  • Lhh im jes now watchin dis part

  • In the beginning Sofia was strong-willed, confident, independent, and brave for even standing up to a white person during those times; but it seems all her spirit was taken after that altercation with the mayor, being mobbed by the angry crowd, and forced to work for that white lady all those years.... Very ugly times

  • This was so sad! The man could knock out the woman but the woman can't knock out the man! She did not have to work for some lady by force but by choice! THAT IS SO WRONG! But racism was real big back then! And the sheriff supposed to stand for the law hit her with a gun! That stinks

  • wow.

  • That little boy was too cute he didn't like how that white ass lady was kissing all on him

  • Nasty lazy white whore knew what she said but just didn't want to face the facts

  • it's a word... get over it lol

  • "Your children are so clean" Wow, really?

  • ...ugly times! great film!!!

  • I don't know what it is, but when she's screaming out "Help me!" it's heartbreaking to me because there's so much distress and pleading in her voice. Maybe it's b/c the character, Sophia, is so tough and strong so to hear this kind of desperation from her is shocking and sad. Oprah Winfrey did a fantastic job.

  • They couldn't show her punching him but they could show her underwear?

  • damn she did a 8 year bid for punching a white man

  • She could have just said "no, I would not like to be your maid".

  • And to think ...this was society.

  • DAMN TRUCK!!!!!

  • to see the Book of Revelations

of the Popol Vuh as a feature-length film, google:

    THE MYTH OF TIME

  • Not all white people are bad, evil and racist. Anyone can be racist. And one shouldn't blame or hate whites because of what has been done in the past. That's just plain igonorant. Another thing, not all whites owned slaves. Blacks and Native Americans owned and sold slaves too. Blacks in the north may have been free but they still had to deal with shit on a daily basis.

  • @PurpleHazeHippie what does this have to do with this scene o_O....or are you referring to a comment?

  • @jazzyphay21 replying to a comment

  • I saw Color Purple some 20 years ago and i could never forget this scene. So powerful. Thanks for posting it.

  • This is so sad

  • un des très rare bon film de spiedberg

  • hahahahahaha.

  • GOT DAMN!!! HE KNOCKED HER OUT WIT A GUN!!!

  • white man is the true blue devil

  • @TrueDaturaMindNz It is a shame that people think like you.

  • @szumwalt why is it a shame ? how much can you know about how i think from that?

  • She was a bad sistah before they beat her down. Took a whole town to do it.

  • so god this couled not happen today here in america

  • @gnil2000 how do you even know it happened back then? i'ts a movie lol

  • at 1:05 you can hear her say "How...YOU doin?"

  • so glad this wouled not happen in america today

  • Oprah back in her prime.

  • FUCK WHITE PEOPLE (BACK THEN!!)

  • sofia almost looks like nell carter

  • the guy with the guitar kinda look like bruno mars lolz

  • Comment removed

  • @iloveyou1997jd Perhaps Bruno Mars could star in the remake of the Color Purple if there is one coming soon.

  • Greatest Movie ever

  • And now all those white people Work for Oprah!

  • @kjag23 hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kjag23 LOL classic comment XD

  • It's really melancholy to see that a independent woman is trying to stand up for herself gets treated like dirt all because she wouldn't work for some white lady who can't do anything for herself.

  • It's heartbreakening to know how people were treated, and in some cases, are treated today.

  • -_O LAUGHABLE!!!!

    Truth Vs Lies

  • in the book it took 12 police officers to pull her off and she was still fighting

  • #blackhistory [VIDEO]

  • I love Sophia's tenacity.

  • i would have beat some whie ass

  • Everyone grow up and realize there's more to life than "internet arguing". Nobody wins.

  • I found this part of the movie very, very sad. But looking at it over again I say to myself common sense is a motherf@cker because that one dude stepped up and slapped Sophia and had to be dusted off...all the other people no matter how mad and angry they were they pointed their finger but not a single one of them hit her UNTIL one came with a gun. I have a feeling it would have been a lot of dusty white people in that crowd if they would have been bold enough to hit her again lol.

  • Sorry, I'm married 8 yrs to a reubenesque, assertive black woman that I practically worship and this scene sends shivers up my spine.

  • Like most Americans, poor Sophia thought slavery ended in 1865. I watched an episode of "Dirty Jobs", just yesterday where a woman in North Carolina was bagging rice on a plantation owned by a middle aged white man she raised as a nanny. She looked like she was about to keel over. Probably never left that county. What made it even sadder was her grandaughter was there beside her. Some deep south schools are as effective at preventing escape as shackles, torture and the rebel army ever were

  • you go sofia

  • why miss sofia... yoo shaw does look ugleee... ahahahaha!!!

  • I wish they had let us really watch her punch him in the kisser!

  • If this was Modern Oprah would say "Fuck No"

  • If only Oprah had ran as soon as she punched the guy

    T_T

  • I just want to bite somebody when I watch this! grrrrrr rage

  • If they ever remade this movie dont you think Viola Davis could play this role?

  • Oprah is such a great Actress in this Movie and She should do more acting roles more often than just being an influential Talk Show Host.

  • Shows what little class he has to hit a woman and in front of her kids like that. What a piece of shit, yet he needs a whole town to come to his rescue, he can't fend for himself, typical for those men who beat on women.

What a lazy bitch, can't even clean her own damn house, and she can't drive, what a useless hoebag. Why doesn't she try learning something on her own, bitch probably don't even know how to take a bath.

  • @stratusfied2222 its a film you fucking idiot

  • @rberry978 I know that you dumbass

  • @rberry978 Shit like that really did happen though

  • @rberry978 no its for real hahahah!

  • I like how nobody cared that she got slapped and then a whole dam crowd of white people ran to come save one white dude....

  • Did anyone else see her underwear at the end? Of course that's a small matter compared to the power of this scene, but I wonder if that was revealing was intended. I mean to me it really shows the ridicule Sophia went through.

  • pause at 0:56..Oprah has got the eye of the tiger look..LOL..

  • She couldn't have just said "no thanks, I don't need a job?" Uncalled for rudeness sometimes has repercussions, excessive though they were.

  • @ariamne1........wow!......shudder:((

  • I can feel the strength and I just got goosebumps!

  • well....at least now we know that the KKK used to be composed of civilized people hah

  • I laugh so hard...when... she says... I SAID I'S MARRIED NAO!

  • Hell no I said hell

  • damn oprah got knocked the fuck out

  • RUN MORPHEUS RUUUUN!!!!! oh wait...

  • HELL NO!

  • Powerful performance!

  • yeah suck it to him!!!!... love this movie, it speaks the truth of rank disrespect and discrimination from ignorant people who bleed the same blood. You were wrong to stand up for your rights and what was right, and black people were view as inferior. This is areally good movie. Lady sings the blues as well :-)

  • He shouldn't have put his hands on her. U hit me, i'm knocking u the fuck out!!! law, or no law.

  • OHH Ms. Sofia!! NO MS. SOFIA NOOOOOOOOO!

  • Strong Black Woman Moment!!!!!

  • This is a Strong Black Woman moment! This proves never ever Fuck with Oprah!

  • @TwilightErik I dont even think we need this scene to know dont fuck with Oprah.

  • i hate Oprah when she talk bad about Michael Jackson, but i love her in this scene.

  • @TheYusmina What does that have to do with this clip? This was before she was OPRAH.

  • @jb26508 doesn't matter, still same person.

  • 白人は最悪や

  • the truck blocked the best part =[

  • @tpp27 make you wonder why?

  • I just love that line..."You're children are so clean would you like to work for me, be my maid?" She thought that was an honor.

  • What did she say???

  • 2010: Starring Oprah Winfrey as President Barack Obama

  • ROFL!!!

fatty: Sheriff!! hep me oh god!! sheriff!!!

[mr sheriff comes and beats her the fk down]

    LOL

  • @JimmyHopkins2 how is that funny?

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH My GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate this part. Stupid MF crackers. That wasnt even right. I swear i couldnt have lived there back then cause i wouldve been dead. Aint nobody finna Fuck with me and especially a white person. Damn.

  • @101rashad

What diffrence is the color of the person "fucking with you"? That makes you a racist and just as bad as any so called cracker. Cracker, lol. Still can't come up with an insult as bad as the n word.

  • @101rashad-Wrong. You ARE a racist. Words have meaning. "Cracker" is racist. Commenting "especially a white person" is racist. You said these things, so that makes you racist. Own it. It's not complicated, even for someone with your limited intelligence (judging by your atrocious spelling and grammar). And I have no idea what "kick rocks" means, I don't speak ebonics.

  • @ariamne1 Im going to just say it, FUCK ALL YOU WHITE BITCH. Enough said. Now take that you fucking whore. DOnt try to jump on here and get smart with me just because its the truth. You whites have been doing us blacks wrong for years and you knw it. But i dare a white mutha fucka to step to me. It will be their last day but like i said, Fuck you, and for your info, kickrocks mean, go to hell. If you would use your tiny ass ass brain, you would knw what it mean dumbass.

  • @101rashad And reply with another smartass comment, ill find you. Just remember that you old ass bitch. Now i dare you.

  • Is the guy with the guitar Laurence Fishburne? I know he had a minor part in the film, but I can't spot him. >:[

  • @AllHailGaga Yes thats him

  • @AllHailGaga Yes that is Lawrence Fishburne? He played the part of Swain.

  • Oh those poor little kids, seeing that happen to their momma. :-( What a pack of cowards ganging up on that lone woman.

I remember seeing this in the theater and feeling such a sense of dread, I just knew this scene wasn't going to end well. It's still hard to watch.

  • This was Fucked up..white maFuca's aint shit i cudnt live back then i wud of died for what i believed in..and took some of them with me!

  • @Nicoleflygrl81

    yeah...sure u would, roflmfao

I'm White and idgaF what my ancestors did...freedom of speech/assembly, dumbass.

  • @Nicoleflygrl81 Sure you would have. You'd be swinging from a tree before you could "take one of them"

  • "I said hell NOOO"..ddiiidd I stttudddder? lol

    Msss SOPHIA NOOOOO !

  • people and their racism, this world is cold :P

  • That bitch heard what she said she just didn't wanna hear it. She should get her lazy cow ass up and clean the house herself

  • looks like a good time to bust out the dual glock 18's.......

  • It is utterly amazing how idiots actually expend time and energy in search of The Color Purple trailors and cut it down to shreds. What complete losers,....nothing better else to do with their time??? Give me a break. These insecure, lonely people are rejects of society....so they thrive in search to cut down other people's happiness and appreciation for this movie that should have absolutely won lots of Oscars. Amazing.

  • oprah whooped some KKK ass lol

  • umm u cant blame them, their parents were slave owners, being this time period...some of THEM probably were too. And no doubt every one of those whites were members of the Ku Klux Klan...which was founded around taht time of early 1900s.

  • @JimmyHopkins2 excuses excuses excuses

  • @JimmyHopkins2 Actually the KKK started up shortly after the end of the civil war in the 1860's. It started to die out, but then that terrible movie Birth of a Nation came out and membership skyrocketed. Such a shame.

  • Love Ms. sophia! "Get her children out of there Laurence Fishburn and to think we survived this and so much more!

  • This scene makes ME WANT TO PUKE!!! I WANT TO KILL THAT WHITE WOMAN!!!!

  • This is one of the most awful scenes i ever saw in a movie. It broke my heart.

  • Another proof that this movie is hated by white people is that in rotten tomatoes this has 3 negative reviews, which arent even reviews! they are just rated by someone and no one even bothered to write why it was rated low! thus, this movie was preveented from getting the rare 100% "fresh" rating.

  • @vikramvaranasi I am about as white as you can get and I don't hate this movie, I think it's one of the best films ever made. It should have won every Oscar it was nominated for.

  • this movie got nominated for 11 oscars but won none. see that? 11 NOMINATIONS not 1 WIN! it was rigged!

  • wow, big surprise, the oscars dont like black people! btw, just out of curiosity, do u know which movie/movies it was up against that won?

  • @leirgauk - Hate to tell you, but the movie was made by Steven Speilberg. Speilberg should have won the Oscar, but that hardly would have placated you since Speilberg is white. And Jewish. He also made the movie Amistad. Funny how so many Jewish people showe compassionate to what happened to blacks in America, and get so little compassion in return (black high school kids were shown Schindlers List--they laughed when Jews were shot by Nazis). Slavery was terrible, but the Holocaust was worse

  • @ariamne1 how many people died in the middle passage calamity alone?? how many decades was slavery legal in the US?? i think i have said enough. so called jews, makes me laugh.

  • @ariamne1 excuse me? u think im black, and therefore also racist towards whites and jews? thats really racist. u're very racist, sir.

  • Miss Millie is a loser

  • Fuckin honkies.

  • Doesn't it spoil the power of this that when you see the scene from above, they're all standing in a near-perfect circle around Sophie? Plus the fact that it's far more powerful when you see the whole film...

  • I mean Sophia, not Sophie, whoops.

  • LmaO smh no it was the principal of it

  • she might as well said yes, still ended up being her maid.

  • Oprah was like Hell NA Bitch i dont think so honey. LoL

  • This week, imma say "Hell Nawl" to every white woman I know and see in honor of Ms. Sophia.

    "HELL NAAAAAAAAWL!!!

    = )

  • YOU GO GIRL!!!!

  • @ustilllyinanyway Wow, how courageous of you! What a civil rights hero you are! And that will change exactly....what?

  • Oprah is gangsta

  • I love this movie. One of my absolute favorites. It's a damn shame this movie didn't win the prize honor. Sadly, this remarkable film was politicized to the point, the Academy panel was afraid to vote for it. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe The Color Purple should have swept the Oscars.

  • Yep...tremendous movie. I also remember them rigging it against it winning the Oscars.

  • On the plus side, it has stood the test of time. We know better than to let the academy (with a small 'a') tell us what is good cinema.

  • I love it !!!! yes

  • I don't mean to sound rude but i kow that was old days but even now i wouldn't feel confortable to be a waitress to white poeple in a job but yeah i understand i wouldnt want to be their danm maid either

  • that was fucked up tho

  • This is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time...

    Absolutely loved it!

  • What was she supposed to say..."Why yes, I'd like to be your maid." (Smiling all friendly as if she really would want to be her maid.) Bullshit! Clean up your own damn house...lazy ass bitch! LOL

  • Hahaha!

  • LOL you know. and she was supposed to soft shoe shuffle and grin too i guess and buck her eyes and say "yes sah, yes ma'am"

  • I hated how she said, "You get to stay "All Day" on Christmas. Big damn deal. She ain't seen her children in years, and she never got to stay because she got paranoid about the black guys trying to do something to her when she got there. That was a Damn Shame.

  • @Boogers4dinner Jim Crow had unwritten laws back then. This was the 1930's South and to white people this colored woman didn't "stay her place." I hate this scene, but that is the way it was. You can say that now. Some people yearn for those days still when whites could boss blacks around.

  • @Mr40acresandamule yeah, these days it's the blacks bossing the whites around...

  • I'm white but everytime I watch this I feel so disgusted at the way all of the white people are acting, I absolutly abhor rascism, and this part of the film gets me sooooo mad. >=[

  • @_@ if it weren't for conservative people...?

  • yep. you do know which political party Lincoln was part of, right?

  • Yes, but the Republican party of the 19th century was also pro-immigration and a lot of other things they adamantly don't stand for anymore. Heck, even in the 20th century, Nixon was responsible for the Clean Air Act.. That would *never* be passed by a 21st century Republican... at least not yet.

  • Comment removed

  • she beat his assssssssss!

  • GET MY CHILL'N OUTA HEER!

  • You tell em Oprah! Hell NO! btw i love that song in the musical adaptationof this show...

  • lol she kicked his ass

  • They are acting as if they can't hear. How many times did she have to say "Hell Naw" before they got the picture?

  • The crazy thing is she couldn't even see what she was saying was offensive. And white people don't understand to this day why we get upset at stuff like this.

  • @ferre77 Of course miss millie didn't get what she was saying was offensive, she was raised to think black people were beneath her. As a modern white woman I CAN see how offensive it is and be disgusted by it because I was raised to believe in equality. The rule in our house was "You are just as good as the next man/woman, but you are never any better" That encompassed all races.

Not all white people still live and think like it's 'the old days' . Some of us have been raised better than that.

  • @lyricsma Well that's a very good but rare thing.

I wish more people thought the way you do. But I can respect the racists from that time period because they were real enough to let you know directly that they didn't like you. Where's today people will smile in your face and act like a friend and call you a nigger behind your back. And that I can't respect.

  • @ferre77 No, the word "nigger" holds more of a disrespectful value now than it did in those times. It's not about being direct it's about being scared. These days, a black person is allowed to kick your ass whereas back then the white people had total control and could put you in prison 8 years or longer cuz that had that authority. This is the 21 century. I don't think any random white person would walk up to a black person and ask their kids to be her maid or she'd get tonguelash her way.

  • If someone slapped me i would've done the same damn thing.. hittinhg her like a slave what a bunch of bs..

  • hell nallll

  • Sophia is Oprah! ^^ am I right?

  • Yes. :)

  • yep

  • Man, to think that such abuses did take place and still does today.
