When i was in the stands watching through my binoculars and seeing Kauto dive n land on his neck i dropped my bins and turned away with my hands on my face. I thought that was it. Brill to think he would come and take a 5th king george!!!!!! I know he is a star and a king but can the queen knight a equine sportsman?

Kauto in his prime is the best steeplechaser ever to look through a bridle and there will never be any braver than Denman. They are the two most loved horses in training and everyone hopes they get to a long and happy retirement. If you have to hate anything then hate the greedy owners who keep horses going too long like Persian Punch and Best Mate.
@vidsee Okay, I hate Robert Waley-Cohen instead :S. Just saying I'll never be happy if Long Run wins because I honestly think that if Long Run was the same age as Kauto and Denman he'd be a mile behind them. Long Run will be good for certain but as good as the Golden Boys? I don't know.

His 2 starts previously at Cheltenhamhad been on the old course which starts downhill, that didn't help him settle and as a result his jumping wasn't all that good. He schooled with Yogi Briesner and wore earplugs in the King George and Gold Cup to help him settle. The Gold Cup is run on the new course, which doesn't start downhill, if you put all 3 together, schooling with Briesner, earlugs and new course, you have a whole different scenario.
there is a big diff from what u hope will win to what u really think will win and few really thought myself included that long run at 6 could win the g cup and to think of who he has beat ok i c may have gone wrong but cmon guys lets all give this horse and jockey the credit they deserve. p.s i would have liked to have seen denman win.

Denmans last 2 gold cup runs have had troubled run ins and the only year he had a trouble free time he went on and won. This year is the same and he is a fresher horse after only 1 run and that wind op is just the icing on the cake. I take on board the age stats but in my eyes ive never seen a classier 11 yr old run in a gold cup. HE WILL WIN!!!!
The figures do suggest that horses older that 10 dont win gold cups. But denman or kauto have made habbits out of breaking records. See more buisiness came 3rd in a gold cup aged 12 and who won that race? none other than Best mate and there aint a best mate in the new breed. Kauto is on the downslide im sure of that and imperial commander just doesnt look like he is this years winner off that haydock run. All the horses he beat have lost!!!!

brianboru2010- Denman is no ordinary horse, he is the tank and one of the best chasers off all time, above Mandarin. Off the two greats in Denman and Kauto, Denman has the better chance by a mile! IC is a course specialist, no legend! Bit your right its going to be a mamouth task, but after the hennessy the class is still there, a place is a minimum, but i think there is one more demolition in the tank from the TANK!
Denman probaly will not win no 11 year old has won since mandarin 1962 , 34 of the last 40 winners were age 7,8,9 other six winners were age 10, this is because horses lose pace obviously older they get, Arkle won gold cup age 7,8,9 Best mate 7,8,9 Kauto could be an exception though 8/1 each way is super price, what a friend has most scope for improvement on last year worth each way punt
however credit to imperial commander, he was the only one who could go with denman when he turned the screw and then was too good for the big horse over the last 2 fences.
kauto stars early error meant he was playing catch up. the pace was strong and ruby had to ask kauto for some big leaps. both factors evntually culminated in kauto falling. but it was relief to see the horse was ok- it was probs the best result of the race
in my eyes and look at yourselves at this .. before kauto stars last run what would you say was the best horse over this distance and u cannot back against it going on form .. 4 king gorges and 2 gold cups an unbelievable horse and at 8/1 or more i got 10's for it u cant possible not have a tinkle on him u will never ever see that price on that horse get it whilst u can!
agreed. Imperial hasnt done enough to come close to a 185 rating. certainly hasnt run to that in my opinion. 8 wins out of 18 i just cant get that out of my head ffs kautos ran 36 races and evens that tally of loses !!! shocking statistics for IC
18 races and 8 wins for imperial commander finishing 2nd once and 3rd once ( says it all for me 8 times outside the top 3 !!!! not in the same league as these two once were !!
doesnt matter how good kauto star is... you aint gonna make much money backin it.. its always goin' off at 7 to 4 on.. its not my kind of horse.. racing was better when it was more competitive in the hardy eustace kicking king war of attrition era..
last years king george was nothing.. imperial commander is useless right handed.. the others were average handicappers.. long gone are the days of genuine top class competitive races im afraid
@neiller30 mikael d'haugenhaut is a nice each way bet for the rsa but what a friend was very disappointing in his last run so I would say it's unlikely he will run in the gold cup :( but I think sizing europe is worth some each way money because he was only 6 lengths behind kauto at Down Royal :) hurricane fly for champion hurdle :D

i think imperial commander was the most impressive of the big three in their races so far this season even if kauto wins the king george again i dont believe he can ever be as good as desert orchid who won big handicaps although he wasnt as good going left handed, as for arkle anyone who even mentions any of these in the same breath as himself should hang their heads in shame they had to do a different handicap when he ran thats how good he was !!!!!

What a Friend wont win a Tea-Cup, nevermind a Gold Cup. Its between Kauto and Imperial Commander, nothing else coming through, although I'm dying to see Sizing Europe stepped up again to the 3 and a quarter mile trip at Cheltenham, could see even more improvement.
Am putting my Anti Post bet down before they set off at Down Royal, i still think Imperial commander is a great bet in the King George, best price 10/1 the magic sign.

Hang on Long Run did get beat after i said that but its come out and won recently, another classic example of race fixing just look at binocular in the champion hurdle jumped like an absolute pig all season then it came out with no chance and pissed over all the tops horses
I have followed IC from day one and won a fortune when he won the Ryanair in 2009, i stuck with him again in the 2009 King George but his race was over when he hit the 2nd fence, however he did make up alot of ground in the King George and cannot be ruled out this year 2010.
When he won the Gold cup it was at that time my biggest pay day, only time will tell if he's come on again and i will stay loyal with his future races, ''BUT'' i do now fear - WHAT A FREIND
He hit the 2nd fence fella, and bad, they can all make mistakes, IC is a very good bet for this year's KG on boxing day, a very good bet, but as you know, we pay our money and we take our chance, best of luck.
I think Imperial Commander is at least a stone better there than anywhere, but my abiding memory from that race was the demise of 2 of the All-Time Greats. Kautos jumping getting found out, and the Machine Denman, just not having the legs for it anymore. IC quickened like a proper animal though, shades of the Immortal Best Mates 2nd Gold Cup.
Much in the way that Dessie was a Kempton specialist i think IC is a tough nut to crack around Cheltenham, he has proved that the last 3 seasons he is at least 8lbs better round cheltenham than he is round any other course.
Racehorses are genrally just starting to slide by 10yrs old Vix. Kauto is also french bred and they have a history of peaking much sooner aswell. Dessie won it at 10yrs, but if there was an 8yr old Denman, a 7-9 yr old Kauto or a 9yr IC in the field he may not have. KS has been racing since he was 3 yrs old and therefore entitled to be on the slide by 10. He owes nothing to me and has paid for Xmas for 3 years running. Betffair played up last year. Kauto is the star but on this day IC was great!
Aww man I wish Denman had won this, my all time favourite horse. Kauto is a star but I think when they are both at their peak Denman would just have the edge over Kauto. I hope they both come back to their best in 2011 :)
to be honest this was a fall just waiting to happen. in the past k.s has got away with it too many times.a great all round versatile horse ...yes. but also a flashy jumper.
As glad as i was to see Kauto ridden back by Ruby, i do kinda agree with vixitrixalina - every precaution should've been taken. I'm just glad he got back to the stables okay. But i can't agree with your certainty that Kauto would've won without his early mistake. There is no way anyone can be sure of that. Speculation is just that - there is no certainty.
10 year olds dont win the cheltenham gold cup even mif Kauto star hadnt fallen it would never have be\aten imperial commander the last 2 furlongs showed
@Paxrep Exactly! Just because the race is dominated by 7-9 year-olds, it doesn't mean that an older horse is 'definately' going to lose. You never know, and that's one of the things I love about racing.
@templarknight94 i agree! thing is, 10 is very young for a horse. i do dressage on an 11 year old, and he's pretty much a baby! 10 years old for a horse is not "old". race horses are insanely young - a 2 year old is equivelent of an 8-10 year old child. horses really shouldn't be ridden before they are 4 years old as their joints haven't locked together and they have weak muscles and ligaments. a 10 year old horse in this race SHOULD be better of than a 7 year old!
also just wanted to add - no it wasn't "a great sight" watching kauto cantering home under Ruby! that horse suffered a rotational fall before rolling on landing and was lucky to be alive. in the eventing world rotational falls are often killers when just trotting or cantering, whereas Kauto was at a gallop. he should have been slowly walked back inhand so that he could catch his breath and relax his muscles and allow his heart to slow down. he could have underlying back and neck injuries.
@vixitrixalina Absolutely agree with you 100%. Remounting after a fall should have banned years ago. Kauto Star took a real "purler" that day. He'll never be as lucky again.

obviously i'd rather see him canter back that dead on the track - everyone would! but it's like, say you're hit by a car traveling at 30mph - thats a pretty similar impact. you don't just jump up and carry on, you could be injured. there seemed to be a lack of precautions. Nicholls said Kauto's neck was pretty sore the next few days which was very lucky, that kinda fall usualy breaks a horses neck or back.
Kauto Star was actually travelling and jumping superbly untill his mistake. i think he was travelling best - he was up with the pace and light on his feet. its hard to see what happened at that fence, as it was uphill perhaps he put in a short stride and didn't have enough impulsion to get high enough and hit the top? he seemed to hit the ground with his nose - Ruby was on the buckle of the reins. Kauto lose a bit of courage then. without that mistake i am certain he would have won though.
Denman is one of my all time favourites and ran a great race. Kauto is, and will always be, a superstar. But credit to Imperial Commander. Gotta love Cheltenham

he has won the GC twice - he has nothing to prove there now. we KNOW he can win it but we also know he doesn't like it. i hope he runs again next year, all being well and good of course, to have another crack but i expect nothing more of him. i can't wait for the King George though - he LOVES that place! he won't ever be beaten there - i think he could win there in 2011 too :)

IC was brilliant this day but you have to worry about him out so soon on a flat track, ive never backed him before so i wont be backing him at evens, evens could look enormous if he wins but ill maybe take a chance on what a friend whos a bit of a monkey in a finish but i can see him coming there travelling well, he goes well fresh and the track should really suit him, on a line through denman IC should be a jailcase but he just hasnt showed his best away from cheltenham
Had Imperial Commander in this and thought he rode a blinder. Kauto is one of the best ever to jump at the cheltneham fences or any fences tho i thought he looked really tired and average in this race, he didnt look himself, bt he will b back u cnt keep nt gd horse but a BRILLIANT horse down adn Denman is one of the most overraed horses ever.

Of course, I would've been glad if either Kauto Star or Denman had won the race, but the result was just the same as I had expected --- neither of them would win the race since both of them have been becoming older and their status has been declining. This is an inevitable rule for all athletes --- no matter human or animals --- although we won't be happy to see their decline.

@JTazz44 only one denman mate. kauto star like the french are pansies, they run half a mile in the wrong direction at any site of hard work ahead! Cheltenham gc day pouring with rain wind, soft ground. a no brainer and good well denman would beat star aswelll, both in their peak denman all day long. Denman wins his races during not at end, by that time , kauto stars jumping would of been put under pressure, you may get within 5 lenghts on a good day. DENMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

denman is a legend, if he comes to ireland for the punchestown festival there will be the biggest crowd ever there. do ye think hel run there?, nd ruby to ride him, mc coy is a good jockey but he cant ride denman, i think he should hav gone for home alot earlier in the gold cup, lik the tank didi in 08. the tank= the greatest, ks= french wanker.
Good performance by IC.Thought N.Twiston-Davies went a bit overboard afterwards regards his comments toward KS.If that CHAMPION never wins another race it would be o.k,he owes no-one.Lest we forget KS beat Denman by 13L in '09,IC beat Denman by 7L in a time that was 4 seconds slower than Kauto's.NEARLY all the greats win the King George.IC's record of a purely Cheltenham horse for me doesn't put him in that category(yet).
What a race, Kauto's fall was nasty & frightening to watch but thank goodness he & Ruby Walsh were fine. And I made a fair profit of £26 from this race by getting the 1-2-3, nice.
Kauto Star was travelling and jumping very well before he made that terrible mistake on the first circuit. After that he was always up against it, a mistake like that is very difficult to recover from. Glad he got up ok from that crashing fall. Denman ran a great race but Imperial Commander was always travelling that little bit better. His record around Cheltenham is fantastic and it will be interesting to see if he can reproduce this form next season.
Had 20 on imp commander and 5.00 rev forecast on denaman and imperial commander. As soon as it started pouring it down you just knew the ground would be too heavy for kauto. Still a brilliant horse!!!

Bit your right its going to be a mamouth task, but after the hennessy the class is still there, a place is a minimum, but i think there is one more demolition in the tank from the TANK!

Denman probaly will not win no 11 year old has won since mandarin 1962 , 34 of the last 40 winners were age 7,8,9 other six winners were age 10, this is because horses lose pace obviously older they get, Arkle won gold cup age 7,8,9 Best mate 7,8,9 Kauto could be an exception though 8/1 each way is super price, what a friend has most scope for improvement on last year worth each way punt

havent really watched this race much TBH.
however credit to imperial commander, he was the only one who could go with denman when he turned the screw and then was too good for the big horse over the last 2 fences.
kauto stars early error meant he was playing catch up. the pace was strong and ruby had to ask kauto for some big leaps. both factors evntually culminated in kauto falling. but it was relief to see the horse was ok- it was probs the best result of the race

in my eyes and look at yourselves at this .. before kauto stars last run what would you say was the best horse over this distance and u cannot back against it going on form .. 4 king gorges and 2 gold cups an unbelievable horse and at 8/1 or more i got 10's for it u cant possible not have a tinkle on him u will never ever see that price on that horse get it whilst u can!

agreed. Imperial hasnt done enough to come close to a 185 rating. certainly hasnt run to that in my opinion. 8 wins out of 18 i just cant get that out of my head ffs kautos ran 36 races and evens that tally of loses !!! shocking statistics for IC

doesnt matter how good kauto star is... you aint gonna make much money backin it.. its always goin' off at 7 to 4 on.. its not my kind of horse.. racing was better when it was more competitive in the hardy eustace kicking king war of attrition era..
last years king george was nothing.. imperial commander is useless right handed.. the others were average handicappers.. long gone are the days of genuine top class competitive races im afraid

I forgot...DESSIE is grey, which means he is a crowd favourite. Dessie is great but i think Kauto has his number.

@neiller30 mikael d'haugenhaut is a nice each way bet for the rsa but what a friend was very disappointing in his last run so I would say it's unlikely he will run in the gold cup :( but I think sizing europe is worth some each way money because he was only 6 lengths behind kauto at Down Royal :) hurricane fly for champion hurdle :D

i think imperial commander was the most impressive of the big three in their races so far this season even if kauto wins the king george again i dont believe he can ever be as good as desert orchid who won big handicaps although he wasnt as good going left handed, as for arkle anyone who even mentions any of these in the same breath as himself should hang their heads in shame they had to do a different handicap when he ran thats how good he was !!!!!

What a Friend wont win a Tea-Cup, nevermind a Gold Cup. Its between Kauto and Imperial Commander, nothing else coming through, although I'm dying to see Sizing Europe stepped up again to the 3 and a quarter mile trip at Cheltenham, could see even more improvement.

Hang on Long Run did get beat after i said that but its come out and won recently, another classic example of race fixing just look at binocular in the champion hurdle jumped like an absolute pig all season then it came out with no chance and pissed over all the tops horses

I have followed IC from day one and won a fortune when he won the Ryanair in 2009, i stuck with him again in the 2009 King George but his race was over when he hit the 2nd fence, however he did make up alot of ground in the King George and cannot be ruled out this year 2010.
When he won the Gold cup it was at that time my biggest pay day, only time will tell if he's come on again and i will stay loyal with his future races, ''BUT'' i do now fear - WHAT A FREIND

I think Imperial Commander is at least a stone better there than anywhere, but my abiding memory from that race was the demise of 2 of the All-Time Greats. Kautos jumping getting found out, and the Machine Denman, just not having the legs for it anymore. IC quickened like a proper animal though, shades of the Immortal Best Mates 2nd Gold Cup.

Much in the way that Dessie was a Kempton specialist i think IC is a tough nut to crack around Cheltenham, he has proved that the last 3 seasons he is at least 8lbs better round cheltenham than he is round any other course.

Racehorses are genrally just starting to slide by 10yrs old Vix. Kauto is also french bred and they have a history of peaking much sooner aswell. Dessie won it at 10yrs, but if there was an 8yr old Denman, a 7-9 yr old Kauto or a 9yr IC in the field he may not have. KS has been racing since he was 3 yrs old and therefore entitled to be on the slide by 10. He owes nothing to me and has paid for Xmas for 3 years running. Betffair played up last year. Kauto is the star but on this day IC was great!

Aww man I wish Denman had won this, my all time favourite horse. Kauto is a star but I think when they are both at their peak Denman would just have the edge over Kauto. I hope they both come back to their best in 2011 :)

As glad as i was to see Kauto ridden back by Ruby, i do kinda agree with vixitrixalina - every precaution should've been taken. I'm just glad he got back to the stables okay. But i can't agree with your certainty that Kauto would've won without his early mistake. There is no way anyone can be sure of that. Speculation is just that - there is no certainty.

@Paxrep Exactly! Just because the race is dominated by 7-9 year-olds, it doesn't mean that an older horse is 'definately' going to lose. You never know, and that's one of the things I love about racing.

@templarknight94 i agree! thing is, 10 is very young for a horse. i do dressage on an 11 year old, and he's pretty much a baby! 10 years old for a horse is not "old". race horses are insanely young - a 2 year old is equivelent of an 8-10 year old child. horses really shouldn't be ridden before they are 4 years old as their joints haven't locked together and they have weak muscles and ligaments. a 10 year old horse in this race SHOULD be better of than a 7 year old!

also just wanted to add - no it wasn't "a great sight" watching kauto cantering home under Ruby! that horse suffered a rotational fall before rolling on landing and was lucky to be alive. in the eventing world rotational falls are often killers when just trotting or cantering, whereas Kauto was at a gallop. he should have been slowly walked back inhand so that he could catch his breath and relax his muscles and allow his heart to slow down. he could have underlying back and neck injuries.

obviously i'd rather see him canter back that dead on the track - everyone would! but it's like, say you're hit by a car traveling at 30mph - thats a pretty similar impact. you don't just jump up and carry on, you could be injured. there seemed to be a lack of precautions. Nicholls said Kauto's neck was pretty sore the next few days which was very lucky, that kinda fall usualy breaks a horses neck or back.

Kauto Star was actually travelling and jumping superbly untill his mistake. i think he was travelling best - he was up with the pace and light on his feet. its hard to see what happened at that fence, as it was uphill perhaps he put in a short stride and didn't have enough impulsion to get high enough and hit the top? he seemed to hit the ground with his nose - Ruby was on the buckle of the reins. Kauto lose a bit of courage then. without that mistake i am certain he would have won though.

he has won the GC twice - he has nothing to prove there now. we KNOW he can win it but we also know he doesn't like it. i hope he runs again next year, all being well and good of course, to have another crack but i expect nothing more of him. i can't wait for the King George though - he LOVES that place! he won't ever be beaten there - i think he could win there in 2011 too :)

IC was brilliant this day but you have to worry about him out so soon on a flat track, ive never backed him before so i wont be backing him at evens, evens could look enormous if he wins but ill maybe take a chance on what a friend whos a bit of a monkey in a finish but i can see him coming there travelling well, he goes well fresh and the track should really suit him, on a line through denman IC should be a jailcase but he just hasnt showed his best away from cheltenham

Had Imperial Commander in this and thought he rode a blinder. Kauto is one of the best ever to jump at the cheltneham fences or any fences tho i thought he looked really tired and average in this race, he didnt look himself, bt he will b back u cnt keep nt gd horse but a BRILLIANT horse down adn Denman is one of the most overraed horses ever.

Of course, I would've been glad if either Kauto Star or Denman had won the race, but the result was just the same as I had expected --- neither of them would win the race since both of them have been becoming older and their status has been declining. This is an inevitable rule for all athletes --- no matter human or animals --- although we won't be happy to see their decline.

Cheltenham gc day pouring with rain wind, soft ground. a no brainer and good well denman would beat star aswelll, both in their peak denman all day long. Denman wins his races during not at end, by that time , kauto stars jumping would of been put under pressure, you may get within 5 lenghts on a good day. DENMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Good performance by IC.Thought N.Twiston-Davies went a bit overboard afterwards regards his comments toward KS.If that CHAMPION never wins another race it would be o.k,he owes no-one.Lest we forget KS beat Denman by 13L in '09,IC beat Denman by 7L in a time that was 4 seconds slower than Kauto's.NEARLY all the greats win the King George.IC's record of a purely Cheltenham horse for me doesn't put him in that category(yet).

What a race, Kauto's fall was nasty & frightening to watch but thank goodness he & Ruby Walsh were fine. And I made a fair profit of £26 from this race by getting the 1-2-3, nice.

Kauto Star was travelling and jumping very well before he made that terrible mistake on the first circuit. After that he was always up against it, a mistake like that is very difficult to recover from. Glad he got up ok from that crashing fall. Denman ran a great race but Imperial Commander was always travelling that little bit better. His record around Cheltenham is fantastic and it will be interesting to see if he can reproduce this form next season.

Had 20 on imp commander and 5.00 rev forecast on denaman and imperial commander. As soon as it started pouring it down you just knew the ground would be too heavy for kauto. Still a brilliant horse!!!
