In the Japanese version, the Chinese characters spoke broken Japanese, as they were meant to sound foreign. In this English version, they're following the same principle and reminding us that the Chinese characters are foreign (as they would sound to a Japanese person).

Nope. It isn't true. In the Chinese (Mandarin) dub, both the Japanese AND the Chinese characters can speak fluent Mandarin. It doesn't make sense if the Japanese can speak Mandarin fluently and the Chinese cannot. Likewise in the english dub.

@thesiaoz - You miss the point. A dubbed version is only for the benefit of that language's speakers - we're still supposed to be hearing 'Japanese' being spoken.

Kind of like how in the film 'The Hunt for Red October' they are speaking Russian at first and then Sean Connery switches to English mid-sentence and continues in English for the rest of the film. They aren't meant to be speaking English literally, it's just so that English speakers can understand what they're supposed to be saying.

Personally, I normally avoid dubbed versions of anything - I prefer to listen to the original and watch subtitles. Dubbed versions often cut things out or fuck voices up.

Ionno, I usually prefer japanese audio, english sub, but for ranma I prefer english dub. Ranma is supposed to be 16, and that's what the english dub ranma sounds like. I feel like the voices are more unique with english dub, and funnier too.
