  • GREAT !! =) thanX

  • can someone explain downshifting in detail to me cause I've heard you need to rev match and other fancy crap like that and not one of these videos give a simple easy to follow explanation on how to downshift if someone could explain that would be helpful

  • @InsideTheWall41 you don't need to rev match or heel and toe when downshifting, it just feels more jerky when you don't

  • When starting out in 1st gear do you clutch half way to engagement point then apply gas, or apply gas, release the clutch to engagement point then slowly release after 10mph?

  • Nice music tastes! The video was exceptionally helpfull since I am actually about to get a 2000 accord EX 5spd, so it shows me how the car actually moves and reacts. Thanks! Best instructional video I've seen yet.

  • This is a great instructional vid, except for what you were saying about coming completely off the clutch before starting to apply gas. If you do this method, unless your rpms drop really slow or you are very quick off the clutch, it will never be a smooth gear change. The proper way to shift is to let off until grabbing point, then to start applying gas proportional to the amount needed to be at the correct rpms in the next gear. If done correctly this provides the smoothest gear change.

  • Aw, you think you're cool pulling off that e-brake stop at 5:45! XD Just kidding! Anyway, very great instructional videos on how to drive a manual transmission car; I find these instructionals from guys like you and TheDerekMoore really useful, since I am working toward getting my driver's license, getting a job and getting an MT-equipped car within the next 18-30 months.

  • please please please please let my school let me pick my own project for a video so i can do something like this!!

    good job bud :)

  • hhmm... wat about the mitubishi eclipse year 2000 or 2001? wat RPM or MPH shud i change gears then?

  • @GuitarGuyBLAH Is it Diesel-powered? If so, 2000 RPM is the time to shift up. (I don't know about shifting down, as it requires feeling). In the case of Gasoline, 2500 is more up your ally.

  • @GuitarGuyBLAH go by your ear, say it idles at like 750 rpm's, you should shift up in casual road use at about 2500-3500 rpm's. remember, the lower the rpm's the less sensitive the gas is, and the less power.

  • @GuitarGuyBLAH Hey I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse 5 speed too... What suggestions do you give me to drive it??? It's my first car as well as my first time driving stick shift

  • what if ur on the highway COASTING, and the rpm's are low because ur COASTING and the person in front brakes and then u brake, wont u stall the car?????

  • @sergsrt8 unless you're car has crazy gear ratios, you'll probably still be in the 3-4,000 rpm range on the highway in your highest gear (assuming about 65 mph that is). if you're just slowing down there should be no issue; however an emergency situation where you're slamming the brakes to cut speed dramatically or even stop will most likely require you to downshift, or to at least press the clutch in... keep in mind too that when i say "dramatically" i mean down to somewhere under 20 mph-ish

  • @BelleM44 ok thanks, what if you are going down a bridge with no one in front and u hit the brake lightly for about a miniute because ur going downhill, you dont want to speed up, What do u do?

  • @sergsrt8 go to a lower gear if necessary, this is what i go by: if im 30mph or above, id usually go to 4th and if im around 45 5th gear is good (this is good for gas mileage using the higher gear, as well as it is a highway gear to calm the engine down some on the RPM's) if i am around 25 then 3rd gear is good and if i am around 15 to as low as 7 then ill go to second, anything lower ill use first.

  • this video was much betta then most i have seen

  • Hi Mike, Looking in the video notes you said this was for English 202C. Funny, I had my Technical Writing course at Penn State that had that numbering scheme. I recently purchased a car with manual transmission and learning the techniques. Kudos to the video. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

  • Everybody does it wrong, You're supposed to release the clutch BEFORE getting on the throttle, You don't need 2.5k RPM to get a car rolling from a stop, 800-1000 is enough torque. Cool video otherwise.

  • @l337Jeff I agree with you in some ways, especially about the 2.5k RPM, but I exaggerated a lot of things in the video for the sake of making it easier on those new to driving stick... I know when I was first learning it helped me at first to give it a little extra gas to get the car moving so you don't stall. Thanks for the comments though

  • @l337Jeff agree with you competely, works perfectly on every manual car i have driven as well as my car, there are just so many ways to teach people how to drive manual, but not all are the most correct. Also, with 2500 RPM its just burning up the clutch and lessening the life of the clutch costing you money.

  • thanks

  • great video.

  • when shifting, if u want a smoother shift, select the gear and give the car gas while releasing the clutch at the same time.

  • @AboutYourMac i dont see the reason to do that, it just uses your clutch up more, i just release the clutch slowly and get a perfectly smooth shift every time, but whatever works for you.

  • hey man thanx alot, this video realy helped me out. i bought myself a standard sunfire gt and couldnt seem to get the first gear right but after paying attenchon to ur vid and useing other vids of others i watched i realized how much of an idiot i was for not understanding how to drive one. im now cruising around in my sweet car lookin good. thanx man
