Leonid.... there weren't any basses like you in the west.... nor even now!!!! I am so sorry you weren't meant to sing opera beyond the alexandrov choiir. you are the greatest dear sir. I hope i meet you in person one day. Be well and blessed. Long live Russia!
I hope I can meet your father (and of course, Russian Red Army Choir) to say thank you for changing my life...
since I knew and love Russian song, I'm more optimist about there's other song which more better, meaningful, and have a great moral. You know, before I know about Russian Red Army Choir, I was so borring to hear the song that always about love and sadness in my country. (but that's not mean I hate all song. I'm still love my country's folk song, and critical about politic's song)
This is my favorite performance by Leonid Kharitonov. It actually made me cry one time. I'm a window cleaner and one day I was singing this song to myself while inside a customer's home and I had no idea the people who lived there were Russian. The grandmother at the house began singing along with me and when we finished the song she hugged me for almost a full minute. I believe this song has more significance today than it did when it was composed. Anyway, cheers and thank you Misha and Leonid.
Thank you for your comment! You told a very interesting and touchy story! I like this song myself very much too. I'm also very happy that you appreciated this video post so highly. Misha.
But when you stop and look at it, the lyrics (particularly the third/fourth verse) are quite terrifying! "We are taking the whole Earth under our personal care"? Good grief! That's a bit sinister! And they say neither side wanted the Cold War to go Hot...
@MrGrinningManiac Thank you for your comment! Well, I need to say that of course you have to keep in mind the period of time of that performance. Also by saying that the lyrics' author meant the "personal care" for securing of peace on Earth, which is a positive intention... Anyway, no one sings or performs this song nowadays...
I have been watching Leonid Kharitonov's performances for over a week now and I cannot stop. Of special interest to me is reading people's comments. Everyone seems to be deeply touched by the The Cliff, The Russian Boys, The Cossack Girl, the Volga Boatman, and some other songs performed by Leonid. I downloaded tracks available on the artist's website but I do not want to listen, I want to watch him every time. One must behold Kharitonov to appreciate one great phenomena that he is. DVD's?
@TheReedpipe I'd also recommend you to pay your attention to some other songs of the artist, such as "Not the Autumnal Fine Rain", "Black Raven", "The Storm was Raging", "Night Parade", "Long Ranged Guns Keep Silent" and some others...
Sure, I have them. But it's too long to fit the side box. But you can find them, if you follow the artist's official web site link which is below the English lyrics on the right, and go to Posts section there, then you'll easily find the Russian lyrics there.
Maestro Kharitonov shows himself to be a phenomenal singing actor who can change his voice and expression in the blink of an eye! Masculine, verile, electric and monumental but also tender and wistful as in 2:57 with seamless finesse and natural charm, Kharitonov is a show- man and an artist of exalted stature! The Ensemble is nimble, expressive and a fantastic complement to the soloist! CC keeps attention on the video not on the side texts...Thank you for the great post!
IMPORTANT! I have added English subtitles! Be sure to turn Captions (CC) on in your YouTube player to view the subtitles! It's the last right button on the player's tool bar.
The important thing about this video for me, is that it shows the rare example of the patriotic song popularity. What other patriotic song was sung an encore?!...
@ LHaritonov: Thank you so much for the subtitles. They show what a powerful message this song has, and what a great musical orator Kharitonov is. Bravo!
