You gotta wonder, what was he doing?

Minulla on korvat ja on valitettavasti kuunneltava niitä. Vaikka kuinka objektiivinen olisi, niin Pete oli sen verran heikompi näitten aikalaisnäytteiden perusteella, että ansaitsi potkunsa.
Ringo fit the group's image was a "Beatle" but Pete was clearly technically better drummer. Even George Martin knew this. Ringo was playful and eccentric. John liked "characters." He had the "vision" of who the "BEATLES" should look and act like. This evolved. He liked Stu Sutcliffe even though he could not play bass because Stu reminded him of James Dean. Even though Stu faced away from the audience to hide his wrong notes, John was adamant about keeping him on bass until he quit.
Some groups are great at covers, then crap out when they try convince themselves that they can write their own stuff. The Beatles were the opposite, most of their covers were pretty forgettable, they did their own material with a lot more conviction. "Picture of You" came out a really well, though; it was worth waiting through the other two songs to hear that one. It's definitely one of their best covers.

I've heard a lot of early Beatles recently, with Pete Best on drums.
As a drummer myself I find many of the anti - Pete Best comments very annoying. Many Beatles fans seem to feel the need to comment negatively on Pete's drumming whether they know what they are talking about or not.
Pete was quite a competent 50s style rock & roll drummer. Technically a bit better than Ringo - but very conventional.
Ringo had a great feel, was very creative & had potential, which is what the Beatles needed.
@SAHBfan And let's not forget he was with them as their 'beat' for some time both here and Hamburg. He was there to help them form themselves into the tour de force that made Brian Epstein's head turn enough to get them in front of George Martin, and we all know the rest. What I mean to say is we should not dismiss Pete, or his role within the Beatles. Without him Ringo wouldn't've come into the picture. Without him would they have created the stir in Liverpool and Germany. Good ol' Pete, I say!
@SAHBfan Spot on.......Although I must say, I AM glad Ringo became their drummer, if for nothing else other than his 'look' and sense of humour, ie. charisma, something that was very much laking in P.B ( not good looks but, a 'look').,,,,,,They were both a necessity in The Beatles becoming THE Beatles, in my opinion, though.
"Spot on.......Although I must say, I AM glad Ringo became their drummer"
Oh yes, me too. Ringo was never a very technical drummer but he had a great sense of time and he was very inventive. A lot of very accomplished pro drummers rate him very highly as an influence as he 'plays for the song'.
The thing that bugs me is that a lot of Beatles fans seem to think that in order to praise Ringo, they are required to diss Pete Best - and often say things that don't stand up to scrutiny.
@SAHBfan As for your reply re. Pro drummers holding Ringo in high regard...........He's been on the cover of Drummer magazine on several occasions...I agree with all you've written.

Pete Best is a good drummer, talented musician but infortunately he doesn't have a charisma unlike Ringo which he has so that's why Ringo became a final member of that band!
@6digit The only reason Ringo joined the Beatles was because they had a record deal. If The Hurricanes had secured a record deal at the time time, it's unlikely Ringo would have left. Not that it matters now, the beatles went on to become the biggest band of all-time, and pete best went on with his life.

My Dad Worked with the Beatles when he was the compere at the Aintree institute in the early 60's.
When they sacked Pete and Ringo left Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, my Dad deputised for a few gigs. He said both were crap drummers, but at least Ringo had the sense to take lessons, and therefore improved.
@psychodamned Funny how people parents tell tales to youngsters to big themselves up..
by the time ringo joined the beatles he was already playing in one of the most well known bands in liverpool, he was drumming for rory storm and had been since late 1959, they were a pro act and were playing in butlins as a paid act, ringo has already stood in for pete when they were playing in hamburg, so was already an pro drummer.
Rory storm didnt want pete best in his band, he wanted ringo back

@26highstreet Take that back about my father bigging himself up !!! My father couldn't have given a rats arse about either bands actually ! The beatles were just a 3rd rate act Billy Fury didn't want them, My father was actually making a living as a singer and standing in for Ringo when he was ill, and then for a few gigs after he left. Ringo could only drum very basically. You wanna get your facts straight matey !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@psychodamned From what other sources say, Billy Fury wanted them, but his manager said he would accept them only if Stuart Sutcliffe was kicked out. They were offered 28 pounds a week for the job, but John Lennon turned it down if it meant Stuart had to go. Rigno could only drum basically at that time, then he took lessons and got better.
@sapphiretaurus There was also a quote that Billys Fury's Mum was saying on the Wondrous place dvd that Billy thought "John Lennon was trouble !!! "" lol
Maybe John Lennon scared him ?? I personally think Lennon was great : )
@psychodamned In all honesty, John was tempermental and used to bully people around, including Paul, George, and Stuart. Billy was more of a gentler person, so I can see how he might have been scared of John. I agree: John Lennon was great.
1957-1962: Vocals:John Lennon Bass:Paul Mccartney Guitar:George Harrison Sub-Bass:Stuart Sutcliffe Drums:Pete Best 1963-1970: Vocals:John Lennon Bass:Paul Mccartney Guitar:George Harrison Drums:Ringo Starr
Ringo was technically and musically better than Pete Best. Ringo was the missing piece of the puzzle. Ringo not only provided the beat, but was the soul of the band. Ringo kept the ego's in check when things got heated. Ringo spawned a generation of drummers (many famous drummers publicly acknowledged Ringo as the reason for playing drums, including:Bonham, Collins, Copeland, ect,.ect,.) Ringo provided no more nor less than was needed for The Beatles. Ringo was perfect.
George Martin later commented that Ringo was one of the most beat accurate drummers he ever worked with and made it possible to do the edits they did combining different takes.
Great drumming isn't necessarily showmanship and solos, but listening the rest of the band, providing the beat and filling up the empty spaces - all of which ringo does admirably.
george. oh yeah him. sinatra once on tv gave a very complimentary speech regarding lennon and mccartney's songwriting and then played a very respectful version of 'Something'.
"A Picture Of You" was a British hit for Joe Brown And The Bruvvers, of whom George was a fan.
Many years later, Joe Brown played on George's records and sang several songs at the The Concert For George staged at Londons Royal Albert Hall with a stellar cast of musicians in tribute to George Harrison.
Joe was asked by Olivia Harrison and Eric Clapton to sing Here Comes The Sun, Thats The Way It Goes and to close the show with Ill See You In My Dreams, a favourite song of Georges.
boom boom boom boom boom. drums sound like George of the Jungle. George sounds great, vocals are great, bass, drums are annoying. boom boom boom boom boom.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The quality of sound is not good so how come you can say precise how his drumming was. Ringo wasn't even better. The recordings with Tony Sheridan sounds much better and even the producer Bert Kempfert was satisfird with Pete's drumming. In the Decca sessions no one complained about his drumming.
yes, it is paul. You have to remember....this was in an early time in their career when "Paul McCartney" was trying to sound like other known strars like ....Roy Orbison, elvis etc. He sang very "affected" and had not yet developed his own style....."the Paul McCartney style". Also the speed of this recording may note be quite perfect. But yes, it is definately Paul.
Its a pity they didn´t play the Star club-Cavern club hard core style! John said at some occasion "What if the world would have heard have we sounded before 62!". But on the other hand one member of the Searchers recorded them in a very bad quality in December 62 at Star Club. Sadly they didn´t have the tape-recorders of today!
@Melchersson I wish you people would get your facts right. It wasn´t one of the Searchers, on the 31st December 1962, Ted "KingSize" Taylor asked John if he could tape the evening and he would pay for the beers, John, of course said yes, so it was taped on an old Grundig tape recorder with one Mic. hanging in the middle of the stage
haha what is bestie doing? with all due respect (and believe me i've plenty) you can hear he wasn't cutting it here, unsettled, too busy, clompy, doing something a bit foreign to whats going on, anyway HE was a Beatle so bollocks to my opinion eh..
You're right, the video is completely separate from the audio. In the video, they're playing Love Me Do and then Twist and Shout, and also, that's Ringo in the video playing drums.
You cant miss to hear Paul´s voice! Of course I know its him and the Beatles because I heard it before on a documentary of the Beatles. But if you do not know it could be easily mixed up with the Roy Orbison version of the same song. But honestly I assure you! And it is 1962 in the spring sometime.
That claim surprises me. Hendrix played along with some of the girl bands of his era (yes, there were some). If women didn't understand Hendrix, they would never have done so and/or the songs would never have been bought.
when Pete joined the Beatles, he only had about 2 years experience of drumming and he always kept a distance away from John, Paul and George. While they were writing song Pete would be somewhere els by himself.
Pete best was a good drummer , but Ringo was a better more versatile drummer whose drumming style better fit the direction the Beatles were going with their music .
i hear rumours about what happened to PB and they change my opinin all the time one is that he was supposedly really handsome and all the liverpool ladies lovd him and the boys didnt like it the other is that EMI said he was rubbish and one rumour i heard which is true is that after a gig they did all the fans crowded around pete and he didnt call the others back he took the spotlight and didnt share pauls dad even said something to him like i think youre were selfish not calling the others back
there were Several Factors involved. with John + George now-deceased , only Paul McCartney knows-for-sure , but don't count-on-Him telling the "Whole" Story.
The never ending story: Was Pete Best not good enough as a drummer for the Beatles? A lot of people, especially the EMI-staff, said, he wasn´t good. The Anthology-Tapes proove that. Even the Polydor- and Decca-Recordings show, that he hadn´t the drive, Ringo had. He sounded boaring. George was a good friend of Ringo and Paul didn´t want to have a better looking member in the band. Reasons enough to fire him, I think.

@Sanders1961 Many eyewitness, for example Chris Curtis from The Searchers, said that Pete Best was a good drummer. The other EMI's technician said there wasn't a reason to sack Pete from the band.
Great performance. Paul's Roy Orbinson is right on the money. I enjoyed the heavy drum beat on the first two songs.
I met Pete Best in 2005 and he is a very sweet fella.
I think there were probably a lot of variables behind his replacement - including timing. Had Decca signed them, he probably would have remained their drummer.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In my opinion Pete was replaced only because he was more of an individual and never really mixed in with JP and G regardless of their comradeship in Hamburg. His drumming was never really in question; if anything the original Beatles sound WAS Pete's drumming.

Yes, its true; after 46 years outside of the reach of the bright spotlights, Pete Best will be releasing Haymans Green an album that, according to the drummer, will demystify much of his image and finally shed light on what exactly happened to him. The album itself has been three years in the melting pot, prefaces Best before laying out the workings of what, in many circles, is a wildly anticipated release.

heres the real deal. pete's drumming was fine. as good as a muscian as the rest for the time. he didnt have the same bond as the other 3 who liked ringo better as a mate. easiest thing to say was he wasnt good enough. in petes heart he probly would agree. john was leader and if he like pete he would have been in and the others would have had to like it or lump it. end of story.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Pete Best was/is an excellent Drummer, originator of the Atomic Drum Beat and influential. Ringo is a different style of Drummer. The Sheridan/Beatles tapes has great drumming. The Decca audition is Brian's choices, not typical Beatles performances. I can't imagine Day in a Life or later works with Pete. Pete's later recordings 64-66 playing the same songs the Beatle sang, I'd say you could replace Ringo easily. Pete's later drumming is great, but his Band's vocalists stunk compared to JL & PM
Sorry to Contradict you. Actually it was Hello Little Girl (recorded but not transmitted) Memphis TN, Dream Baby and Please Mr. Postman recorded March 7th, Transmitted on March 8th 1962 on Here We Go. Ask Me Why performed with Besame Mucho and Picture of You, Recorded June 11, 1962, Transmission was on June 15, 1962.

Ringo was never a Beatle..he was the drummer with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes and when Eppy put them in suits and started to dictate the content of their shows they started to become very ordinary indeed.I saw them die on their arses in the Rialto ballroom in 1962(unbelievable eh!) we died a death as well and the undertakers went down a storm.I remember that night so well. The drum rostrum was too small and I was squashed with my back against the wall and could hardly play..memories eh!.

Aggremo - belive me , he is who he says he is.! ;)
I had 2 hours with Rory Storm on a lift back in his car from Wrexham, late 60's .. what fun that was! I was with his "stage dancer" who lived in Albert Edward Road, in Liverpool.
I also played with a band called Road Agents.
Andy Scott.. was my mate in school, he went on to be lead guitarist with The Sweet.. still in touch with him.
Interesting...alright man, I'll buy it. I still have contention though with the assertion that Lennon wasn't "magnetic", esp in those early days. That seems backwards to me. Lennon seemed bursting with energy in every recording from the early days I've seen/heard. True, I wasn't there, though...

I think Pete wasn't a bad drummer at all. In fact, I think he tried to make the middle eight interesting on the EMI recording of Love Me Do. No offense to Ringo or Andy White but the original releases merely keep time on the drums. Pete at least sensed that it needed something and he tried to take it somewhere. We all love Ringo because we got use to him but Pete never had a chance to shine or grow.

That's Pete giving it that little swing on the the Harmonica "solo" there in the middle of the song, huh? I've been wondering who that was recently, because you're right, other versions of the song are just your standard, unimaginative "boom-click, boom-click". I'd always assumed it was Andy White, the "professional" drummer. It does sound quite good in that section, helps it stand apart from the rest of the song. If that was Pete, then all this "he couldn't play" business is def unjustified
Stu had a slight turn in his eye (Hence the dark glasses)and my friend Dave May taught Stu to play 3 Eddie cochran songs on the bass. He was allowed to measure stu's bass and make his own. I went to Bootle Grammar School with Dave and played the Star club in Hamburg in'65 with him. Get Pete Frame's CAVERN KIDS chart (No3)..you'll find me..if you're interested.I was never famous...but then neither were most of the lads..I WAS there and my comments carry more weight than most people's.

I have my own theory: that the Beatles would have made it big whether the drummer was Pete or Ringo. Nowadays, people tend to rewrite history. Back in the 60's most people thought of Ringo as the least talented of the group. There used to be a phrase, "He is a Ringo Starr," meaning that the person had little talent but was just incredibly lucky.
"There used to be a phrase".. according to who...you? A person who would put down Ringo Starr for no reason..dude, don't you have better things to do?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am offended by you saying according to me. I was there in the 60"s as a teenager, and the media frequently said that so and so was a Ringo Starr. That was not something you wanted to be called. I was just reporting this for the benefit of those who weren't around yet in the 60's, because I have notice how generally people of today have rewritten the history of the era.
I take a different view. Regardless of the absolute merits of the two drummers, I think Ringo's drumming suited the Beatles better. Ringo is a true ensemble musician and listened to what the band was doing.
I honestly don't think the Beatles would have exploded into the public consciousness with Pete Best drumming.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is likely impossible to say exactly what the reason(s) were for Pete's departure however, from what I understand, I suspect that it likely involved several elements including personality conflict, musicianship and jealousy as Pete was very popular with girls. On the musicianship side I have heard that it was very common to replace a drummer for a studio session and that George Martin did not necessarily want
Best replaced, rather he simply wanted to use a session drummer on the recordings.

John & Paul clearly were the talents in the group. And as history would prove, neither George, Pete or Ringo would match what John & Paul did - both with the Beatles & solo.
He wasn't so much crap as he was just a lad of his time. He played simple riffs and solo's that were required for songs. Hendrix didn't come along, neither did innovative/ Physchedelic music till almost a decade later. Lay off one of the legendary guitarists of all time. He is ranked #21 in rollingstones greatest guitarists of all time..

SAHBfan 1 year ago
@SAHBfan And let's not forget he was with them as their 'beat' for some time both here and Hamburg. He was there to help them form themselves into the tour de force that made Brian Epstein's head turn enough to get them in front of George Martin, and we all know the rest. What I mean to say is we should not dismiss Pete, or his role within the Beatles. Without him Ringo wouldn't've come into the picture. Without him would they have created the stir in Liverpool and Germany. Good ol' Pete, I say!

"What I mean to say is we should not dismiss Pete, or his role within the Beatles."
Agreed. He also played more live sets with The Beatles than Ringo did, too...
SAHBfan 11 months ago
@SAHBfan Spot on.......Although I must say, I AM glad Ringo became their drummer, if for nothing else other than his 'look' and sense of humour, ie. charisma, something that was very much laking in P.B ( not good looks but, a 'look').,,,,,,They were both a necessity in The Beatles becoming THE Beatles, in my opinion, though.
gawagney 11 months ago
@gawagney
SAHBfan 11 months ago
@SAHBfan As for your reply re. Pro drummers holding Ringo in high regard...........He's been on the cover of Drummer magazine on several occasions...I agree with all you've written.

Pete Best is a good drummer, talented musician but infortunately he doesn't have a charisma unlike Ringo which he has so that's why Ringo became a final member of that band!
6digit 1 year ago

@psychodamned From what other sources say, Billy Fury wanted them, but his manager said he would accept them only if Stuart Sutcliffe was kicked out. They were offered 28 pounds a week for the job, but John Lennon turned it down if it meant Stuart had to go. Rigno could only drum basically at that time, then he took lessons and got better.

Rock123 1 year ago 18
George Martin later commented that Ringo was one of the most beat accurate drummers he ever worked with and made it possible to do the edits they did combining different takes.
Great drumming isn't necessarily showmanship and solos, but listening the rest of the band, providing the beat and filling up the empty spaces - all of which ringo does admirably.

Great performance. Paul's Roy Orbinson is right on the money. I enjoyed the heavy drum beat on the first two songs.

I think Pete wasn't a bad drummer at all. In fact, I think he tried to make the middle eight interesting on the EMI recording of Love Me Do.

Doug5007 3 years ago
I take a different view. Regardless of the absolute merits of the two drummers, I think Ringo's drumming suited the Beatles better. Ringo is a true ensemble musician and listened to what the band was doing.
I honestly don't think the Beatles would have exploded into the public consciousness with Pete Best drumming.

Best replaced, rather he simply wanted to use a session drummer on the recordings.

actually noones really knows why pete was thrown out the most used reason is that while they were doin try outs george paul and john asked for him to be fired because his drummimg was letting them down and the other reason is that peeps were saying that he was the best looking and really handsome and he had a big following and the others were jealous

It always makes me laught about Pete not being a good enough Drummer, then you could say George was a very bad lead guitar player pretty awful at the time, I think you could have any drummer and or any lead guitar palyer it was about JL nad PM, they were the band the othr 2 were along for the ride.

John & Paul clearly were the talents in the group. And as history would prove, neither George, Pete or Ringo would match what John & Paul did - both with the Beatles & solo.

John said in 1970-71 "George been a sort of apprentice of us and now finally made it to our level!"

u got your opinin I have got mine simple as that. He was crap live open your ears.

he mastered some extremely difficult riffs that would become legendary!
