  • every great artist has a handicap, also anyone noticed a lot of great artists have the same letter inicials???ex.Chuck Close,Robert Rauschenberg,Me,Pablo Picasso,Hans Hoffman.i can go on....

  • ...my God, you are 43 years old as well!!! EEK!

  • konzwambii you are an idiot, jesus! It scares me how true the statement is... a little knowledge is truly dangerous.

  • konzwambii you obviously know nothing about art

  • To put it in simple terms, Chuck's grid system, despite his hours of justifying talk,is a copout in every sense. I do not have to worry if he is a good or bad artist, because he is not even an artist. As for Rauschenberg, not much there either. Notice all these guys (including Warhol) have one big thing in common: work as large as possible to get noticed. And they did. Big deal.

  • Rauschenburg is great and wildly original (he kept the dada blood flowing). And he could most likely kick your ass in his current sate, you nerd.

Chuck Close is a differnt story

  • To me, its interesting that Close starts with photographs, because his paintings look more 3 dimensional than 2d photographs. I'm glad to know he uses a grid system, makes it seem more humanly possible. The way that he says he knows what those blocks and circles is his genius or the result of massive experience.

Rauschenburg is a serious graphic master as well. Lot to learn from him about mixing media.

  • rauchenberg. nice guy and very interesting artist.

  • Chuck Close makes me ashamed that I complain about my little physical limitations: old age, bad feet, loss of balance, etc. Here is a man, a MAN, who has not allowed his tragic attack keep him from being an artist. Of course, he has the financial means to assist him, but that is not the point. He is an inspiration to all of us. A truly great artist and man.

  • I was fortunate enough to see a work by Mr. Close at the Toledo Museum of Art. I was left breathless. The photorealism from a distance is dwarfed only by the unbelievable mesh of colors in the grids you see when you get closer. One of the most fantastic artists who have ever lived, without a doubt.

  • i agree. people might think close has a really great technique, but I think the great thing about an artist's technique would be the variety of moves he can make and not just trying to do one thing perfectly. And I've seen much better examples of photorealism anyway.

What I do like is that he's helping to bring back the portrait, though I think Warhol was more influential in that regard.

  • You need to perhaps take into account his obvious handle on color theory, which is strongly exemplified throughout his body of work. If you have ever worked among the typical artist these days you would rarely see anyone considering the balance of color as a way to convey substance in portraiture with such skill as Mr. Close.

  • im not fond of the work of Close, it expresses not much and has not a lot offer in terms of ideas or technique, but Rauschenberg is a total different level! This guy has amazed us and the artworld of the 20th century with so many ideas and technical innovation, with such intense and honest intensions and sensitivity, he imo really earned his place in art history. His pieces never stop to overwhelm me. thx Robert!

  • why all the profanity? only idiots fall upon profanity to express themselves--especially when wrapping themselves in academia. close and rauschenberg are quite accomplished. to all those who just spout off vulgarities here, go read some books, see some art and become better informed.

  • yeah, but you sink to their level when you say 'only idiots,' because it's a blatant generalization. you also used a really boring cliche which is telling someone to 'go read some books,' remember that this is totally anonymous and you've done nothing to prove that you in fact read books yourself.

  • gosh, "rictit", where do i even start? obviously you seem to harbor some kind of resentment against America and American artists. that's fine - that's your prerogative. and yes, of course there's great art produced in Europe, Mexico and Argentina. but to suggest that Chuck Close can't draw anything academic is preposterous. Close is one of the preeminent living painters - to suggest that his art isn't widely collected and bought across the world is just plain ignorant...

  • I am American dude! So dont fuck with this! I know all the shit about art. Thats why i came to live to Barcelona in Spain. Because here europeans really know how to create art. I mean, its a natural life style to be an artist. GO TO MOMA and count all the paintings of the Europeans and count those who were made in USA. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!These artist only sell in the fucking american banks and thats it!

  • I sorta agree , Chuck Close paints from photos, what a rip off, any student of art can do that, i'd like to see Close draw from life. As an artist myself, I know his technique and can easily reproduce his work, that is a shame, it should take years to learn to paint ,and his grid technique is too easy. Artists are so lazy nowadays

  • My favorite response to the "I/My kid can do that!" argument is as follows:

"So why don't you?" If you can make copies of Chuck Close, do it. Try to sell them. I bet some people said they were as good as Close when he was starting out in the 70s, but they aren't. They aren't as good because they didn't do it and we don't know who they are.

  • USA always trying to exagerate what americans artists do!!! These is not art, i mean it is interesting but i dont feel nothing for this shit!!! I mean, there are a lot of fucking better artists in the world right now infinite better than these idiots! Why these idiots dont sell this shit in Europe, japan, Latinamerica????Only americans guys with money buys this idiotic crap!!!

  • you are ignorant as fuck. im not to fond of chuck close but damn you're making yourself look fucken ghet. europian artist like lucian freud or francis bacon are some of my favorites but that doesnt mean they are better because they're europian. they're good because of what they do. location of an artist is just that, LOCATION. location doesnt make one artist better than another. fucken dumnass thinks that he knows something about the art business. you dont know shit, fuck ass.

  • Of course it does, idiot. Art is CULTURE. So if americans dont have a culture background, how can americans create art or an ideology of fine arts? Go to Europe or Latin America and you will see the FUCKING difference. These continents have culture= ART as a natural expression! USA only knows how to do money and thats it!!!!!!!!Thats why MOMA, its best paintings, are from European, Japanese and Latinamericans! YOU ARE SO NAIVE DUDE YOU NEED TO STOP WATCHING T.V.

  • i saw a Chuck Close retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago about five or six years ago. absolutely mind-blowing. one of the best shows i've ever seen by any artist in any medium. and he has such an indefatigible work ethic!

  • What the fuck are you saying, i mean these idiots are not real artists, these idiots are not capable of creating a fucking academic drawing! These idiots should be scientifics, for all the stupid explanations, and uses of techniques! What the Fuck , go to Europe, Mexico, Argentina and you will see that these shit is nothing compared to the real art!

  • just because they tend not to doesn't mean they can't. Stop making things up

  • wow.thnks for this video
