SEE THAT QUOTE where he says he's getting really good at singing? he's spot on - ! at that point ..he was spot on. that strange tonal rhythmn , awkward as Charlie "DONKEE" Chuck and Shaun Ryder YET really gets it right - no one else like it ...and thats bearing in mind that hundreds have tried to immitate it. yes your right ...priceless
Why did security let an Alzheimers-afflicted mumbling vagrant onto the stage to disrupt the gig? I thought the whole point of gig security was to stop that from happening.
I never knew footage existed from Apr 1998! It's hardly WW3 is it? Good to see Hanley put a stop to things (unlike at Philadelphia, where he'd whacked the great man with his bass). But it's true, that lineup was finished - what a shame they couldn't have ended it on better terms.
Ironic that the subsequent black eye was inflicted not by the departing blokes but by gf & keyboardist Julia, the only member to stay with MES until she too was dumped in 2001. Another female saves The Fall! :D
It's the type of people who DON'T like the Fall but think they do who MES would avoid.
I don't believe MES thinks his contribution to music is nil... he's a big fan of his group, unlike many performers who lost interest ages ago and do it just for money or fame or ego.
The Fall *IS* about music, just not music for the sake of music - it's music done the MES way.
If you think MES is a just pissheads ramble incoherently then yes you might as well go live in a pub toilet!
I was there. It's going to take me multiple comments to tell you about it, though.
I'd only just heard of The Fall that day because a bunch of my more savvy friends had been at the epic show at the same venue the previous night. So, on a few people's recommendation, I went to check them out.
From what I recall, Mark was bumping into the guitarist a whole lot. Stumbling around, like. So the guitarist started swinging his guitar at Mark, which caused Mark to stumble into the drum kit.
That pissed the drummer off. At some point the guitarist left stage, though I think he came back. I totally remember the drummer jumping over his kit and clocking Mark, which caused him to stumble into the keyboard. After that, he pretty much took his aggression out on the keyboard player (his wife?) All told, they were probably on stage for 15 minutes.
I never knew that was the last gig they played for a while, or that it was the moment the guitarist of 20 years left the band. (As you can see, I'm not the biggest fan, though I do like them and this documentary.)
I admit that as I walked out of Brownie's onto Thompkins Square Park, still daylight, I was a little bummed that I caught "the bad night" and not the previous night's epic show. But even then, I knew that it hadn't been a complete waste of time and money.
I had witnessed something real on stage. Real, yet also cliched in a twisted way. Heroic and pathetic at the same time. I'm still not sure what to make of it or him, but he's made me stop and listen many times, that's for sure.
Oof! Very hard to watch. Never thought I'd see the implosion. I really miss the old gang of Steve, Karl, Craig and the lot. Unuttetrable was not a great album, either.
And some subtitles on Mark E. Smith would help, too.

the type of people who can listen to the fall & enjoy them are the sort of people mark e smith hates.
i reckon mark e smith thought john peel was the biggest wanker on earth for liking the fall so much.
mark e smith would be the first to admit that he is a cunt who hates himself & everyone else & his contribution to music is nil.
the fall is not about music, it's about smith. if you enjoy listening to pissheads ramble incoherently...go & live in a pub toilet.

mark should learn to speak coherently, I still don't get why he and the drummer started scuffling.

Oooh, what a disaster. Can't say I'd have liked to be there. I like the up times in The Fall, not the down.
