Omgh it's like somebody has been following me around for the last five months and decided to write this song based on my life. I'm a senior and I dated a freshman (I know I'm lame but age is just a number when you're in "love") and I've Been proana for a couple years... And he suspected but he didn't say anything but he knew I was depressed and stuff and I took a lot of medicine. And I always asked him if he was ok with it and he said it was fine and that everyone has issues. And then after fou
It IS about anorexia. "A fail to kiss is a fail to cope" As someone that has been in an intensive outpatient eating disorder clinic, I can tell you that eating disorders are about control. She can't control the fact (or she thinks she can't) that this guy doesn't want her, so she controls the one thing she knows how to; after all, it works. It is a coping method for control freaks.
She isn't speaking about anorexia. It's a METAPHOR! She isn't literally starving herself for him. She wants his love, but she can't have him. People seem to take this too literally and over exaggerate this. And yes maybe she did have eating problems and thats why she's saying "I'm a mess he doesn't want to clean up" because she's had some problems herself. But the song isn't about anorexia. its about love.
How the hell did y'all get that she is speaking about anorexia? She is talking about being in love with someone who isn't good for her.. She's hungry for him so she starves herself of his loving because he if no good!
People, this is not worth arguing about. Maybe it is about anorexia, but there is more than one line in the song. You can interpret the song however you want; maybe it makes you think of teddy bears and ice cream; maybe it makes you think of death. Interpret it how you want, but you don't have to tell everyone. Because it is just going to turn into a fight (if it hasn't already), and everyone has different ways of seeing things. If you really want to know what she was thinking, email her.
@crazylady2248 Also, artists make art that makes no sense to anyone, because they were expressing their feelings in a way that only they could understand. Maybe she did not care if ignorant people (everyone) understood it, but she had a way of letting her feelings out, and she didn't care if we understood or not. It is not up to us to decide what the song is about, but interpret it however you want.
@crazylady2248 And nobody really cares about your opinion, because they think theirs is right, so just keep it to yourself, like your hands in Kindergarten.
The humor in this song is just wonderful. I think as bleak as Fiona's songs can kinda be sometimes, she's got such a great sense of humor. She laughs at herself in her songs as much as she confronts the guys. <3 And I agree that songs mean different things to different people. For me it's a girl too broken/wounded to risk love on a guy who isn't sensitive/perceptive on one hand but also, is too healthy in her judgement to be with a broken girl like her. Very sad. But also funny.
ok ppl this song is saying that she is hunger for the love of the man she loves but she cant have him so now she is starving for his love so she is metoforicly speeking
I think it's about eating disorders because the "hunger hurts" line. But also she sings "These hands are too shaky to hold", which could be because she's so weak from not eating. I think the entire song is about how she never seemed to be skinny enough for a guy she loves and he never satisfied with how she looked. The "It's all in your head. I said 'So's everything, but he didn't get it" part could be about how it's all in her head that she's fat. Just sayin'.
@PeepShowPussyCat for fuck's sake! read properly the lyrics and then we'll talk to see if it's about eating disorder.. you've never felt in love like she did. hunger it's not about being starving, but to need him so bad like if he's food he needs to eat.
Super props on using the thought bubble thing to correct a slight error. I hate how retards load vids with 100's of em with links for other sights, and stupid trival stuff of no real importance (mostly). 100 cool points.
Look, its about a relationship where her boyfriend is immature and cant understand her. She had an eating disorder and i9ts very likely its linked to this songs for obvious reasons... en of.
I think that when she says starving, she means starving herself of love, or the boy. she loves him so it's gonna hurt, but it's the best thing to do..... love this song ad her!!!!!!!
I am mired in this right now. I'm trying to avoid someone i know is bad for me. But god do i ever want the shit out of him.. and i have to see him every day. It's taking everything I've got in me to face him daily and turn off my feelings for him. I don't think i need to say it's not working. Not at all. If i could just avoid him it would go away. Starving does work.
I have my own interpretation of the song, as well- but I think what matters most in regards to poetry/lyrics is: Does it move the reader/listener? Do you feel connected, or relate to the words? If it moves you, it's done it's job.
Anyways, I love this song! It's amaazing. What I get from it is "I have too much baggage for him to handle, because when it comes down to it he's nothing more than a boy (not a man). It hurts so much to want him, but I can't have him. It's better this way."
you're so freaking helplessly messed up, broken inside and the only person you trust and hope to help you cannot do it, he's not prepared for such a task, he doesn't even want to get involved, he doesn't see what the problem is, it's too deep to be seen.
and you just want to disappear... your problem is just a problem to you, just a paper bag no one cares.
It's all about the interpretation I suppose, but the real meaning behind this song is that inorder to get over someone, if they don't want to "clean up your mess", because inside you're a mess, "hunger" hurts, but "starving" works because if you completely "starve" yourself of them, your love for them will die, in the same since that if you litterally starve yourself for long enough you'll die.
Fuck it is about an eating disorder if you want it to be. Sometimes I pretend Smells Like Teen Spirit is about coming out of the closet. Does that mean it is? Nope ;P.
I think it's up for interpretation. For me, with an eating disorder, it's about starving for love... it's complex. I can understand how it's about love and I can understand how it's about eating disorders, but for me it's both.
It's about being deep and complex...feelings and emotions that are bigger than yourself, mental illness... Once he finds out what a mess she is then it will be over.. rejection, abandonment.. dark secrets that you can't just tell anyone, cuz they won't get it. Her emotions come through her hands at times and shakiness gives way to shame when someone notices. She can already see the relationship fail before it begins... That's a taste of what I get from it, anways. I identify with all her songs.
I find it sad people can't listen to art and just develop their own opinion. For all we know Fiona was dreaming of cupcakes when she wrote this. Keep your opinions to yourself, there is no need to shove it down someone else's throat.
"hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love"
maybe she put herself through the anorexia to distract herself from her unreturned love. or maybe she starved herself to have a different pain to focus on other than heartbreak.
Okay, so this song is about her anorexia. Because as I'm sure most of you know she did suffer from anorexia. It's not all about it. It's also about a boy whom she loves. She wants him, but she's "a mess he don't wanna clean up", because she's so distorted from her eating disorder. He doesn't want to deal with it. But yes, her eating disorder is incorporated into this song.
@cutiepie7897 WHAT THE FUCK, oh my god. Just because she says two lines in the whole song with "hunger" and "starving", she's talking about an eating disorder? Ridiculous. And she also never had an eating disorder. Those were just rumors. She's naturally thin. Shut the fuck up, you have no idea what you're talking about.
@back2realitygal11 You can believe my interpretation is incorrect but don't ignore the fact that she did have an eating disorder. She developed it after she was raped when she was 12. She said it wasn't to be thin, it was "about getting rid of the bait attached" to her body. She thought that if she had anything to grab on her body, it would be grabbed. So she stopped eating to get any fat off. She also self harmed to feel pain.
@glowsticx I prefer the term 'logical', people need to get a grip and realise their lives aren't that bad. Besides, this song isn't about anorexia. People are so bloody dramatic these days and try to make mountains out of molehills...ooh, a bit like the London riots, actually :O
@CplElite The wonderful thing about music is that it is open to interpretation. If you did not write the song then you can not say weather or not it's about anorexia. I think it's not, but that's just my opinion. I do agree that anyone with an ED should get help, but to say their life is not that bad isn't a fair statement. Frankly because you don't know what they have been through. Anorexia is a mental disorder. People with ED's cant just "get a gripe". Would you tell some one with any other..
@CplElite Sometimes, depending on how you are raised, getting help is a sign of weakness. I was raised in a family where you didn't talk about your problems or the horrible abuse you may have suffered. You put on a brave face and carried on. Growing up I thought it was bad to cry, let alone mention how kids and family made fun of my weight/intelligence/personality, beat me up etc. I became anorexic without knowing that is what it was. I am no longer anorexic but I still can't talk to my family.
I think the lyrics go deeper than hunger and starving. When you're in love with someone and he/she doesn't love you back, that makes you hurt, that makes you hungry for love.
But when someone else loves you, and you dont really reciprocate the love, then that is equivalent to denying substance, that is starvation. It works for you but not for the other person
I just saw Brides Maids today and this song was on it and I was like O: What the heck, but the scene/movie had nothing to do with the meaning of this song...
I actually think of it in a different way. I took the hunger in the song as a yearning for the man she loves, not of food. She says how much she loves him, and wants him, but she just can't have him. She refuses herself. In a way, this kind of love is similar to Ana-Mia. It makes you sad a lot of the time, and it hurts, but it works because it gets you to your destination. With Ana-Mia, it makes you thin. With rejecting a harmful man you really want, it makes you safe.
I think that it can be about both anorexia and love. When I am heartbroken I turn to ana because she comforts me. Hunger for the man hurts but starving yourself works to help you feel better? That could also be why she says "I know I'm a mess he don't wanna clean up" and refers to shaky hands, can be both nervous and when your really hungry. I don't know that is what this song personally means to me.
I think that it can be about both anorexia and love. When I am heartbroken I turn to ana because she comforts me. Hunger for the man hurts but starving yourself works to help you feel better? I don't know that is what this song personally means to me.
@tainigurrl lol you're lucky you have a choice. When i'm sad, i get a lump in my throat and that's it. I'm done. And i don't WANT to lose any weight. And why am i listening to sad love songs today? Because i'm in the middle of it right now.
@tainigurrl i think if anything it's about how starving yourself parallels the hunger of wanting someone so badly by making the indecipherable internal pain into a palpable, physical manifestation.
@tainigurrl Maybe this is just what I get from it, but I think it's about love. The girl telling the story knows the man she's with isn't doing anything for her, and she's hoping that depriving herself of him will make her fall in love with him again. "I want him so bad" I think is an ideology of "the perfect guy" she's craving to meet her needs. If this is the case, I'm totally feeling this girl cuz I need me a man too LOL
My sister had this CD when I was a kid and I remember that this was my favorite song on the CD. Now, I can't pick a favorite, but this song will always stay with me. :D
@PeepShowPussyCat It could very well be about an eating disorder. "I need to fold because these hands are too shaky to hold". One of the side effects to many eating disorders is shaking. It could also be about shaking from feeling cold because another side effect of some disorders is cold hands and feet.
OR it could just be about being in that state when you're so sad you just can't eat.
The song is open to interpretation and people are allowed to take what they want from it.
@PeepShowPussyCat it doesnt matter wat its about. people who struggle with eating disorders are trying to find something or someone to relate to. it might be a song. we just dont want to feel alone.
Nice lyric video! You have great timing, and you got all the words right. Thanks for uploading, since I've noticed that you're the only one on here who's made a lyric video of this. Perhaps because no one wants to be the cause of triggering an ED? Ah well, it isn't your fault, and I like the tune! Great job! ;)

With rejecting a harmful man you really want, it makes you safe.

skittlezrock12 7 months ago
@SasoDeiLover7 I don't think of the man as a harmful one, just one that breaks her heart because he doesn't love her back.

@tainigurrl I'd say it's a matter of one's own interpretation.

@tainigurrl i think its just a metaphor. like shes not gonna date or whatever cause she cant have what she wants
124retlksncvlifvlxiu 7 months ago
@tainigurrl I doubt it, i think she's just using the "hunger hurts but starving works" as an analogy or something.
back2realitygal11 7 months ago
@tainigurrl lol you're lucky you have a choice. When i'm sad, i get a lump in my throat and that's it. I'm done. And i don't WANT to lose any weight. And why am i listening to sad love songs today? Because i'm in the middle of it right now.
groovylocks 6 months ago
@tainigurrl i think if anything it's about how starving yourself parallels the hunger of wanting someone so badly by making the indecipherable internal pain into a palpable, physical manifestation.
dellaluna77 4 months ago
@tainigurrl I'm pretty sure that by "Starving" she refers to refraining from love, cuz the "hunger" of love hurts too much.
vetiarvind 2 months ago 19
@tainigurrl Maybe this is just what I get from it, but I think it's about love. The girl telling the story knows the man she's with isn't doing anything for her, and she's hoping that depriving herself of him will make her fall in love with him again. "I want him so bad" I think is an ideology of "the perfect guy" she's craving to meet her needs. If this is the case, I'm totally feeling this girl cuz I need me a man too LOL

@MountainFlower7 that made me laugh, thanks for making my day

I don't believe this is about ana. I think she's "starving" for a certain man.
Still. It's good inspiration when I think of it in a different way.

Oh for fucks sake; it isn't about an eating disorder.
Listen to more than one line of the song, eh?

@PeepShowPussyCat It's all in ones own interpertation. You know because some turn to their eating disorders for comfort.

@PeepShowPussyCat actually part of it is. Fiona apple fought against one for years.
groovylocks 6 months ago
@PeepShowPussyCat and we DID listen to more than one line of the song. The song has a double meaning.
groovylocks 6 months ago
@PeepShowPussyCat It could very well be about an eating disorder. "I need to fold because these hands are too shaky to hold". One of the side effects to many eating disorders is shaking. It could also be about shaking from feeling cold because another side effect of some disorders is cold hands and feet.
OR it could just be about being in that state when you're so sad you just can't eat.
The song is open to interpretation and people are allowed to take what they want from it.
AlyC66 5 months ago
@PeepShowPussyCat it doesnt matter wat its about. people who struggle with eating disorders are trying to find something or someone to relate to. it might be a song. we just dont want to feel alone.

Nice lyric video! You have great timing, and you got all the words right. Thanks for uploading, since I've noticed that you're the only one on here who's made a lyric video of this. Perhaps because no one wants to be the cause of triggering an ED? Ah well, it isn't your fault, and I like the tune! Great job! ;)
