J is the only guitar player that can squeeze anguish, pain, frustration, beauty and grief out of an electric guitar without being a blues picker. I've always loved this band, cause they weren't afraid to be a rock band. Unlike a lot of anemic British bands...
yeah in 1994 I went to see them in amsterdam ,and i tell the bass player :you could at least pull a smile sometimes, he looked so shifted, and he just did this amazing grin to me,what a amazing souvenir, I was 16.
Man that is just so good. There is some damn good music coming out right now if you look for it... But nothin like this. Just freaking totally kickass.
this was most likely before cobains death cause Mtv is gay like that but regardless Dinosaur jr. is the shit and this song is fuckin great, one of my favorites.
it's looks like J's & Co. are playing to the absolute void..something like a post-apocalpytic scenario where J is attempting to conjure back existence with the sheer primordial force of his solo!
Im guessing J likes cows...official dinosaur jr tshirts have a cow logo on them, there are cows in the video for 'Whatever's Cool With Me' and here he is wearing a blazer with the inner lining apparentley a fresian cow print design. Just an observation lol
hair covering his face.. just love jay. he's brilliant pure n simple. he could care less about image as long as his music stands the test of time and it does by a long shot! go mascus!!!!!!!!!!
j's guitar playing ability and song writing abilities are so fuckin sick tht he may subconciously be smarter then he thinks...idk...i hope someone understands, jam on
Thank you for the compliment :) I don't know about current bands though, I mainly just listen to stuff from the 60s/70s/80/90s haha. Though this modern band Piano Magic are pretty great...
Juliana Hatfield did a great cover version of this one! By the way, check out my videos - Dinosaur Jr Live in Sweden 2005. Mascis totally beats the livin' crap out of Yngwie Malmsteen.
classic stuff, does anyone remember that they also performed 'Budge' in same session, have it on vhs, have to convert it, anyone have it posted digitally???fergal, carlow
I was lucky enough to see them at Mr. Small's Theatre in Pittsburgh with a few other exceptionally excellent bands. The greatest show I've ever been to. I stood 5 feet away J's 3 Marshall full stacks. I couldn't hear for two days, and when I came into school the next day, I couldn't even reply to my teachers because the ring in my ear was so loud that everything was pretty much inaudible.
You're very lucky. I saw them at The Forum last year but something wasn't quite right. Don't get me wrong, it was good but you could tell that there was still friction between the group. If there was a time machine i'd set it to 1993 so i could grow my hair long and wear flannel shirts again. God, I love grunge.
This Mascis dude is a madman, an utter nutter! I really like his songs, but his attitude towards live performances is reckless and "fuken" unbearable with all this "make their ears bleed" attitude! There is a thing called tinnitus and it can fuck up your life pretty badly. The songs dont gain either when everything just distorts in your ears. Fucking moron... I wonder, after over 20 years he must be completely deaf by now.
The thing is he wouldn't be able to have such musical liquidy sounding guitar saturation if he weren't running a shitload of Marshalls (heads, not cabinets) together at high volumes. Hendrix knew dis too.
Well Lou Barlow once said that J didnt give a fuck about the audience and he would turn up the amps all the way. That was back in the day, i think it hasnt changed a bit hahahaha. J and the band have been using earplugs for the past 20 years so i wouldnt be too worried about them xD
Apparently it was because Murph used to chew said raisans, re-gurgitate, and then, for a finale, spit them out and finally model them into minature versions of Kiss. This was the sole reason Murph lost all of his hair - some said pact with the Devil for playing feedback enduced guitar pop, Beelzebub thought otherwise. Who said the Devil has all the best tunes?????? He obviously hates drummers.
Can someone please show me a bad song of theirs? They're so much better than the fucking Time so they must be gods.

The thing about them is that they played and sang about love in a way that made sense, and still does.

The thing about J. Mascis is that he sang about romance in a way that made sense at the time.
ChewYourGrouse 1 year ago 4
@ChewYourGrouse the lyrics to this song are beautiful poetry and the passion feel of the song really drives them home.
its a punk rock masterpiece! if one is permitted to say that. and why the fuck cant 'one' say that? its punk rock, 'one' can say whatever 'one wants.
PieceofMindmusic 1 year ago
Things that J. Mascis does while his hair is completely obscuring his face:
*practices at the firings range
*plays golf
*types his thesis on existentialism in popular music
*teaches maths to underpriveliged children
*makes love to... whoever
*SHREDS
