The only other option that U.S. had was a costly ground invasion of Japan that would have lasted for several years. If those bombs hadn't been dropped many more soldiers would have died in the invasion. The Japanese would have fought to the death and to the last man. There were estimates of of anywhere from 200,000 to 1 million casualties for the land invasion of Japan.

@gedupawadat After the first bomb was dropped the Japanese still refused to surrender. They only surrendered after the second. If those bombs hadn't been dropped many more soldiers would have died in the invasion. The Japanese would have fought to the death and to the last man. There were estimates of of anywhere from 200,000 to 1 million casualties for the land invasion of Japan.
