@askayscha probably means the motherfucker screams like a raging demon from hell - that song is a bad little diddley and demonic fits the sound profile in my eyes
Simply put, if the band themselves aren't 100% proud of the album as they were with SNW, it's not the best album, nor the best the Deftones have done. Diamond Eye's does indeed rip the pants off this CD. Don't get me wrong, SNW had some nice tracks, this song inlcuded. But it took them way too long..as they said, and they weren't in a good head space. Self-titles was and still is my favourite Album of theirs, but Diamond Eyes does stand out as a return to Deftones glory days.
you guys that love SNW...good for you!!!it was barely made and they all hated eachother in the process...not to mention they were never in the studio together.
@mettalx1 Better than Diamond Eyes? Are you serious? Diamond Eyes is an absolute masterpiece rivalling any of the band's earlier albums. I actually consider Saturday Night Wrist a low point in Deftones' catalogue - if there is one - and Diamond Eyes is a true return to form.
@GrandMasterScotty while my personal favourite will always be 1. "around the fur" and 2. "adrenaline", I think that the ONLY oldschool thing about diamond eyes is Stephen Carpenter. Thus this is only my opinion, I found it disappointing how Chino didn't use almost any vaierity in his vocals on the album. Almost every song sound the same from the singing part, and was aslo kinda disappointed that most songs are mild. I understand that their going for a diffrent apporach, but that i not oldschool.
@mettalx1 Why does it need to be 'oldschool'? Both Adrenaline and Around the Fur were amazing albums, but the band's sound has evolved, and this has kept it fresh and retained interest. A band that releases the same album again and again quickly becomes tedious.
Furthermore, I don't know how you can say Chino's vocals on DE lacked variety. They're probably some of his most diverse vocals to date and certainly some of his strongest, especially in some of the melodic tracks.
@GrandMasterScotty hmm, maybe I missunderstood the apporach of people on the album... I always see that people call this 'oldchool', witch really annoys me. I don't think it SHOULD sound oldschool, especially since Carpenter said that Deftones IS about vaierity in music and sound, but when I always come to listen to a song on youtube off the album I always see some ignorant folks talking about the return of the old sound. Even though I was dissapointed about this album, I keep hopes for Eros.
@mettalx1 I don't want to sound as if I'm calling your opinion invalid, but what was it about Diamond Eyes that you found 'dissapointing'? It was beautiful from beginning to end. At its heaviest it was heavier than Deftones have ever been, and at its softist it contained their best melodic work ever, exemplified by Beauty School and Sextape. Honestly, I think it runs laps around Saturday Night Wrist and self-titled, and it rivals any of their earlier work. Give it a few more listens.
@GrandMasterScotty SNW was a good album, but it was weak for the Deftones. They slowed down a lil on the self titled, then even more on SNW. Diamond Eyes is NOT a return to form, if by " form " you mean Adrenaline, Around the Fur, etc., BUT it is the best they've done since White Pony IMO. Regardless, the Deftones were, are, and shall remain incredible. They are definitely in my top 5 of all time.
@vullgar When I said 'return to form' I didn't necessarily mean that they had returned to the style and sound of the first two albums, and I certainly don't think they should have. Adrenaline was a great album, but it has nowhere near the musical sophistication of some of their later work, including Diamond Eyes. I personally think Diamond Eyes is one of their best albums, rivalling White Pony or Around the Fur, and one of the reasons for this is that it isn't just a rehash of earlier work.
@GrandMasterScotty I completely disagree with pretty much everything you just said. I think the melodic aspects of DE are incredibly good, but not their best by any means. And DE did not rival White Pony, Around the Fur, or Adrenaline in any way, that's just a fact. And a rehash of old work? None of their albums were a " rehash of old work " so idk what point you are trying to make with that.
@vullgar I still maintain that DE is one of Deftones' tightest and best-written albums to date, and that its melodic components are also some of their best. In my opinion, it certainly rivals their early work.
As for my comment that DE isn't a rehash of old work, I agree that none of their albums has been a rehash - in fact, one of the best things about Deftones is that they have consistently evolved their sound. This is a good thing, as some other bands release the same album six times.
beautiful. first time hearing this album, I skip this and listen to the last one diamond eyes lol.. got all the previous know them by heart. they never let me down.. they're coming today at a free concert here in Lisbon.. I do have the tickets I'm not sure I'm gonna make it it should be crazy there cause of the stocking plus it's for free so I don't know and it's raining baaad lol :(

Holy shit, I was working while listening to this song. And when he started screaming suddenly, I got some major goosebumps all over. lol, I fucking love that feeling.
@conjurer0 yeah, exactly. I like that too. Deftones are great, beautiful music ranging across the emotional spectrum...it's never satanic though (I guess some think so because Chino screams a lot?)
@91nickt Yeah. Alot of people think they're demonic because've that, that's why alot of people don't like Whitechapel, because they scream all the time. It puts people off, tagging has ruined alot of good music.
dude ever since i heard this song ive been looking for a word to describe it but no adjective i could come up with was even close... but demonic... shit this song has demonic written all over it. good one
It's cause they havn't had any really mainstream songs or anything besides Change and Back To School and even then ppl were kinda "meh" about them. If they made more songs like Back to School they might popular but that's not their style which is cool. But after WP, everbody went to emo and crap "gangsta" rap. that's just how I see it.
When you say everybody, you're talking about the fans and not the band right, cause their album SNW was far from emo and rap. In fact, becasue of that album I'm surprised that they haven't gotten more credited acclaim for their music...it's just a shame.
its kind of good that they didnt get more credited acclaim because then record labels would want to have more say in their music so it could sell to the public better and theyd either turn into another stupid generic rock band or break up. thats my opinion anyway
That was a pretty much perfect statement. And Snw to me is a metaphor for falling asleep on that whole album. I think they were just fucking bored as shit and I feel it. Honestly I just don't think im a fan of Bob Ezrins producing with deftones at least. This is prob my favorite song on the album but the guitars just don't hit me right even though I love what stef is doing the entire time as well as the rest of the band.
What, the whole deal w/ SNW is that they were so pissed at each other that they didn't even record the album in the studio 2gether. The Deftones tell u when they put out a mosly crappy album if you look. White Pony=we're 2 strung out, SNW is just jackin off, I don't care what Chino initialy told the public it meant (falling asleep on your arm after a party and when u wake up its numb).
maybe it's because you're younger than i am, but they were more popular before white pony. a lot of people were into 'em. they were the shit when i was in highschool.
