In the beginning Sofia was strong-willed, confident, independent, and brave for even standing up to a white person during those times; but it seems all her spirit was taken after that altercation with the mayor, being mobbed by the angry crowd, and forced to work for that white lady all those years.... Very ugly times
This was so sad! The man could knock out the woman but the woman can't knock out the man! She did not have to work for some lady by force but by choice! THAT IS SO WRONG! But racism was real big back then! And the sheriff supposed to stand for the law hit her with a gun! That stinks
I don't know what it is, but when she's screaming out "Help me!" it's heartbreaking to me because there's so much distress and pleading in her voice. Maybe it's b/c the character, Sophia, is so tough and strong so to hear this kind of desperation from her is shocking and sad. Oprah Winfrey did a fantastic job.
Not all white people are bad, evil and racist. Anyone can be racist. And one shouldn't blame or hate whites because of what has been done in the past. That's just plain igonorant. Another thing, not all whites owned slaves. Blacks and Native Americans owned and sold slaves too. Blacks in the north may have been free but they still had to deal with shit on a daily basis.
It's really melancholy to see that a independent woman is trying to stand up for herself gets treated like dirt all because she wouldn't work for some white lady who can't do anything for herself.
I found this part of the movie very, very sad. But looking at it over again I say to myself common sense is a motherf@cker because that one dude stepped up and slapped Sophia and had to be dusted off...all the other people no matter how mad and angry they were they pointed their finger but not a single one of them hit her UNTIL one came with a gun. I have a feeling it would have been a lot of dusty white people in that crowd if they would have been bold enough to hit her again lol.
Like most Americans, poor Sophia thought slavery ended in 1865. I watched an episode of "Dirty Jobs", just yesterday where a woman in North Carolina was bagging rice on a plantation owned by a middle aged white man she raised as a nanny. She looked like she was about to keel over. Probably never left that county. What made it even sadder was her grandaughter was there beside her. Some deep south schools are as effective at preventing escape as shackles, torture and the rebel army ever were
Shows what little class he has to hit a woman and in front of her kids like that. What a piece of shit, yet he needs a whole town to come to his rescue, he can't fend for himself, typical for those men who beat on women.
What a lazy bitch, can't even clean her own damn house, and she can't drive, what a useless hoebag. Why doesn't she try learning something on her own, bitch probably don't even know how to take a bath.
Did anyone else see her underwear at the end? Of course that's a small matter compared to the power of this scene, but I wonder if that was revealing was intended. I mean to me it really shows the ridicule Sophia went through.
yeah suck it to him!!!!... love this movie, it speaks the truth of rank disrespect and discrimination from ignorant people who bleed the same blood. You were wrong to stand up for your rights and what was right, and black people were view as inferior. This is areally good movie. Lady sings the blues as well :-)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH My GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate this part. Stupid MF crackers. That wasnt even right. I swear i couldnt have lived there back then cause i wouldve been dead. Aint nobody finna Fuck with me and especially a white person. Damn.
What diffrence is the color of the person "fucking with you"? That makes you a racist and just as bad as any so called cracker. Cracker, lol. Still can't come up with an insult as bad as the n word.
@101rashad-Wrong. You ARE a racist. Words have meaning. "Cracker" is racist. Commenting "especially a white person" is racist. You said these things, so that makes you racist. Own it. It's not complicated, even for someone with your limited intelligence (judging by your atrocious spelling and grammar). And I have no idea what "kick rocks" means, I don't speak ebonics.
@ariamne1 Im going to just say it, FUCK ALL YOU WHITE BITCH. Enough said. Now take that you fucking whore. DOnt try to jump on here and get smart with me just because its the truth. You whites have been doing us blacks wrong for years and you knw it. But i dare a white mutha fucka to step to me. It will be their last day but like i said, Fuck you, and for your info, kickrocks mean, go to hell. If you would use your tiny ass ass brain, you would knw what it mean dumbass.

What complete losers,....nothing better else to do with their time??? Give me a break. umm u cant blame them, their parents were slave owners, being this time period...some of THEM probably were too. And no doubt every one of those whites were members of the Ku Klux Klan...which was founded around taht time of early 1900s.
@JimmyHopkins2 Actually the KKK started up shortly after the end of the civil war in the 1860's. It started to die out, but then that terrible movie Birth of a Nation came out and membership skyrocketed. Such a shame.

I don't mean to sound rude but i kow that was old days but even now i wouldn't feel confortable to be a waitress to white poeple in a job but yeah i understand i wouldnt want to be their danm maid either
What was she supposed to say..."Why yes, I'd like to be your maid." (Smiling all friendly as if she really would want to be her maid.) Bullshit! Clean up your own damn house...lazy ass bitch! LOL
I hated how she said, "You get to stay "All Day" on Christmas. Big damn deal. She ain't seen her children in years, and she never got to stay because she got paranoid about the black guys trying to do something to her when she got there. That was a Damn Shame.
@Boogers4dinner Jim Crow had unwritten laws back then. This was the 1930's South and to white people this colored woman didn't "stay her place." I hate this scene, but that is the way it was. You can say that now. Some people yearn for those days still when whites could boss blacks around.
I'm white but everytime I watch this I feel so disgusted at the way all of the white people are acting, I absolutly abhor rascism, and this part of the film gets me sooooo mad. >=[
Yes, but the Republican party of the 19th century was also pro-immigration and a lot of other things they adamantly don't stand for anymore. Heck, even in the 20th century, Nixon was responsible for the Clean Air Act.. That would *never* be passed by a 21st century Republican... at least not yet.
The crazy thing is she couldn't even see what she was saying was offensive. And white people don't understand to this day why we get upset at stuff like this.
@ferre77 Of course miss millie didn't get what she was saying was offensive, she was raised to think black people were beneath her. As a modern white woman I CAN see how offensive it is and be disgusted by it because I was raised to believe in equality. The rule in our house was "You are just as good as the next man/woman, but you are never any better" That encompassed all races.
Not all white people still live and think like it's 'the old days' . Some of us have been raised better than that.
I wish more people thought the way you do. But I can respect the racists from that time period because they were real enough to let you know directly that they didn't like you. Where's today people will smile in your face and act like a friend and call you a nigger behind your back. And that I can't respect.
@ferre77 No, the word "nigger" holds more of a disrespectful value now than it did in those times. It's not about being direct it's about being scared. These days, a black person is allowed to kick your ass whereas back then the white people had total control and could put you in prison 8 years or longer cuz that had that authority. This is the 21 century. I don't think any random white person would walk up to a black person and ask their kids to be her maid or she'd get tonguelash her way.
Lhh im jes now watchin dis part

What was she supposed to say..."Why yes, I'd like to be your maid." (Smiling all friendly as if she really would want to be her maid.) Bullshit! Clean up your own damn house...lazy ass bitch! LOL

I hated how she said, "You get to stay "All Day" on Christmas. Big damn deal. She ain't seen her children in years, and she never got to stay because she got paranoid about the black guys trying to do something to her when she got there. That was a Damn Shame.
Boogers4dinner 2 years ago 5
@Boogers4dinner Jim Crow had unwritten laws back then. This was the 1930's South and to white people this colored woman didn't "stay her place." I hate this scene, but that is the way it was. You can say that now. Some people yearn for those days still when whites could boss blacks around.
Mr40acresandamule 1 year ago
@Mr40acresandamule yeah, these days it's the blacks bossing the whites around...

I'm white but everytime I watch this I feel so disgusted at the way all of the white people are acting, I absolutly abhor rascism, and this part of the film gets me sooooo mad. >=[

This comment has received too many negative votes show
well, it's a drama.
if it weren't for white (conservative) people, slavery would still be going on today.

@_@ if it weren't for conservative people...?
trentoloni 2 years ago 4
yep. you do know which political party Lincoln was part of, right?
Shanniquitie 2 years ago
Yes, but the Republican party of the 19th century was also pro-immigration and a lot of other things they adamantly don't stand for anymore. Heck, even in the 20th century, Nixon was responsible for the Clean Air Act.. That would *never* be passed by a 21st century Republican... at least not yet.

They are acting as if they can't hear. How many times did she have to say "Hell Naw" before they got the picture?

The crazy thing is she couldn't even see what she was saying was offensive. And white people don't understand to this day why we get upset at stuff like this.
ferre77 2 years ago 10
@ferre77 Of course miss millie didn't get what she was saying was offensive, she was raised to think black people were beneath her. As a modern white woman I CAN see how offensive it is and be disgusted by it because I was raised to believe in equality. The rule in our house was "You are just as good as the next man/woman, but you are never any better" That encompassed all races.
Not all white people still live and think like it's 'the old days' . Some of us have been raised better than that.
lyricsma 1 year ago
@lyricsma Well that's a very good but rare thing.
I wish more people thought the way you do. But I can respect the racists from that time period because they were real enough to let you know directly that they didn't like you. Where's today people will smile in your face and act like a friend and call you a nigger behind your back. And that I can't respect.
ferre77 1 year ago 3
@ferre77 No, the word "nigger" holds more of a disrespectful value now than it did in those times. It's not about being direct it's about being scared. These days, a black person is allowed to kick your ass whereas back then the white people had total control and could put you in prison 8 years or longer cuz that had that authority. This is the 21 century. I don't think any random white person would walk up to a black person and ask their kids to be her maid or she'd get tonguelash her way.
