I'm American, and I always liked and respected Thorpe. All the British riders of that era were good-Thorpe, Hudson, Rolls Noyce,Kurt Nicoll , etc. After years of getting lapped by the Euros, 13 straight MXDN titles, Magoo (RIP) sweeping on a 250 and 500. O'mara catching and passing Thorpe's HRC works RC 500 on a productrion-based CR-125. Moates, LaPorte, Lackey, Hannah.. Anyway, Thorpe was a class act, like David Bailey. He for sure didn't merit being called Worlds Fastest Novice by MXA.

@motonole dont give anything to the brits in the way of a compliment, because you know there isnt a single one of them complimenting us "yanks". celebrate the fact that we completely dominate them and everyone else in the des nations. hell, the only fast foreigners are the ones racing in the AMA series. reed, rattray, pourcel JMB ect.

@zx6arrrgh dean smith? dean smith is a "scot" because his parents are scottish, but he GREW UP in CANADA and came up through the AMERICAN amateur motocross system, loretta lynns, mini-o's ect ect. calling dean smith a brit is probably the biggest stretch known to man.

Loving the bitching between you lot, but there is only 1 rider who can say he`s won in the world championships and the won in the ama championships and thats Bayle. The most naturally talented rider there has ever been and probably ever will be. Carmichael is not the greatest as he never proved it in the gp`s and Everts is not as he never proved it in the ama.

in all fairness i think everts proved he can run and beat top ama riders in 06 when he wiped the floor with bubba and you have 2 remember that when everts was in his prime carmichel was still coming up and when carmichel was in his prime everts was just getting older and dying out still they are both world class riders i would have liked 2 have seen them race when they were both in there prime also THORPEY WOULD JUST WIPE THE FLOOR WITH EM BOTH LOL JUST KIDDIN (when he was in his prime)

there all great riders , its down to opinion , look at moto gp rossi is god there but so is any one brave enough to do the tt, then there is doohan, also rainey the poor sod , he would probably would of went on to win another 2 or 3 or 4 maybe world crowns any one racing at the top of the tree has to be admired , from 125 up to 800 cc or super bike etc... lets face it there all better than us lot writing posts on here ,

Dave Thorpe is the greatest motocrosser ever? I think Bailey, Glover, Lechien, Omara, hell even Danny "Magoo" Chandler would contest that claim rather easily.

i've never understood why the americans do not make a serious attempt at the world crown because on paper they look good, but then again!!!!!! look at mike brown when he took part in the uk champs!!!! total crap.

many reasons americans don't race world championship:

1-they don't have to leave their country

2-AMA championship pays waaaaay better

3-AMA has the best riders in the world

Carmichael won 16 AMA titles, quite harder than winning a world championship. and btw, how many AMA titles did everts win? none, so shut the fuck up

Jean Bayle.? He won the international motocross at 125 and 250, then the AMA and then moved to road racing where his only podiums were in endurance racing. They are hardly the most competitive arenas even if he did show great skill. IMO, NI's Sammy Miller was the best all-rounder. Six podiums at 250CC WC (3rd overall), three NW200 (true road races) victories, nine ISDE gold medals and two trial world championships. Maybe it was just that era.

By the way, where was Dave Thorpe from?
