Quebecois might say)
@BostonGarden your bruins still blew a 3-0 lead and are now on the ass end of a historic moment. HA! go ahead and say the 'hawks won, we still won the east and made history against the B's. EAT SHIT! Bruins haven't even been in the finals since 1990. Haven't won a cup since '72. Longer drought then the Flyers, not by much but you absolutely have NO room to talk. Your team blew a 3-0 series lead and a 3-0 game 7 lead. Your team hasn't been in the finals since 1990 and no cups since '72
@intoodeep941 You're another asshole Flyer fan. Your team is a joke. You are nowhere near a Cup with that goaltending. Besides, the Flyer have a reputation as cheap shot artists. GO FUCK YOURSELF.
@BostonGarden lol that's all you can say. bobrovsky is a contender for the calder trophy and boosh has been playin great. check the current standings too while you're at it you dumb fuck. flyers have been battling for the top spot in the entire league. you're a fuckin idiot dude.
In fact, just how many Flyers' sorry asses did Jonathan wallop in his career? Let's see ... there's Wilson, Dupont, Lapointe, Bridgman, Kelly, Holmgren (in a preseason game in Providence), Schultz (former Flyer by then) ... wait a sec, I DON'T HAVE ALL GODDAMN NIGHT! Let me start over --- how many Flyers DIDN'T get their asses kicked by Stan Jonathan in his storied career?
NOT ONE that had the balls to drop the gloves with him!! Deal with it, dude!!
Except for Clark Gilles and maybe Shultz Stan Jonathan could beat the living piss out of any hockey player even Donald Brashear would get his teeth smashed out if he tryed to throw a few at Jonathon
Kcat --- he did? By your wacky standards, I guess Bouchard, Dupont, Schultz, Lorimer, Nilan, Hangsleben, Clackson, Hilworth, Bridgman, and half the NHL 'whored' Jonathan, too.
Better watch that fight again when your sober. And check out my comments on the fight, too.
are you some Boston Irish drunk from "Southie"...Wilson smacked the dog piss out of Stanley, i watch that fight a 100 times, Jonathan had a stupid grin on his face after the bout becase he knew he got punked....
Kcat -- you're actually partially right for once -- but then, even a broken clock is right twice a day. I am from Southie, the Lower End End to be exact but also lived up the Heights and the Point. And I am 100% Irish, which is why I'm at least 200% smarter than you. A drunk? That's where you're wrong again.
Now break out the Endust and wipe the filth off your computer and you'll see that Jonathan tied up Wilson's uppercut, slipped punches and smacked Big Behn silly with some wicked lefts!
Jonathan was a tough middleweight but he was out of his weight class with Gillies, Schultz[with the Kings and Wilson here..Wilson had too much leverage and rangyness for the small guy..Jonathan landed a few lefts but they didnt affect Wilson in fact i see Jonathans knees buckel at one point, so common dude stop being a beantown homer..Jonathan was a great middleweight like a Stanley Ketchel but could never be heavyweight champ like a Jack Johnson..
spadesjim I agree ! But I have to give credit to Andre Dupont ! Dropping the gloves againts Stan showed a lot of guts and most important Andre stayed in there with the one the NHL's best enforcer in it's long history "" Stan Jonathan ""
Its pretty funny how people say the flyers HATED playing the bruins... they seemed to like enough to beat them in finals... Granted this fight came a few years later but at the end of the day... would you rather win fights or cups?
Is that why you chose to get the tatoo of Vern Shroyer, a.k.a. mini-me, on your dick?
Poor little Booster is upset because he can fuck a cheerio without breaking it! LMFAO
Can't wait to read your Christmas posts Booster! After you order your Cream of Sum Yung Guy from China Wok, are you gonna drink egg nog and post on youtube? LMFAO So sad!
On your channel? What channel is that? The Arizona Sex Offender Registry? Sorry Booster! It's not part of my Verizon Fios package...but you can always post the clip on youtube for the rest of us! LMFAO
Ha Ha Ha....Look at Dupont screaming at the referees to save him.....this is what happens when you tangle with a pit bull.....just ask Bouchard from the montreal canadians....stupid flyers...some broad street bullies....they could never bully the big bad Bruins as we see here in this clip.....GO BRUINS GO!
moose got his butt kicked. broad street pussy. the one and only bullie for the flyers was Dave " The Hammer " Shultz. Stan Johnathan...." Native Pride forever!!!!! "
OReilly,Jonathan,Shultz and Gillies were the toughest. In fact the only time i can remember ever Jonathan,O'Reilly and Shultz lost a battle was against Clark Gillies. But they have won before against Gillies.
Look at O'reilly and Wensink smiling and banging their hands on the boards. Btw Cherry would throw that line of O'reilly centering wensink and jonathan on a regular basis. Lol....medic!!
I love the B's. But that is absurd. O'Reilly never lined up at center. And he never centered Wensink and Jonathan. He was on the same line with Wensink or Jonathan at times.
The problem wouldnt be with OReilly lining up at center..the problem would be that both Wensink and Jonathan played left wing, and were never on the same line. Of course Terry played with both because he played right wing!
Dupont was a punk.I remeber him with The Rangers his first game he japped some guy beat him on the way down then threw the knee. Nobody that in the 50 60 and early 70s.Then against the rangers he tried getting at Ron HArris then realized this was the guy who checked Bill Masterson that infamous day.Dupont came to his senses and feebly tried to get at Ron HArris who I think was on steroids then.
Grew up a Ranger fan, hated Boston almost as much as Philly but it was sad to say it was an end of an era watching Dupont get a good licking and NOBODY,NOBODY stepped up or stepped in.Boston tried duplicating the Philly team but were not winners.I think The Islanders showed everyone how to do it. Gillies was an animal and Nystrom was not human.Evidence when Nystrom whipped Wensick at The Boston Garden and went from stunned silence to Boos .Oreilly is still one of my favs even with no Stanley CP
Boston played tough for more than 40 years before the Flyers even came into existence. They certainly didn't duplicate the Flyers and their tough guys were better players in most cases than the Flyer heavies.
Are you on crack? Did Nystrom beat Wensink? Sure, no doubt about it. It is one of the very few losses of Wensink's career, but EVERYONE loses! Hell, O'Reilly embarrassed Gillies more than once, and lost to him as well. One fight does not make a guy tougher!
And as far as Gillies goes, I think 6 30 goal seasons spoke a lot more of his game than his fighting. He only had 10 fights in a season 1 time, and only 71 fights in his career! O'Reilly had almost triple that, with 198 in the same era!
Here, here! Search youtube for Dave Schultz fights and EVERY time Schultz's clock was getting cleaned either "Douche" Dupont or "Big Turd" Saleski would jump in. The beating S**t-hammer Schultz took from the great Larry Robinson is a perfect example.
Screw Bobby Clarke and the Flyers, they ruined Hockey's Golden Era with their bully bulls**t tactics. I'm glad Clarke as GM later traded for Eric Lindros and got zero cups in the long run.
Gary Dornhoefer said on a Flyers broadcast that Moose Dupont ended up with a black eye from this fight that lasted nearly a month. Moose wasn't the best fighter of the Broad Street Bullies.
apparently you never listened to a Sabres game! lol.....Derek Sanderson was a homer.....but Cusick was actually halfway normal. Jonathan didn't win this nearly as clearly as they made it sound in the 1970's...but I'd call it a narrow win for the last uppercut and call it 7 to 4 on points.Jonathan landed the last 4 punches of the fight.
The Moose's Waterloo...Stan hit him some beauts, especially a late uppercut.
Dupont beaten and no steam left . The look on his face , after the bout , says
it all...

DuPont was only good when he jumped in as the third man to save the hide of another Flyer who was getting beat.

man these guys were tough. for anyone debating who won and what not. you cant win every fight. everyone loses fights. maybe some more then others, but any guy who makes a living like this i take my hat off too. not an easy thing to do. man were guys tough back then

Stan Jonathan, a face carved out of granite!
With fists to match, a lot of fighters seem to favour punching with one hand. Stan could hit as hard with both left and right.

Moose gave the finger to the B's bench Anyone catch that? Stanley one that one!

i will say one thing as a Flyers fan all my life.

Every time I watch Tie Domi fights now, I think of Stan Jonathan.

Moose put an ice pack and a paper bag over his head after taking this beating. Always a pleasure to see Flyers getting beat up.

@BostonGarden it was a pleasure watching the bruins blow a 3-0 series lead. GO FLYERS! BRUINS SUCK
intoodeep941 1 year ago
@intoodeep941 Enjoyed watching Chicago win their first Cup since 1961. Of course, they played the ideal team to get that done. Cryers are 0-6 in the Finals since the mid 70's. Dupont? Eh, ee was a beeg fagott (as a Quebecois might say)
BostonGarden 1 year ago
@BostonGarden your bruins still blew a 3-0 lead and are now on the ass end of a historic moment. HA! go ahead and say the 'hawks won, we still won the east and made history against the B's. EAT SHIT! Bruins haven't even been in the finals since 1990. Haven't won a cup since '72. Longer drought then the Flyers, not by much but you absolutely have NO room to talk. Your team blew a 3-0 series lead and a 3-0 game 7 lead. Your team hasn't been in the finals since 1990 and no cups since '72
intoodeep941 1 year ago
@intoodeep941 You're another asshole Flyer fan. Your team is a joke. You are nowhere near a Cup with that goaltending. Besides, the Flyer have a reputation as cheap shot artists. GO FUCK YOURSELF.
BostonGarden 1 year ago
@BostonGarden lol that's all you can say. bobrovsky is a contender for the calder trophy and boosh has been playin great. check the current standings too while you're at it you dumb fuck. flyers have been battling for the top spot in the entire league. you're a fuckin idiot dude.

Jonathan with the decision. Dupont's punches were awkward in this tilt.

Deal with it, dude!!
dempsey00 2 years ago 3
Except for Clark Gilles and maybe Shultz Stan Jonathan could beat the living piss out of any hockey player even Donald Brashear would get his teeth smashed out if he tryed to throw a few at Jonathon

Behn Wilson whored Jonathan in a bout
kcatleticos 2 years ago
Kcat --- he did? By your wacky standards, I guess Bouchard, Dupont, Schultz, Lorimer, Nilan, Hangsleben, Clackson, Hilworth, Bridgman, and half the NHL 'whored' Jonathan, too.
Better watch that fight again when your sober. And check out my comments on the fight, too.
dempsey00 2 years ago
are you some Boston Irish drunk from "Southie"...Wilson smacked the dog piss out of Stanley, i watch that fight a 100 times, Jonathan had a stupid grin on his face after the bout becase he knew he got punked....
kcatleticos 2 years ago
Kcat -- you're actually partially right for once -- but then, even a broken clock is right twice a day. I am from Southie, the Lower End End to be exact but also lived up the Heights and the Point. And I am 100% Irish, which is why I'm at least 200% smarter than you. A drunk? That's where you're wrong again.
Now break out the Endust and wipe the filth off your computer and you'll see that Jonathan tied up Wilson's uppercut, slipped punches and smacked Big Behn silly with some wicked lefts!
dempsey00 2 years ago
Jonathan was a tough middleweight but he was out of his weight class with Gillies, Schultz[with the Kings and Wilson here..Wilson had too much leverage and rangyness for the small guy..Jonathan landed a few lefts but they didnt affect Wilson in fact i see Jonathans knees buckel at one point, so common dude stop being a beantown homer..Jonathan was a great middleweight like a Stanley Ketchel but could never be heavyweight champ like a Jack Johnson..

Its pretty funny how people say the flyers HATED playing the bruins... they seemed to like enough to beat them in finals... Granted this fight came a few years later but at the end of the day... would you rather win fights or cups?

OReilly,Jonathan,Shultz and Gillies were the toughest. In fact the only time i can remember ever Jonathan,O'Reilly and Shultz lost a battle was against Clark Gillies. But they have won before against Gillies.
NeedJustJesus 3 years ago
Look at O'reilly and Wensink smiling and banging their hands on the boards. Btw Cherry would throw that line of O'reilly centering wensink and jonathan on a regular basis. Lol....medic!!
Kainnmaul 3 years ago
I love the B's. But that is absurd. O'Reilly never lined up at center. And he never centered Wensink and Jonathan. He was on the same line with Wensink or Jonathan at times.
cjlang1213 3 years ago
The problem wouldnt be with OReilly lining up at center..the problem would be that both Wensink and Jonathan played left wing, and were never on the same line. Of course Terry played with both because he played right wing!
BoSoxnation1972 3 years ago
Dupont was a punk.I remeber him with The Rangers his first game he japped some guy beat him on the way down then threw the knee. Nobody that in the 50 60 and early 70s.Then against the rangers he tried getting at Ron HArris then realized this was the guy who checked Bill Masterson that infamous day.Dupont came to his senses and feebly tried to get at Ron HArris who I think was on steroids then.
thehand2020 3 years ago
Grew up a Ranger fan, hated Boston almost as much as Philly but it was sad to say it was an end of an era watching Dupont get a good licking and NOBODY,NOBODY stepped up or stepped in.Boston tried duplicating the Philly team but were not winners.I think The Islanders showed everyone how to do it. Gillies was an animal and Nystrom was not human.Evidence when Nystrom whipped Wensick at The Boston Garden and went from stunned silence to Boos .Oreilly is still one of my favs even with no Stanley CP
thehand2020 3 years ago
Boston played tough for more than 40 years before the Flyers even came into existence. They certainly didn't duplicate the Flyers and their tough guys were better players in most cases than the Flyer heavies.
BostonGarden 3 years ago
Are you on crack? Did Nystrom beat Wensink? Sure, no doubt about it. It is one of the very few losses of Wensink's career, but EVERYONE loses! Hell, O'Reilly embarrassed Gillies more than once, and lost to him as well. One fight does not make a guy tougher!
And as far as Gillies goes, I think 6 30 goal seasons spoke a lot more of his game than his fighting. He only had 10 fights in a season 1 time, and only 71 fights in his career! O'Reilly had almost triple that, with 198 in the same era!

Moose Dupont sucked, all he was good at was jumping whomever was pummeling Schultz.
fabrasham 3 years ago 3
I'm glad Clarke as GM later traded for Eric Lindros and got zero cups in the long run.

jcnyut000000000000 3 years ago
apparently you never listened to a Sabres game! lol.....Derek Sanderson was a homer.....but Cusick was actually halfway normal. Jonathan didn't win this nearly as clearly as they made it sound in the 1970's...but I'd call it a narrow win for the last uppercut and call it 7 to 4 on points.Jonathan landed the last 4 punches of the fight.
