  • Best is too loud and obtrusive in the begining part.

  • The accurate John Lennon quote: "Pete Best was a drummer; Ringo Starr is a Beatle." (Beatles Monthly Book #249, January 1997, page 5) John never said Pete was "good" "better" or "great" -- just "a drummer."

  • bests drumming was too fast.ringo came in and settled the band down.here the band is flying,no groove or backbeat.

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone Actually that is George Harrison singing the second tune, the first tune is Paul McCartney.

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone Evidently, SOMEONE is deaf.

  • Ringo could sing and, apparently, Pete could not. This would have made Ringo more of an attraction as a drummer. Having a singing drummer just added more to the show. I think Ringo was a better drummer than Pete, for the Beatles, anyway. He understood their music better than Pete. Listen to the "Love Me Do" version with Pete on drums. You gotta wonder, what was he doing?

  • Looks more like Ringo's head-bobbing in the start of the clip and some of the photos???

  • @bjcpc0337 The video has nothing to do with the sound which is from a radio show.

  • Jaaha, että kommentti ihan suomeksi , kiitoksia! :)

    Terveisin

  • Hello, dear bradentonguy50!

Then, why did George Martin let Ringo to the studio, but not Peter?!

    All the best

    Jrahde

  • Ringo fit the group's image was a "Beatle" but Pete was clearly technically better drummer. Even George Martin knew this. Ringo was playful and eccentric. John liked "characters." He had the "vision" of who the "BEATLES" should look and act like. This evolved. He liked Stu Sutcliffe even though he could not play bass because Stu reminded him of James Dean. Even though Stu faced away from the audience to hide his wrong notes, John was adamant about keeping him on bass until he quit.

  • Some groups are great at covers, then crap out when they try convince themselves that they can write their own stuff. The Beatles were the opposite, most of their covers were pretty forgettable, they did their own material with a lot more conviction. "Picture of You" came out a really well, though; it was worth waiting through the other two songs to hear that one. It's definitely one of their best covers.

  • The man who does the garden for my friends milkmans chiropodist once met a man who was from Liverpool,so naturally,he was an expert on the Beatles. He claims 3 of the band always used to be playing guitars and singing, but there was one was didn't,cos he played drums,so its obvious why he never fitted in.

  • Hello you all!

Some people have said, that without The Beatles Ringo would have been unknown.

Sure; even John Lennon admitted this. He said: " We couldn't have made it on our own; Paul wasn't quite strong enough, George was all too quiet, I didn't have enough girl-appeal and Ringo was a drummer."

And sorry for Pete, his fans and friends, but; he was just a Barbie doll's Ken, not a musician at the time.

    All the best

    Jukka

  • @TheDiddlysquat go and get a life like I said .... and stop harrasing me cos thats what you're doing you pathetic arsehole. If you don't want to people to "Threaten You " ???? stop bugging them

  • @TheDiddlysquat I know what my father told me and the evidence that was in print. Maybe you are are just plain jealous, plus you have a massive chip on your shoulder. Thats why you pick fights on here, many people do that. Good way off showing off your social inadiquecy to its highest level. As for me bieng ignorant ,I'm not ignorant enough to start slagging people's parents off ! As for Pat Boone, that ain't my bag. Go get a life !

  • I've heard a lot of early Beatles recently, with Pete Best on drums.

As a drummer myself I find many of the anti - Pete Best comments very annoying. Many Beatles fans seem to feel the need to comment negatively on Pete's drumming whether they know what they are talking about or not.

Pete was quite a competent 50s style rock & roll drummer. Technically a bit better than Ringo - but very conventional.

Ringo had a great feel, was very creative & had potential, which is what the Beatles needed.

  • @SAHBfan And let's not forget he was with them as their 'beat' for some time both here and Hamburg. He was there to help them form themselves into the tour de force that made Brian Epstein's head turn enough to get them in front of George Martin, and we all know the rest. What I mean to say is we should not dismiss Pete, or his role within the Beatles. Without him Ringo wouldn't've come into the picture. Without him would they have created the stir in Liverpool and Germany. Good ol' Pete, I say!

  • @gawagney

"What I mean to say is we should not dismiss Pete, or his role within the Beatles."

Agreed. He also played more live sets with The Beatles than Ringo did, too...

  • @SAHBfan Spot on.......Although I must say, I AM glad Ringo became their drummer, if for nothing else other than his 'look' and sense of humour, ie. charisma, something that was very much laking in P.B ( not good looks but, a 'look').,,,,,,They were both a necessity in The Beatles becoming THE Beatles, in my opinion, though.

  • @gawagney

"Spot on.......Although I must say, I AM glad Ringo became their drummer"

Oh yes, me too. Ringo was never a very technical drummer but he had a great sense of time and he was very inventive. A lot of very accomplished pro drummers rate him very highly as an influence as he 'plays for the song'.

The thing that bugs me is that a lot of Beatles fans seem to think that in order to praise Ringo, they are required to diss Pete Best - and often say things that don't stand up to scrutiny.

  • @SAHBfan As for your reply re. Pro drummers holding Ringo in high regard...........He's been on the cover of Drummer magazine on several occasions...I agree with all you've written.

  • @theselector John Lennon is also known for talking a lot of bollocks!

  • @FabFM It was a humourous comment. I don't think he was serious.

  • @theselector It could have easily been that, but he still talked a lot of tosh.

  • pete's drumming sounds ok from this, even though its poor sound quality...

  • @6digit The only reason Ringo joined the Beatles was because they had a record deal. If The Hurricanes had secured a record deal at the time time, it's unlikely Ringo would have left. Not that it matters now, the beatles went on to become the biggest band of all-time, and pete best went on with his life.

  • @psychodamned Funny how people parents tell tales to youngsters to big themselves up..

by the time ringo joined the beatles he was already playing in one of the most well known bands in liverpool, he was drumming for rory storm and had been since late 1959, they were a pro act and were playing in butlins as a paid act, ringo has already stood in for pete when they were playing in hamburg, so was already an pro drummer.

Rory storm didnt want pete best in his band, he wanted ringo back

  • @sapphiretaurus There was also a quote that Billys Fury's Mum was saying on the Wondrous place dvd that Billy thought "John Lennon was trouble !!! "" lol

Maybe John Lennon scared him ?? I personally think Lennon was great : )

  • @psychodamned In all honesty, John was tempermental and used to bully people around, including Paul, George, and Stuart. Billy was more of a gentler person, so I can see how he might have been scared of John. I agree: John Lennon was great.

  • 1957-1962: Vocals:John Lennon Bass:Paul Mccartney Guitar:George Harrison Sub-Bass:Stuart Sutcliffe Drums:Pete Best 1963-1970: Vocals:John Lennon Bass:Paul Mccartney Guitar:George Harrison Drums:Ringo Starr
  • @claudia949 Actually Ringo joined The Beatles in 1962. So you might want to change that to 1962-1970.

  • @claudia949 what's sub-bass?

  • @claudia949 Sorry but Paul didn´t play bass at the time, he played a second lead and piano,

  • Pete can't play on the drums...

  • Pete best is the beatles' deep, dark secret

  • this the love me do video, this is so dubbed

  • Ringo was technically and musically better than Pete Best. Ringo was the missing piece of the puzzle. Ringo not only provided the beat, but was the soul of the band. Ringo kept the ego's in check when things got heated. Ringo spawned a generation of drummers (many famous drummers publicly acknowledged Ringo as the reason for playing drums, including:Bonham, Collins, Copeland, ect,.ect,.) Ringo provided no more nor less than was needed for The Beatles. Ringo was perfect.

  • George Martin later commented that Ringo was one of the most beat accurate drummers he ever worked with and made it possible to do the edits they did combining different takes.

Great drumming isn't necessarily showmanship and solos, but listening the rest of the band, providing the beat and filling up the empty spaces - all of which ringo does admirably.

  • @Rock123 thank you. Wish these would be the last words on the subject.

    Well put

  • george. oh yeah him. sinatra once on tv gave a very complimentary speech regarding lennon and mccartney's songwriting and then played a very respectful version of 'Something'.

  • He also said that "Something" being the greatest love song ever!"

  • "A Picture Of You" was a British hit for Joe Brown And The Bruvvers, of whom George was a fan.

Many years later, Joe Brown played on George's records and sang several songs at the The Concert For George staged at Londons Royal Albert Hall with a stellar cast of musicians in tribute to George Harrison.

Joe was asked by Olivia Harrison and Eric Clapton to sing Here Comes The Sun, Thats The Way It Goes and to close the show with Ill See You In My Dreams, a favourite song of Georges.

  • boom boom boom boom boom. drums sound like George of the Jungle. George sounds great, vocals are great, bass, drums are annoying. boom boom boom boom boom.

  • Pete Best was a SPAZ on the drums. The Orbison tune is terrible.

I'm amazed they were even able to get a gig like this while he was their backbone.

The vocal work is tip- top though.

  • Ringo was definitely not better.

  • Ringo wasn't even better..!

  • What a bogus youtube!

  • Paul McCartney's not singing.

  • yes, it is paul. You have to remember....this was in an early time in their career when "Paul McCartney" was trying to sound like other known strars like ....Roy Orbison, elvis etc. He sang very "affected" and had not yet developed his own style....."the Paul McCartney style". Also the speed of this recording may note be quite perfect. But yes, it is definately Paul.

  • yes man its the true .. you have very good

defined the style of the beatles

    congragulations

i hope to be you friend ....and yes paul is singing

  • Its a pity they didn´t play the Star club-Cavern club hard core style! John said at some occasion "What if the world would have heard have we sounded before 62!". But on the other hand one member of the Searchers recorded them in a very bad quality in December 62 at Star Club. Sadly they didn´t have the tape-recorders of today!

  • @Melchersson I wish you people would get your facts right. It wasn´t one of the Searchers, on the 31st December 1962, Ted "KingSize" Taylor asked John if he could tape the evening and he would pay for the beers, John, of course said yes, so it was taped on an old Grundig tape recorder with one Mic. hanging in the middle of the stage

  • well it ain't bloody roy Orbison.

  • Duh, it's the love me do music video... It's just filler for the song.

  • Obviously the sound quality is poor, but this is the first time the Beatles appeared on the radio and the first time they wore suits onstage!

  • what ever song BEATLES did wether good or poor sound....BEATLES did it BEST. LONG LIVE THE BEATLES :o)

  • haha what is bestie doing? with all due respect (and believe me i've plenty) you can hear he wasn't cutting it here, unsettled, too busy, clompy, doing something a bit foreign to whats going on, anyway HE was a Beatle so bollocks to my opinion eh..

  • You're right, the video is completely separate from the audio. In the video, they're playing Love Me Do and then Twist and Shout, and also, that's Ringo in the video playing drums.

  • This video has nothing to do with this recording? That is Ringo not Pete Best in the video. But it is not Ringo in recording.

  • the video doesnt match the recording

  • This is the Beatles. Its their first BBC show. Its on the bootleg box set "The Beatles Complete BBC Sessions".

  • You cant miss to hear Paul´s voice! Of course I know its him and the Beatles because I heard it before on a documentary of the Beatles. But if you do not know it could be easily mixed up with the Roy Orbison version of the same song. But honestly I assure you! And it is 1962 in the spring sometime.

  • It is.

  • sounds more like early Roy Orbison

  • i think george would disagree with you on that one, just like, townshend, clapton,

vaughn and well millions of others.

  • A lot of women don't understand Hendrix.

  • That claim surprises me. Hendrix played along with some of the girl bands of his era (yes, there were some). If women didn't understand Hendrix, they would never have done so and/or the songs would never have been bought.

  • Isn't this closer to 1964 (judging by their hair)?

  • the video is not of the concert being played

  • ah okay. thanks.

  • John Paul George and Ringo... thats all I expect

  • Comment removed

  • None of them sound very good on this tape. It's hard to hear the drumming.

  • This is probably the Closest that I / We will ever-hear , to a Complete Recording of This Particular Radio Program/Broadcast. Thanks for posting!

  • awesome thx for posting^^

  • when Pete joined the Beatles, he only had about 2 years experience of drumming and he always kept a distance away from John, Paul and George. While they were writing song Pete would be somewhere els by himself.

  • Pete best was a good drummer , but Ringo was a better more versatile drummer whose drumming style better fit the direction the Beatles were going with their music .

  • i hear rumours about what happened to PB and they change my opinin all the time one is that he was supposedly really handsome and all the liverpool ladies lovd him and the boys didnt like it the other is that EMI said he was rubbish and one rumour i heard which is true is that after a gig they did all the fans crowded around pete and he didnt call the others back he took the spotlight and didnt share pauls dad even said something to him like i think youre were selfish not calling the others back

  • there were Several Factors involved. with John + George now-deceased , only Paul McCartney knows-for-sure , but don't count-on-Him telling the "Whole" Story.

  • My Uncle came from liverpool and he said you never heard the beatles at there best unless you were in the original cavern,

  • WHY? He's a millionaire now and his name will go down in Beatles history. I don't feel sorry for him AT ALL!

  • The never ending story: Was Pete Best not good enough as a drummer for the Beatles? A lot of people, especially the EMI-staff, said, he wasn´t good. The Anthology-Tapes proove that. Even the Polydor- and Decca-Recordings show, that he hadn´t the drive, Ringo had. He sounded boaring. George was a good friend of Ringo and Paul didn´t want to have a better looking member in the band. Reasons enough to fire him, I think.

  • Great performance. Paul's Roy Orbinson is right on the money. I enjoyed the heavy drum beat on the first two songs.

I met Pete Best in 2005 and he is a very sweet fella.

I think there were probably a lot of variables behind his replacement - including timing. Had Decca signed them, he probably would have remained their drummer.

  • WOW!!

  • With the audio being Pete Best, why show pics of RIngo?

  • at least they had gotten rid of that horrible bassist by now.

  • The song is with pete best but the video is the 'Love Me Do' video.

  • The video of this video is just a compilation of other videos.

  • this is from the bbc sessions on March 7th 1962. They also played please mr postman, ask me why, and besame mucho

  • Sorry to Contradict you. Actually it was Hello Little Girl (recorded but not transmitted) Memphis TN, Dream Baby and Please Mr. Postman recorded March 7th, Transmitted on March 8th 1962 on Here We Go. Ask Me Why performed with Besame Mucho and Picture of You, Recorded June 11, 1962, Transmission was on June 15, 1962.

  • @tony00165 You've got to write that book!

  • all that stuff about the drumming is fascinating to read

  • PAUL IS GORGEOUS

  • A great insight into The Beatles early days and their style influences...basically all the 50's rocker icons. RIP Carl Perkins.

  • Love Me Do video

same person has twist and shout video for i saw her standing there

  • this video doesn't match the sonh thats being played every one knows thats the video for love me do

  • that might be because the sound is from a RADIO show!!!! ...

  • Interesting...alright man, I'll buy it. I still have contention though with the assertion that Lennon wasn't "magnetic", esp in those early days. That seems backwards to me. Lennon seemed bursting with energy in every recording from the early days I've seen/heard. True, I wasn't there, though...

  • Stu had a slight turn in his eye (Hence the dark glasses)and my friend Dave May taught Stu to play 3 Eddie cochran songs on the bass. He was allowed to measure stu's bass and make his own. I went to Bootle Grammar School with Dave and played the Star club in Hamburg in'65 with him. Get Pete Frame's CAVERN KIDS chart (No3)..you'll find me..if you're interested.I was never famous...but then neither were most of the lads..I WAS there and my comments carry more weight than most people's.

  • Guys this is just a video of Love me do put over it. lol Its not really the actual song.

  • WHAT!!!????

look for the beatles song "she said she said"

u think pete best could do that drumming?

or look for "rain" think pete best could do that ? hmmm?

plus, they only had pete best because his mom owned a club and he owned a drumset

  • The recording is originaly with Pete Best.

    There different TV-Shows. Later...

  • i dont see pete.

  • "There used to be a phrase".. according to who...you? A person who would put down Ringo Starr for no reason..dude, don't you have better things to do?

  • I take a different view. Regardless of the absolute merits of the two drummers, I think Ringo's drumming suited the Beatles better. Ringo is a true ensemble musician and listened to what the band was doing.

I honestly don't think the Beatles would have exploded into the public consciousness with Pete Best drumming.

  • Ever thought how evil M J is?

Knowing who owns the Beatles effectively has destroyed them as part of our culture and a lot of our personal histories.

Who wants to support anything to do with that perv?

    Just forget it .

  • Come to think of it.

I did have a mate named Tony. played for BJ and then CG.

  • I like 'Picture of You'. Sounds like a sort of British invasion sound, before the British invasion.

  • its a cover of a joe brown song.

  • The reason why he was kicked out of the Beatles was because of performances like these...He's a clod. Ringo had so much mre finesse..a nice chap, but HE SUCKS!

  • omg i fught pete was well know my dad plyd rugby wif him thy went 2 the same club!!!!! even look it up google collegiate rufc and look on the pics and on one of em it will say pete best original beatle!!

  • I've always been interested in the PB story, wonder if he even knows this photo is up.

  • Uh huh - NO WAY. Along for the ride? You avin a laff there mate.

  • John said in 1970-71 "George been a sort of apprentice of us and now finally made it to our level!"

  • Wtf! George is one of the best guitarists of all time!

  • he mastered some extremely difficult riffs that would become legendary!

  • He wasn't so much crap as he was just a lad of his time. He played simple riffs and solo's that were required for songs. Hendrix didn't come along, neither did innovative/ Physchedelic music till almost a decade later. Lay off one of the legendary guitarists of all time. He is ranked #21 in rollingstones greatest guitarists of all time..
