Universal suffrage, workplace conditions, belief that companies are an integral part of society and therefore, must be responsible in money matters. As for the necessity statement, Marx said that people at subsistence, impoverished levels cannot rise to intellectual bounds.

I have read Perkin's book, and it is a very good story. However, all 'evidence' is anecdotal, and the book has a very contrived tone. Most empirical evidence suggests globalization, free trade, and foreign investment improves the lives of the poor in foreign countries. Read "Naked Economics" by Charles Wheelan, it's a great book.

How could shelter be an unalienable right? Who would pay to provide everyone with this "right"? You? If everyone had a right to shelter, the incentive to work would decrease. After all, why produce anything if everything will be handed to you. Those who work the most will subsidize those who work the least. This would, indeed, be a very poor system.

This emphasis on rights is ridiculous; people should have better lives; if people need something, why not provide it. In long term, people with basic necessities will rise to be productive citizens, rather than lazy bums who can't see any chance at success. Curiosity and neccesity is the greatest driver of innovation, not survival.

No, "Necessity is the mother of invention". I am talking economics, not morality. Those who produce the most must be rewarded the most, and the converse is also true. You will reduce the incentive to produce if you provide basic necessities "free" of charge. Not to mention all the dead weight loss associated with the massive taxation that would accompany such a project; you would also discourage those who produce and, therefore, produce less than before.

I disagree; that theory keeps people in a cycle of poverty, and poverty is a waste of potential; the survival of the fittest mentality only creates a rift between class, and as for how much a person deserves, since it is up to them to decide their price, there is no control on how much profit they can make under the current system.

I almost forgot to mention the most fundamental flaw in your statement. An inalienable right cannot be granted by human power. No matter what resources you have on hand you always retain your inalienable rights (life, liberty, ect.). You can no more have an inalienable right to shelter than you can a TV. You may also believe that rights are granted by the state, so therefore there is no such thing as an inalienable right!

Inalienable rights are in fact granted by the people who live alongside you; it is an intimate understanding. Governments in the past have denied life and shelter to people. The worth of a right is only in its execution. You have the right to be free, but what does that matter if you're enslaved. Human understanding frees us; the guy next to you is another part of you.

You are assuming that these children have better opportunities to earn a living. This simply is not true. If better opportunities existed they would take them. According to the Institute of International Economics, wages paid to workers in American "Sweat Shops" are twice the amount paid to their fellow country men for similar work in domestic sweat shops. These are good jobs, which provide people with higher standards of living than they otherwise could have had.

There is huge corporate presence in our societies now, and not in terms of producing products at fair prices, and redistribution of wealth; corporations now are greedy beasts bent on controlling people's minds. I believe that the United States economy is close to collapse because of this near-sighted profit base.
