@StringThrough if you always pull out the cable, they last around 9-15 months, depending on how much do you play and what battery you use. if you let the cable in, it will be down in 4 weeks.
@givemeajackson i play usually 4-5 days a week, anywhere from 30 mins to 3 hours, and i always pull out the cable. i find it very strange myself that the battery is still going. i have been thinking lately that i should change it or it might die someday when im on stage haha
I never understood why such a bluesy-feel-player like him could have choose such cold pickups. they may be great for what he describe in the vid, but when it's time to play heavy blues solos like he does... nothing can beat a passive one for that
@Distollica ..........hes a lead guitarist in a metal band and EMGs do a great job.......but when he plays blues he probably has a few strats lying around with pickups........
@999m4em yeah, probably what he does in studio. Thus, I'm pretty sure when I listen to some latter album that some songs have been recorded with passive guitars. Garage inc's first cd for exemple. In the Death magnetic making of, you can see James playing on old gibson with passives too. EMG pickups can be great pickups but it's not good for everything especially cleans
I thought he was implying they sound amazing at the end =/. As in, expect them to sound badass. But anyway. I got my very first set of EMGs a couple days ago. Man, these things just blow me away. I love them.
It's true.. i have 81 81 on my guitar, emg is emg.. only diffrence is b/n position. i (peronally) just dont like when someone gets 5k dollar les paul, and put's 81 in it..
@meshuggah24 yes because the majority of a guitars tone is the pickups wood and other factors do contribute but no were near the difference a pickup makes
@masterguitar95 depends what you filter this shit with? he's not the fastest shredder in the world... but he sure as hell have invented solos and guitar parts more artistic and facinating than any fucking 10000 bmp speed player will ever do. Metallica would suck if they had a fucking show off making supertechnical solos.

lol and its funny that kirk is talking about both of them using EMG pickups in every guitar when james is using a steel deville with pickups that aren't emg's what a great idea!
@ManBearPigInc EWW!! no wonder why their guitars sounded so old and muddy in kill em all. I love EMG's, Semour Duncans, DiMarzio, infinities are ok i guess but i would never go for gibson or fender pickups. theres something about EMGs that just make them sound so open and crisp clean and sickly distortion u know what i mean?
@999N0t3str34k XD are you serious? Dude metallica use gibsons and fenders all the time in the studio. I understand what your saying bout the EMG's (though there cleans aren't great), but how can you talk pickups without mentioning bare knuckle?
what would be the best set-up for a real heavy put together metal sound? the kh 81-85 the alexi or the kirk sets? i cant decide really i know theres only slight difference between all of them but im picky lol
I actually have emgs in three guitars and all of them sound different. One is really thick sounding one is bright and punchy and another is in the middle. (Schecter hellraiser, ltd ec-1000 and dean dc6 respectively)
no one can deny that if you put emg's in all ur guitars they will all end up sounding the same, it is a great really tight sound but it will take the 'guitar's sound' out of ur guitar. But on the other hand that awsome sound is now the face of metallica and when u see them live you don't really want his guitar tone to suddenly change dramatically from emg's to passive humbuckers and maybe even to single coils as Kirk occasionally uses strats and teles aswell
@fc3603 Haha, so not true. Sure, if you've got the SAME pickup setup in different guitars, they'll sound pretty much the same. But a EMG 60 sounds nothing like say a EMG 81. Then you've got their passive and single coil pickups, etcetera, etcetera.
@fc3603 what isn't really the truth because when kirk plays the first solo of fade to black on his esp mummy it sounds like a fucking peace of shit beeing thrown on the floor but if he plays it with his gibson les custom it sound freaking awesome
@fc3603 That's what he said, but I personally see it (at least) a bit different. True, EMG's tend to have some compression and aren't that much affected from the woods and hardware you use. but, that's not necessarily a bad thing imo and they sound great and dirty. These "special" features(?) it's what seperates them from other pickups. Either you like them or hate them I'd say.
@fc3603 are you sure? I've read on alot of forums that all passive EMGs suck but that the active ones are really good, for example the EMG 81, 60 and 85. Or am I mistaken?
@fc3603 No. It depends on the wood type, amount of wood, strings, tremolo system, strings resonating due to specific specs, neck wood, neck configuration (Bolt on, 2 piece, 1 piece), etc.
Put EMGs on an $80 Dean guitar & a Jackson RR1 on 'feel' the difference.
I disagree. My LTD and ESP both have an 81/60 set and the ESP sounds far better. The ESP is all mahogany, ebony fretboard, maple top. The LTD has a mahogany body and maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. The cleans on the ESP sound much better and the overall tone sounds better. So EMGs don't make all guitars sound the same. Listen to James' and Kirk's tones -- same pickups, completely different sounds.
@fc3603 basically all guitars with the same pickup wether it be passive or active sound the same. Sound only differs with wood, strings, and most importantly the player
@bronzehydra3 Yes but think about it, all pickups of the same model sound the same. If you went out right now and bought two sets of Fender Tex-Mexs, Gibson PAFs, etc., those two sets of the same pickup would sound identical. He isn't saying that they are boring and predictable, he is simply saying that they are consistent and let him know what to expect. Different sounds would just be poor QC. There are some 50's Les Pauls that sound like garbage because they couldn't be consistent like today.
@bronzehydra3 well its kind of like putting gibson humbuckers in every guitar. If you put the same brand humbucker in every guitar they will all begin sounding the same cause they are all active and made of ceramic. However, putting single coil active pickups would change the sound.
I just got a bc rich asm pro that came stock with emg's and i am very impressed with how quiet they are when I play at high volumes. They also have a great distorted metal sound
EMG's are good at one thing and one thing only... Distortion/stacking gain. If you're going to kick on the distortion effect and play like crazy high gain metal... you won't find a better pickup, although I won't rule out active Duncan blackouts as an option. But as far as a nice clean tone goes... I don't think one exists with EMG's. It's not a natural sounding clean to me, it's very harsh and aggressive. I like EMG's, but they will never totally grow on me in such a way.
@TheAmadoI that seems to be the general consensus but Iv'e had emgs in three guitars (mahogany, basswood, poplar) and they sounded the worst in the basswood RG I had. Sounded shrill and thin, while sounding the best in my mahogany ec-1000. Again that's just to my ears and I play through a finicky rig (axe-fx)
@Fernandez3995 EMGs are mainly for metal. Pickups make a HUGE difference in sound. Im not sure how it sounds with basswood. For that, Id look more into Dimarzio pickups.
they're good for clean metal riffs (like in the beginning of a ton of epic metallica songs like Fade to Black, Sanitarium, Harvester, etc) but i wouldn't say that they work for EVERYTHING. for clean rock and blues i would use burstbuckers or just use my fender but for metal few pickups can compete. maybe seymour duncan blackouts
i dont really no anything bout pick ups, what are the best emgs for deathcore playing ???????? i have 2 humbuckers and 1 singel coil on my ibanez, do i need the right ones for ibanez guitars?
I know exactly what Kirk is talking about. When I got my first guitar that had EMGs in it I though 'Holy shit!' so I messed with the guitar for a while and then I played my old guitar with passive DiMarzios and even though they sounded good, they were at least 3 times worse than the EMGs.
@MrRagnorawk Same here! I have a fender strat with Kinman single coils in it. I just got an ESP LTD M-300FM with EMG 81s in it and it blew me away! The sound is crunchy and heavy, yet its crisp and clean, Its just amazing. Like you said, my old pickups on my strat are good, but they are at least 3x worse than the EMG
@MrRagnorawk I brough mine in 95 and still remember the feeling. Jackson+emg s81+ jcm800. The pleasure was to play with the ibanez friend then switch to mine.

Every small detail on a guitar Adds up to the Tone...
wood, strings, pickups, bridge, nut, tuners, electronics, and Most important the Player.
My Best analogy is if you Add up every pinhole of Air in your House...
it Adds up to a Big Window being open...
every thing you do to your guitar Adds up to Big Tone!

Emg 81, 60
Jerrymonyor 1 year ago
@Jerrymonyor 81,60 is the best i have 81,85 and its good but 60 is better and 81,81 i dont like it because 81 is better on the neck
sk8rifa 1 year ago
@sk8rifa neck or bridge cause I would like an 81 on the bridge. or the tipical metallica setup. (B/N)
EMG 81/81
Emg 81é60

You got old, Kirk..look at all the gray :(
heero7yui 1 year ago
Ok I know nothing about pickups. First
Do pickups actually make a difference in sound?
Second: would these be good for thrash/heavy metal?
And third: would they sound good with a ibanez rg5ex1?
And fourth: is that ibanez a good guitar(you don't have to answer all of these) just one would be good haha
Fernandez3995 1 year ago
@Fernandez3995 you can put emgs in a guitar made of cardboard and they will sound metal
tank9142 1 year ago
@Fernandez3995 to my ears emg's and basswood sound like shit. The ultimate pup for basswood is a Bareknuckle coldsweat.
oakwestplayer 1 year ago
@oakwestplayer i don't think emgs rely on types of wood
TheAmadoI 1 year ago
@TheAmadoI that seems to be the general consensus but Iv'e had emgs in three guitars (mahogany, basswood, poplar) and they sounded the worst in the basswood RG I had. Sounded shrill and thin, while sounding the best in my mahogany ec-1000. Again that's just to my ears and I play through a finicky rig (axe-fx)
oakwestplayer 1 year ago
@Fernandez3995 The second question is answered by this video. Metallica is a thrash metal band. So you know the answer to that already.
braddudeguy 1 year ago
@braddudeguy I know. I noticed that right after posted the comment. Haha thanks anyways
Fernandez3995 1 year ago
@Fernandez3995 EMGs are mainly for metal. Pickups make a HUGE difference in sound. Im not sure how it sounds with basswood. For that, Id look more into Dimarzio pickups.
Most Ibanezs are pretty decent.

@ChrisTheShreddist
hey ..... pickups is the kind of microfone right?.. the thing that picks up the sound from the guitar and sends it to the amp right?
sorry for sounding so noobish lol: )
fossebabykiller 1 year ago
@fossebabykiller Lol yeah. They're the little black things right below the neck.

they're good for clean metal riffs (like in the beginning of a ton of epic metallica songs like Fade to Black, Sanitarium, Harvester, etc) but i wouldn't say that they work for EVERYTHING. for clean rock and blues i would use burstbuckers or just use my fender but for metal few pickups can compete. maybe seymour duncan blackouts

so it doesnt retain the tone of the wood? :(

I know exactly what Kirk is talking about. When I got my first guitar that had EMGs in it I though 'Holy shit!' so I messed with the guitar for a while and then I played my old guitar with passive DiMarzios and even though they sounded good, they were at least 3 times worse than the EMGs.
MrRagnorawk 1 year ago 27
@MrRagnorawk Same here! I have a fender strat with Kinman single coils in it. I just got an ESP LTD M-300FM with EMG 81s in it and it blew me away! The sound is crunchy and heavy, yet its crisp and clean, Its just amazing. Like you said, my old pickups on my strat are good, but they are at least 3x worse than the EMG
boxtrap21 1 year ago
@MrRagnorawk I brough mine in 95 and still remember the feeling. Jackson+emg s81+ jcm800. The pleasure was to play with the ibanez friend then switch to mine.
