  • leave it to lou to spell it out one of my favorite records

  • Such an unassuming masterpiece. Will love it forever.

  • @toopoable right about that his ability to write great lyrics is something

  • Ik groeide op in een smalle Wereld en ik weet dat ik er vanaf moet, Zarija Clabatti

  • Bum note at 1:21,Reed acknowledges it,lol.

  • @robert140602

You have a much more keenly tuned ear than I , my friend. (I don't doubt you're right in your observation.) I guess I get caught up in the overall percussiveness of Cale's playing, and don't ask for much more.

  • John Cale gaffe at 1.21

But I won't hold it against him, being the musical fucking genius that he is.

  • @ConnieLynchitz Well heard - sounds like a slip to me too - still like this brilliant song and album though. All the best. D. Gwalia

  • Where can I get the dvd of this?

This is my favourite,Cale's face cracks me up,lol.

  • Where can I get the dvd of this?

  • There's a little bit of MAGIC in everything...and some LOSS to even it out...

  • god, i love this song! coming from berlin tho =)

  • drella is a nick name for andy warhol - Dracula and Cinderella mixed together because he was a blood sucking princess. (aparently - according to andy warhols doco)

  • Dedicado a todos los lujanenses!

  • this really takes me back

  • Brilliant stuff.

Listen to the whole album if you can.

The body language and looks Reed / Cale exchange are priceless, but they both loved/admired Andy.

  • @DJkevvykev the facial exchanges are great aren't they! john is like, "i still hate your guts for sacking me from the velvets behind my back", and lou is just his usual arrogant self. don't get me wrong i love em both, but i prefer cale's solo music. lou's got better with age, however imo. anyway this whole album is a stone cold classic memoir to drella.

  • THe complete work is Great. .. and it is a 'tribute' to Andy

  • So true, a materpiece from the master.

  • in his live version (album "animal serenade", The Wiltern, LA..) Lou sings:

there's only one good thing about a small town:

    get the fuck outta here!

    (I fully agree..)

  • unique!

  • The live version is good, but I actually prefer the album version. The snotty and sarcastic vocal nuances on the album version make the song for me.

  • this song really spoke to me. reed and cale are legends.

  • If art is the tip of the iceberg I'm the part sinking below.

  • just great

  • "There's only one good thing about a small town, you know that you want to get out."

  • ha ha. I like this song, most of the songs on this album are all so sad (sad thought, not bad), but it's nice to have something a little light-hearted, cos Andy was fun too.

  • Great little diddy.

    Thanks Cale. Thanks Lou.

  • "When you're growing up in a small town

You know you'll grow down in a small town

There is only one good use for a small town

You hate it and you'll know you have to leave "

    I can't agree more...

  • this song is abouut Andy

  • "There's only one good use for a small town.. you hate it and you'll know you have to leave"

  • I like both artists, but talking only about their solo careers Cale is the man. Lou has a few really good albums, like New York, Ecstasy or Berlin, and all sound the same but Berlin. But Cale is one of the most versatile artists ever, from Paris 1919 to Honi Soit to Hobo Sapiens, you never know what's next.

  • I can remember the sleeve of the album which contains this song: It was covered with black velvet!

  • John Cale is truly the man. One of my favourite rock guys ever. Great songwriter, amazing viola player, distinctive piano player, just a genius. Never liked Lou Reed much, though.

  • Is it just me, or do they look like they already hate each other again?

  • its just you

  • I don't know what Reed thinks of Cale, but I know that Cale really, really hates Reed.

  • Reed hates Cale the same. The negativism isn´t really just from John´s side. Once John saved Lous life, don´t you know?

  • When I said "Never liked Lou Red much, though" I was actually talking about myself; I love John Cale and don't like Lou Reed. Yes, I've read Cale's autobiography and I know he hates Reed. I do too, especially after reading how Reed didn't bother to go to Sterling Morrison's funeral.

  • I know! Lou is an ignorant.

  • how did he save his life?

  • After their Velvet slip, they haven´t speak to each other: They met on some party, talk a little then Lou dissapear, John has a very hard day - I forget because of what - and find Lou in one room of the place of the party. He was cold, lying there in among the needles. John had called doctor.

  • That's just Lou. Ever hear the nasty interview he gave Terry Gross? I love him, but that was not justified.

  • :D EPIC SONG

  • Great!!!!!!!! Great voice! Lou is the best!

  • This Is My Theme

  • what respect deep heartedness andy was worthy of the artist more than money canbuy yeah bonzo76rockon!!!!!!!!!!lou always wears the coolest frames

  • John Cale...the Man. I interviewed him a few years ago and he was actually pretty warm and friendly. He was commenting unfavorably on John Ashcroft, and I was able to tell him the story about how Ashcroft lost an election in Missouri to a guy who had been dead for six weeks.

Nice rich laugh after that from Cale.

  • Outstanding!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • pittsburgh...

  • Not all comments can be intelligent; John Cale looks like Zorg from The Fifth Element...

  • sadly only few comments are intelligents...

  • is this froma bbs special? or a dvd?

    how many songs they play

  • its a live rendition of Songs for Drella, a tribute they did together for Andy Warhol.

About 14 songs in total if my memory serves me right, this is the opener.

  • Everyone, please come look at my channel, I have a video of me playing the piano part that John is playing here, pretty much note for note. Please can everyone take a look, that would be great and much appreciated! Thanks for this video, it's excellent.

  • thanks for uploading this. i have it on video, but nothing to play it on these days

  • tiz so true about living in a small town & wanting to get the hell out. You cannot be different oh no all people in a small town must be the same or you're considered an oddity. Best of it is I got out yeah I did but guess wot I bloody ended up back in the small small town where it was exactly as the bloody same as the day I left it nowt had changed. But I shall get out oh yes I will leave this horrid small town & never look back THANK GOD

  • Love this song(as I live in a bloody small town) the whole album is fantastic

  • Just SUBLIME

  • How damm true just like Greenock Scotland.

Played this album to death when it cameout,

stole it from Brighton England just ripped off security taglike i done a 1000 times

    backthen.Circa 1990 96.

  • Yeah, and your want to get out of Butte, Montana as fast as you can - even if it takes a motorbike.

Then again, dying there isn't so bad either.

  • This song is so funny!! It reminds me when I was living in a small town in Italy called CAMERINO. I love that place, and I used to sing this song with my friend Pavel in my room, drinking tea in a cold and rainy day... ummm... what a happy memory :)

  • great - thanks for posting.

  • very cool.

    i love this album.

    thank you.

  • I cant stop coming back to this one.really get off on it.wow.

  • je suis fasciné par le visage de John Cale

  • I like this album a lot.

  • the best cd at the world

  • I agree. One of my 10 favorite albums of all time!

  • absolutely classic lou. i wish cale hadn't left the vu.

  • can somebody figure out the chords?

  • Lou's song cycle?? is that sylvia reed writing? I think it might have been a collaboration you know.

  • @fantasticvoyages

well Lou did do most of the work for the album, not that cale isn't important ofcourse

  • @fantasticvoyages hell yeah. Cale is the true genius.

  • A laughed when I saw the look John gave Lou

  • I was lucky enough to see Lou and John perform "Songs for Drella" in Brooklyn,Thanks a Lot!

  • Are you serious polarberkat? You lucky devil!

  • Just had to have another "looky" as I only have it on vhs and can't locate a functioning player anywhere in my electronic graveyard lol. I do remember upon discovering "Drella" I went rather ballistic, thus playing it repeatedly on my radio program at the time...Both artists, still very vital today.

  • fanstastic!

  • Lol thats so funny thanks man.. its perfect

  • yeah I see how Cale is looking at Lou, seems like he like lou very well.

  • Wow thanks I have never seen this!

  • Did I hear someone say "Masterpiece"?

  • wonderfull , thankls for charing this one.

  • The american and the welshman, two contemporary music legends from the Velvet Underground together again. Filmed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Sublime

  • When you're growing up in a small town

Bad skin, bad eyes, gay and fatty

    People look at you funny

When youre in a small town

    My father worked in construction

Its not something for which Im suited

Oh, what is something for which you are suited

    Getting out of here

  • ha! Yes, "growing up in a small town, and you're having a nerivous breakdown!" Yes that was me!

  • oooooooh yesssssssssssss :)

  • This song single-handedly brought back an entire memorable year in college. Thanks for posting it!
