  • kirk looks like a junkie in a car parking

  • love the George Lynch relic Kirk is holding onto!

  • what songs are used in this video?

  • @Haris333ster broken beat and scarred live at mexico city

  • @rachaSka is it the only song in this vid?

  • @Haris333ster yes it's on the death magnetic cd

  • where the fuck are they interviewing him..

  • mine's got EMG 69 on the bridge *is there such thing?*

  • @DweltWidHim999 you mean Emg 89's

  • This reminds me of Nick Menza's Zoltan symbol ad, both terrible lol

  • I wonder how much EMG paid for this :P

  • @Xenthrax lol your so gay for that shitty comment

  • Every small detail on a guitar Adds up to the Tone...

wood, strings, pickups, bridge, nut, tuners, electronics, and Most important the Player.

My Best analogy is if you Add up every pinhole of Air in your House...

it Adds up to a Big Window being open...

every thing you do to your guitar Adds up to Big Tone!

  • @Xenthrax

Wooaw you are officially the asshole of the day..

What's the relation between this and the video?

Why do you free insult him? I just can't undurstand that, show some respect, even to guitarists you don't like

  • EMG's suck.

    No emotion.

    It's just like Line 6.

    All digital bullshit.

Everything sounds the same through them, and little fanboys sit around and try to sound just like Metallica.

  • what is the live i see here?

  • Hi EMGpickupTV can u make a video highlighting the difference between 85 and 60

  • When are we going to see a video about Kirk's new signature pick up?

  • Kirk Hammett is one badass guitar player, no matter what other morons might say

  • what song is playing during the video?

  • @iamtechosenone broken, beat n scarred

  • I don't play metal, or even much heavy rock! But these sound great for every genre. I might get the new hetfield set.

  • Love EMG pickups ! Love the HZs,and my biggest love is the 81-X ! Best pickup I´ve ever played... Keep it up, EMG !

  • i need emg's............now

  • old man, he doesn't look like a hevy metal lead guitarrist whit that hat!!

  • I wonder how often you have to change batteries in active pickup???

  • @StringThrough if you always pull out the cable, they last around 9-15 months, depending on how much do you play and what battery you use. if you let the cable in, it will be down in 4 weeks.

  • @givemeajackson i have had EMGs in my Jackson DKMG since 2006 and have never changed the battery :S

  • @carmoan21 wow. that's awesome! how much do you play?

  • @givemeajackson i play usually 4-5 days a week, anywhere from 30 mins to 3 hours, and i always pull out the cable. i find it very strange myself that the battery is still going. i have been thinking lately that i should change it or it might die someday when im on stage haha

  • @carmoan21 is your battery chuck norris?

  • @carmoan21 damn don't they only use power when the guitar is plugged in?

  • by 'same' means kickass

  • @1:22 "All the guitars i play on stage have EMG pickups" !

Wrong man, except the Gibson LesPaul you use with its original pickups !

    Cheers

  • @ayawascatruth lol his Les Paul also has EMG pickups ^^ EMG doesnt mean a black pickup

  • @ayawascatruth lol his Les Paul also has EMG pickups ^^ EMG doesnt mean a black pickup

  • @ayawascatruth

You can get classic looking EMGS

  • @ayawascatruth No he ruined his Les Paul and put them in their too.

  • @ayawascatruth If you're talking about his Orange Sunburst Gibson LP with the chrome pickups, you're wong. It has EMGs in it as well.

  • @SevrenSavage Exactly.. The guy tries makin a point just by the humbucking look of it .. Gross.

  • @ayawascatruth The LesPaul has EMG dude

  • emgs are good for playing metal HOWEVER if you want a well rounded pickup get a duncan

  • I never understood why such a bluesy-feel-player like him could have choose such cold pickups. they may be great for what he describe in the vid, but when it's time to play heavy blues solos like he does... nothing can beat a passive one for that

  • @Distollica ..........hes a lead guitarist in a metal band and EMGs do a great job.......but when he plays blues he probably has a few strats lying around with pickups........

  • @999m4em yeah, probably what he does in studio. Thus, I'm pretty sure when I listen to some latter album that some songs have been recorded with passive guitars. Garage inc's first cd for exemple. In the Death magnetic making of, you can see James playing on old gibson with passives too. EMG pickups can be great pickups but it's not good for everything especially cleans

  • I thought he was implying they sound amazing at the end =/. As in, expect them to sound badass. But anyway. I got my very first set of EMGs a couple days ago. Man, these things just blow me away. I love them.

  • kirk looks so old in this video

  • Comment removed

  • It's true.. i have 81 81 on my guitar, emg is emg.. only diffrence is b/n position. i (peronally) just dont like when someone gets 5k dollar les paul, and put's 81 in it..

  • what is the name of the song in the background?

  • EMG's 81's and 85's the best pickups ever!!

  • So can I put EMG's in a crappy Yamaha guitar purchased from Wal-Mart and expect awesomeness?

  • @meshuggah24 yes because the majority of a guitars tone is the pickups wood and other factors do contribute but no were near the difference a pickup makes

  • @mmim4 no, when it comes to active pickups yes. but with passive, the wood contributes much more

  • @meshuggah24

i got a crappy yamaha and i love it :P

  • @masterguitar95 depends what you filter this shit with? he's not the fastest shredder in the world... but he sure as hell have invented solos and guitar parts more artistic and facinating than any fucking 10000 bmp speed player will ever do. Metallica would suck if they had a fucking show off making supertechnical solos.

Kids playing a shitty out of tune version of sweet child of mine, in the guitar store... THEY SUCK

  • @masterguitar95 jelous much

  • he doesnt deserve to play on EMGs

  • @math1st

thats a pretty fucking stupid thing to say...and you do? mr.i do nothing except jack off to youtube vids

  • @math1st do you play guitar? send me a solo you have written

  • Do you guys know, why EMG's sound sterile?

Cause they use Kirk Hammet's sperm when making them.

  • damn. Kirk looks old lol

  • haha ive never seen Kirk with a hat on :p

  • haha ive never seen Krik wth a hat on

  • lol and its funny that kirk is talking about both of them using EMG pickups in every guitar when james is using a steel deville with pickups that aren't emg's what a great idea!

  • what pickups was james using b4 semour duncan lol

  • @999N0t3str34k probably the stock gibson pickups

  • @ManBearPigInc EWW!! no wonder why their guitars sounded so old and muddy in kill em all. I love EMG's, Semour Duncans, DiMarzio, infinities are ok i guess but i would never go for gibson or fender pickups. theres something about EMGs that just make them sound so open and crisp clean and sickly distortion u know what i mean?

  • @999N0t3str34k XD are you serious? Dude metallica use gibsons and fenders all the time in the studio. I understand what your saying bout the EMG's (though there cleans aren't great), but how can you talk pickups without mentioning bare knuckle?

  • @ManBearPigInc emg pickups are great clean only the 60 though thats why metallica have one of the best clean tones ever

  • @TheNameIsOZZY james does use 60's in the neck but you should also remember that he also dabbles his cleans with effects

The emg-81 (the go to bridge pick-up) has terrible cleans imo, some emg single coils have lovely ones but nothing compares to a stratocaster

Horses for Courses really, it's all about preference, i'd prefer bare knuckle pickups, now there's some crispy low-end for ya

  • i love kirks wigiboard emg pickup series

  • i have emgs in my kh-2 and mx 250 and they sound different !

  • what would be the best set-up for a real heavy put together metal sound? the kh 81-85 the alexi or the kirk sets? i cant decide really i know theres only slight difference between all of them but im picky lol

  • Whats that song at the beginning?

  • @londonkol Broken Beat & Scarred from their latest album Death Magnetic

  • I actually have emgs in three guitars and all of them sound different. One is really thick sounding one is bright and punchy and another is in the middle. (Schecter hellraiser, ltd ec-1000 and dean dc6 respectively)

  • i'm glad he didn't play anything. it would've put me off of EMGs.

  • no one can deny that if you put emg's in all ur guitars they will all end up sounding the same, it is a great really tight sound but it will take the 'guitar's sound' out of ur guitar. But on the other hand that awsome sound is now the face of metallica and when u see them live you don't really want his guitar tone to suddenly change dramatically from emg's to passive humbuckers and maybe even to single coils as Kirk occasionally uses strats and teles aswell

  • good lord he's lookin old....but same energy and sound as alays, i hope metallica never dies.

  • metallica is for pussies

  • @vicgarcia30 then why did you come to this video about metallica...u clearly saw the title.

  • @vicgarcia30 thats why u watched this bitch ass punk

  • I've had EMG 81/85s in my Les Paul for about a week now and I LOVE them. I'm considering putting EMGs in ALL my guitars.

  • kirk is awesome!

actually, just saying but he has one gibson les paul that he uses live for fade to black that doesn't have emgs installed.

  • At the end... he's basically saying all EMG's sound the same haha

  • @bronzehydra3 actually all guitars which have EMGs sound the same

  • @fc3603 Haha, so not true. Sure, if you've got the SAME pickup setup in different guitars, they'll sound pretty much the same. But a EMG 60 sounds nothing like say a EMG 81. Then you've got their passive and single coil pickups, etcetera, etcetera.

  • @fc3603 Do all of EMG pickups have the same sound?

  • @fc3603 what isn't really the truth because when kirk plays the first solo of fade to black on his esp mummy it sounds like a fucking peace of shit beeing thrown on the floor but if he plays it with his gibson les custom it sound freaking awesome

  • @fc3603 That's what he said, but I personally see it (at least) a bit different. True, EMG's tend to have some compression and aren't that much affected from the woods and hardware you use. but, that's not necessarily a bad thing imo and they sound great and dirty. These "special" features(?) it's what seperates them from other pickups. Either you like them or hate them I'd say.

  • @fc3603 are you sure? I've read on alot of forums that all passive EMGs suck but that the active ones are really good, for example the EMG 81, 60 and 85. Or am I mistaken?

  • @dadikiuz yep...81, 85, n 60 rocks....passive emg's pretty much suck!!!!

  • @shambometallicafan i like the hz's. check out the schecter damien demo by musik schmidt. they kick ass. still prefer dimarzio and duncans

  • @fc3603 no, all metal guitarists with emg sounds the same... Listen to steve lukather's unic emg sound

  • @fc3603 Loooooooooool, try zakk wylde's EMG HZ on his epiphone signature, and 8/85 for kirk... You're crazy man !

  • @fc3603 EMG pickups get boring.tell that to zakk wylde

  • Comment removed

  • @fc3603 No. It depends on the wood type, amount of wood, strings, tremolo system, strings resonating due to specific specs, neck wood, neck configuration (Bolt on, 2 piece, 1 piece), etc.

Put EMGs on an $80 Dean guitar & a Jackson RR1 on 'feel' the difference.

  • @fc3603

I disagree. My LTD and ESP both have an 81/60 set and the ESP sounds far better. The ESP is all mahogany, ebony fretboard, maple top. The LTD has a mahogany body and maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. The cleans on the ESP sound much better and the overall tone sounds better. So EMGs don't make all guitars sound the same. Listen to James' and Kirk's tones -- same pickups, completely different sounds.

  • thats not what he is sayin he is saying you can put emgs in any guitar no matter what and it will sound good.

  • @fc3603

nope~Passives and Actives are different hahaha

  • @fc3603 basically all guitars with the same pickup wether it be passive or active sound the same. Sound only differs with wood, strings, and most importantly the player

  • @bronzehydra3 they do. i stuck some emgs in my squier. they sounds probably just like his XD

  • @bronzehydra3 Yes but think about it, all pickups of the same model sound the same. If you went out right now and bought two sets of Fender Tex-Mexs, Gibson PAFs, etc., those two sets of the same pickup would sound identical. He isn't saying that they are boring and predictable, he is simply saying that they are consistent and let him know what to expect. Different sounds would just be poor QC. There are some 50's Les Pauls that sound like garbage because they couldn't be consistent like today.

  • @bronzehydra3 well its kind of like putting gibson humbuckers in every guitar. If you put the same brand humbucker in every guitar they will all begin sounding the same cause they are all active and made of ceramic. However, putting single coil active pickups would change the sound.

  • Hes not all that great

  • I just got a bc rich asm pro that came stock with emg's and i am very impressed with how quiet they are when I play at high volumes. They also have a great distorted metal sound

  • I think the Sound of my Dimarzio D-Activators, are the same like from EMG 81 or 85.

    (got an Ibanez Iceman).

please tell me ur opinion, i want to know if it's worth spending money on EMG's instead of using Dimarzio D-Activators.

  • @Warcraft5555 i have d activators, and they sound better, close to an EMG, but still has more dynamic response

  • the room hes sitting in is so random. just a standup bass, bkues guitar, and funky shit all over the walls

  • :20

if he didnt buy the wah

    when did it come in?

  • fuck kirk had grey hairs ! :o his getting old ... but still his amazing !

  • god he looks like shit mannn

  • Not all kirk guitars is with EMG go watch the new dvd live from mexico.

  • when you play a guitar with EMG,

    the others guitars are shit

  • what a waste of good pick ups xP

  • Look at Kirk in 0:51, HAHAHAHA

  • @665vizinhodabesta what so funny?

  • No on his other gibson guitar is no emg lol

  • what song is playing in the background?

  • @heavymetalguitarer broken beat & scared

  • i have jackson js32t i want to put emg 81 in it will they fit? it came with passives

  • @mmim4 it all depends about the size of the cavity

  • @mmim4 Yes, an EMG will fit in that, but its not worth drilling a batter cavity for it, Get EMG-HZ Pickups, you won't regret it :D

  • @haropro2 battery fits in same place as all wires and pots

  • metallica 4 ever !!!

  • EMG's are good at one thing and one thing only... Distortion/stacking gain. If you're going to kick on the distortion effect and play like crazy high gain metal... you won't find a better pickup, although I won't rule out active Duncan blackouts as an option. But as far as a nice clean tone goes... I don't think one exists with EMG's. It's not a natural sounding clean to me, it's very harsh and aggressive. I like EMG's, but they will never totally grow on me in such a way.

  • I don't play guitar so I was wondering what is a pickup?

  • @miafan89 They are what make the guitar go. They are like the motor of the guitar

  • kirk looks like uhhh whoever plays iron man

  • @icankickflip what?? black sabbath?? kirk looks like black sabbath.. which isnt a person.. how can you not know black sabbath anyway?

  • @KILL3RKI3R4N I think he means, The actor who plays iron man in the movie, which is Robert Downie Jr

  • @KILL3RKI3R4N NOOOOOOOO i definitely know black sabbath! i meant the actor that plays the superhero dude iron man

  • @icankickflip oh i see what you mean, yeah he kinda does..

  • which combo is better:

    EMG 81, 81

    Emg 81, 85

    Emg 81, 60

  • @Jerrymonyor 81,60 is the best i have 81,85 and its good but 60 is better and 81,81 i dont like it because 81 is better on the neck

  • @sk8rifa neck or bridge cause I would like an 81 on the bridge. or the tipical metallica setup. (B/N)

    EMG 81/81

    Emg 81é60

  • @Jerrymonyor bridge

  • @Jerrymonyor ohh yeah yeah sorry 81 is better in the bridge

  • i Love my EMG pickups!

  • Kirk is looking old.

  • is it possible to start off getting only one emg active? or do i have to get 2 at the same time?

  • he said emg pickups like 50 times lol

  • I have the 81/60 combo in all my guitars......sweet versatile combo

  • You got old, Kirk..look at all the gray :(

  • Ok I know nothing about pickups. First

Do pickups actually make a difference in sound?

Second: would these be good for thrash/heavy metal?

And third: would they sound good with a ibanez rg5ex1?

And fourth: is that ibanez a good guitar(you don't have to answer all of these) just one would be good haha

  • @Fernandez3995 you can put emgs in a guitar made of cardboard and they will sound metal

  • @Fernandez3995 to my ears emg's and basswood sound like shit. The ultimate pup for basswood is a Bareknuckle coldsweat.

  • @oakwestplayer i don't think emgs rely on types of wood

  • @TheAmadoI that seems to be the general consensus but Iv'e had emgs in three guitars (mahogany, basswood, poplar) and they sounded the worst in the basswood RG I had. Sounded shrill and thin, while sounding the best in my mahogany ec-1000. Again that's just to my ears and I play through a finicky rig (axe-fx)

  • @Fernandez3995 The second question is answered by this video. Metallica is a thrash metal band. So you know the answer to that already.

  • @braddudeguy I know. I noticed that right after posted the comment. Haha thanks anyways

  • @Fernandez3995 EMGs are mainly for metal. Pickups make a HUGE difference in sound. Im not sure how it sounds with basswood. For that, Id look more into Dimarzio pickups.

    Most Ibanezs are pretty decent.

  • @ChrisTheShreddist

hey ..... pickups is the kind of microfone right?.. the thing that picks up the sound from the guitar and sends it to the amp right?

sorry for sounding so noobish lol: )

  • @fossebabykiller Lol yeah. They're the little black things right below the neck.

  • He got moobs? o.o

  • esp and emg are made for each other

  • did he pick up a georges linch guitar? It sucks

  • Fuck kirk looks old in this

  • has anyone tried the the emg f-h2?

  • sucks kirks getting old =/

  • It's Rene Higuita!

  • they're good for clean metal riffs (like in the beginning of a ton of epic metallica songs like Fade to Black, Sanitarium, Harvester, etc) but i wouldn't say that they work for EVERYTHING. for clean rock and blues i would use burstbuckers or just use my fender but for metal few pickups can compete. maybe seymour duncan blackouts

  • 2:04

so it doesnt retain the tone of the wood? :(

  • woah he already had grey hair and hes like what? 46?

  • @MeteoraXV 48

  • i dont really no anything bout pick ups, what are the best emgs for deathcore playing ???????? i have 2 humbuckers and 1 singel coil on my ibanez, do i need the right ones for ibanez guitars?

  • @crowquill777

    haha deathcore?

anykind with all the fuckin distortion pedals you can get

  • I know exactly what Kirk is talking about. When I got my first guitar that had EMGs in it I though 'Holy shit!' so I messed with the guitar for a while and then I played my old guitar with passive DiMarzios and even though they sounded good, they were at least 3 times worse than the EMGs.

  • @MrRagnorawk Same here! I have a fender strat with Kinman single coils in it. I just got an ESP LTD M-300FM with EMG 81s in it and it blew me away! The sound is crunchy and heavy, yet its crisp and clean, Its just amazing. Like you said, my old pickups on my strat are good, but they are at least 3x worse than the EMG

  • @MrRagnorawk I brough mine in 95 and still remember the feeling. Jackson+emg s81+ jcm800. The pleasure was to play with the ibanez friend then switch to mine.
