I can kind of see where he is coming from, Hosea 6:6 tells us that God does not demand sacrifices. Looking at it that way, you could say that Jesus came to preach the truth, his death shows how opposed the world is to the ways of God, and his Resurrection shows him overcoming the ways of the world, showing that victory is in God alone and not in the ways of the world, even if it looks like we're losing. Christ's death on the cross made it look like he lost, but then we see that God never fails.
It's not a good sign when we allow our personal feelings to determine what is biblical, right, or of God. What happens is there is a deviation from the truth. This is what is occurring in this video. Bart's god is not a god of justice. God poured his wrath on his son, so that we can be saved. Jesus had to die and that is the Gospel.
Anyone that has . . . seen God . . . will breakout of the chains of Judaism. Judaism has mislead a lot of people into thinking horrible things about God. God is not a righteous judge . . . Jesus proves this . . . when the woman caught in adultery is before Jesus . . . he spoke I condemn you not.
@enotstehw That story was added by later Christians. It is absent from the earliest known copies of the gospels.
A saying from Jesus that wasn't added was, "Do not think that I come to abolish the law, but to fulfill." Jesus was a Jew. He lived by the Jewish law. He admonished strongly against breaking Jewish law. The purpose of his coming, by his own words, was to fulfill the law of sacrifice.
Taken by itself, this perspective would be considered heresy. The Biblical teaching is that God is both a righteous judge, Who cannot merely "overlook sin" but Who demands an accounting, as well as a loving Father, Who is eager to reconcile with us. The justice of God demands an accounting, for God does not presume to forgive the just recompense we are owed for the sins committed against us. See Bart's video on "A Loving Contempt" to understand these tensions better. In Jesus, mercy prevails
This is false. Sadly, this man is deceived about what he is saying. He does not know God and/or cannot handle the truth about Him, so he is making up a god of his own liking. Jesus was very clear about why he came, about why the Father sent him. Do not be fooled by this man.
Matthew recounts what Jesus did and said on the night before He was to die...
26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Surely Jesus believed that his death was payment for our sin debt.

Watch the entire video. And maybe watch other Bart Campolo videos, before making judgement. So many of these comments below are so judgemental, and ignorant, because you dont get the full message by this two minute clip.
He's partially correct. Although Jesus was the only one not deserving of death & everyone else is deserving of death, he committed the ultimate act of "love". He willingly gave his life in place of the guilty. In short, Jesus was born to die! Indeed, he came to love!
I am sooo tired of people thinking that Jesus dying for our sins is some great gift. Anyone in their right minds would die for humanity. it is not a big deal. I agree with bart. God is different for everyone, and using the cookie cutter god from the bible is lazy and ignorant. Remember ppl, the bible is just made up of metaphors to help guide us. If there was a Jesus, he was only a teacher, and his death was used to spread his word even further.
This is not only disturbing but also upsetting. And it is biblically incorrect. Bart has created his own god as he thinks god should be, not as the Bible reveals Him. I agree with those who call these statements heretical. Very sad indeed.
Heresy = thinking critically??? I have the same questions about the Christian faith, and I was brought up in it since I was born into an Irish Catholic family. It doesn't make sense. God is Love - he can't just turn that off. He gave us free will knowing full well we were going to screw it all up; and we say that he judges us for it? The God who put the Tree of Knowledge in the middle of the garden clearly didn't know us very well if he didn't want us taking a bite out of the apple.
I've noticed you have no scriptural backing at all when you speak in these cute little videos. It's all about what YOU think or what YOU don't think, or YOUR little anecdotes... blah blah blah. What does the Bible say, Mr. Campolo?
John 12:27"Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name!" - Jesus speaking of his impending death. Jesus came to die for our sins. Read your Bible. Do not listen to what men like Bart Campolo say. Repent and trust the Savior!
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.
Colossians 2:8
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.-Eph 5:6.
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling [words], having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.-Jude 1:16
Alarms going off again with "most evangelicals..." and again with "I think..." and "I think Jesus..." & "I think...." & "your God must really suck if he can't get around killing somebody." And the icing on the cake: "it just doesn't make sense to me."
So he has made up a god in his own mind that makes sense to him.
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Ahahaha! There are so many things wrong with this video I don't even know where to start. God can't "just forgive sins." A judge who pardons law-breakers isnt a righteous judge.
@davidlgs A lawgiver who creates lawbreakers only to punish them is sadistic and unworthy of worship.
Here's the key. I'm pretty sure your interpretation is consistent with the bible. Jesus came to fulfill the sacrificial law in order to atone for original sin.
That is one reason, among many, that I think if the Christian God exists, he is evil.
@davidlgs the punishment for sin is death... those who repent and eventually recieve the spirit that raised him from the dead, at his second coming we will be risen to... Grace...forgiveness.
@davidlgs I might be wrong on some of this, you'd have to back check it yourself. Justice and judgement are attributes of God. There is only one account in the Bible where God is explained as a noun and that is that God is love. 1 John 4:8. Everything else that is used to explain God in the Bible is an adjective. If I am merciful and just then sometimes I will show mercy, but sometimes I will enact justice.
@davidlgs But if "I am" mercy, then I can never be punishing. God "is" love so everything God does stems from love. Jesus died on the cross to restore our relationship to the Father that was lost and forgiveness of sins was a necessary step. But that stemmed from love. So I believe he's right, but also a little off because I believe that dying was still necessary.
