Hey there, i have a little question. Im looking to buy an sg menace, but also think of an sg standard. The most important thing is how crunchy this guitar actually sounds. Is it better suited for metal to hard rock? Cause im a big fan of classic rock all the way to punk. I do love hard rock, but im not an aggressive player. What do you think? Is this guitar good suited for softer songs? A reply would be good, cause its money we're talking about.
@CornerGrosh I play everything from pure clean tones for Jazz/blues through to fully distorted punk/metel on this guitar. it can do it all. if you manage to find one buy it. they were discontinued a couple of years ago.
I love my SG Menace, wouldn't swap it for anything. Get a good amp to go with it. valve amps really bring this guitar alive. I got Fender Blues Jnr that I play it through these days. sounds lush
@metalheadSGMAN Well, it's true, they are hard to find, the guy sold it to another person, since i was hesitating. But it is good to know, in case i have another chance to snatch one of those... Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
i play bass, but i still want this guitar!!!!!.........its such an awsome look and sound. i remember looking at it for hours on gibsons website while it was for sale, sweet playing there too
Man i have the same guitar! I'm not a Hardcore metal player. This guitar was made for metal players. I like the 60's and 70's and this guitar never let me down!
@Glockenator the neck is thicker than usual. and some of the more obvious details. The pickups are different than usual. It has translucent pickups, a heart design at the head and the pick guard has 3 small horizontal slots on the lower part of the pick guard. The Menace is slightly heavier than the standard SG and it has a grooves in the top and bottom part of the body. well worth the 800 I bought it for!
@Glockenator I don't know the exact measurements but they call it a 60's style neck. Its a little bigger than a les paul neck. AND the frets stick out a little bit more than the standard. The guitars playability IMO is great. I prefer a lighter gauge so I can move around quicker.
The 60's neck is also a Les Paul neck. The ususl SG neck is the 50's neck so this one os the thinner of the 2. Les Paul's before 60 had a wide fat neck then in 59 they got a little thinner and in 60 they became the thinnest. Now Les Paul standards actually have a neck that is thicker on the Low E string and thinner on the High E side. As far as frets go there are different heights and thicknesses of them also, it just depends on what each individual guitar has on it.
@nosdog136 There is a 50's thick wide neck, a 60's thinner neck and even an a- symetrical neck and they are the same ones oas on Les Pauls. Frets are different sizes also. Medium, thin, Jumbo wide etc. It just deopends on what the guitar was made with. Gibsons all use the same necks and frets.
I have no idea who would know........ But I've been wondering how this and the Voodoo series stack up against each other..... This guitar sounds downright dirty!!!

Hey Man! AWESOME chops! Does your Mom let you live at home too? Mine does. She's awesome too. She lets me keep my allowance so I can buy cool stuff too...like I have all the G.I. Joe dolls that are worth tons of cash. You are my idol! So RAD!
Great guitar. I had the Les Paul Version of it. I've never been a very big fan in the look of an SG though. I've been looking more into ESP now a days like the H series looks pretty sweet. I have yet to try one.
these are great guitars, one of my friends owns one,he bought it for 1300euros.they are rare guitars and if you find one, you're just very lucky.i recommend it to everyone
It was a limited edition run just like the Les Paul meneace. maybe now it will start going up in value as there still seems to be a lot of people that want one.
is the menace good for metal like sabbath? i heard its around 900 dollars...is it a piece of shit or is it really worth getting when ur doing just smaller gigs (plus minus 2000 people at most)
No guitar is shit, only guitar players are. I run mine through a Line 6 POD 2.0 so I can make it sound like anything I want it to sound like. Mostly, I just like the way it looks. It inspires me to play it and thats all I need from a guitar. The rest is on me, not the guitar. Seriously, its a nice guitar, Looks good. Feels good. Not crazy expensive but you may want to change the pickups someday which will add some money to it. (BTW, 2000 people is NOT a small gig...)
I agree with whiteshark8, its what you do with it that counts. i can get a good sound out of a £70 POS buy adapting my playing. The SG Menace is a great guitar despite its original low cost. they did a great job with it. I play many different styles of music on mine and it is just great.

now i really want a metal style guitar to play but i'm not in the position to break the bank, would you recommend this guitar? also im not a huge fan of the open pickups, you think some simple humbucker covers would still look good on this guitar???
If you want a metal guitar go for Gibson Les Paul, Dean, Jackson, or an Ibanez. Ibanez for heavy metal, Jackson for heavy but clear, Les Paul for basically anything, and Deans for heavy. SGs are more classic rock and squealies.
It does sound perfect for tool! I wonder if tool is one of his influences. It reminded me a lot of Adam Jones! And you can buy it on musicians friend for About $880

I know what you mean, I have a Tele that is just gathering dust and my mate keeps trying to get me to buy a Strat. but in the end my SG menace is the only guitar for me. it's fucking awsome
is the neck easy to navigate with only one fret marker? Are there dots on the top of the neck looking down? Please be honest, seriously considereing this guitar. Nice playing!
to answer the comment aboutthe black finnnish its wooden or liek a woodenish material so like its not like ur normal plastic guitar that scratches i have one ad i ment liek it can get dneted but if u hit ur pick on it it wont scratch easily so yea i highly reccomend this guitar ( it sounds lieka beast and is crazy light)
hey can i ask you a question about the menace. how is the finish on the guitar? typical black finishes have a tendency to get scratched or nicked very easily. also fingerprints easily get on the guitar. is this true with the finish of the menace as well? appreciate the feedback.
It's a black nitrocelulose paint with a satin finish, they use this tpye of paint because it flexes with the wood rather than cracking like acrylic paints do. this does mean the finish is slightly softer but it's still hard wearing. This truely is an amazing and versatile guitar. I play all styles on mine. it rocks and I love it
I dono. can someone give me their opinion on them if they have the angus young nickel humbuckers? cause i almost have enough for an sg menace and i was wondering if itd be worth it to put the angus young pickups on it
It's got the 490R and 498T "Brass Stud" humbuckers. Unfortunately you can only get them as "original equipment".... which means if you want those pickups, you have to buy the guitar.
hey, I wondered if you really liked this sg menace, and I was thinkin of gettin one if possible. Do you think it is a good guitar? and does it have fret markers like above the frets so if you are sitting playing will it have dots on the neck where you can see?
Hi ya u r GOOD. i have some questions what amp do u have and what distortion and i am thinking of getting an sg and i dunno if i should get a menace or a standard.. the funny thing is taht i am gunna get like a 900-1500$ guitar for Grade Eight Grad lmao.. pls reply
Hi, the amp was an old Park(Marshall) practice amp (sadley it later died). the distortion was just the second gain on the amp. These days I use a Marshall stack (super clean) with a Blackstar HT Dual distortion pedal (feckin amazing pedal). now I have all the tones I have ever dreamed of.
Get the menace it's such a versitile guitar and also cheap compared to the standard.
How do you like the guitar im thinking of making an investment and i want a gibson. and this is one of the lower priced ones out there. Just want some feed-back.
only started playing seriously in the last couple of years, have been playing acoustic on and off since I was 17. am 41 now. Drums are my first and best instrument, but have not played them for nearly 20 years
i dont think you should emg's have a really sterile and frankly ugly tone now if you play metal and want active then i would say go for seymour duncan dave mustaine livewires or if you want passive pickups then gor for dimarzio D activators
Very nice, I own a SG Menace too (with a line 6 spider 3 120 - probly will buy something better in future), though I think, that it was a bit expensive. In Poland I paid 2.800zl (dunno how much it is in gbp - maybe something around 700-800gbp). Nevertheless I m very glad that I bought it. Got one question for you, do you have trouble with cleaning it? I bought today 2 sets of cleaning stuff for my gibby, cause i cant take the fingerprints on the body and that damn dust ;/
i dont bother so much now, i keep the dust off and give it a good clean every couple of weeks. but it's been played hard and has afew knocks so I'm not so presious about it now.
There aren't any Vs or Xplorers that use smokey coil pickups at the moment, but honestly, the 496R/500T that come standard on Xplorers and Vs sound better anyway.
Either way, if you're looking for a nice cheap ["cheap" by Gibson Standards] SG or Les Paul, get one of the menace series. ^^
hey im planning on getting one of these to replace my crappy old squier i'm not sure though if i really want to spend the 850 for it at guitar center or just get a melody maker for 400 becuz the 850 is a big jump from a squier
$800 to $900 in the US new. It's not just for metal. On a 5150 you could get great heavy sounds from it. On a JCM800 nice and bluesy to whatever you wanted depending on the pedal. I have the LP version and will not give it up. I suck when I play but I suck less with a meanass. Rock on SGMAN
I use this guitar for everything! metal, punk, blues, jazz, rock. it is so versatile. just go to soundslive website if your in europe. they can't be beat. and do price matching.
Nice playing brother! I'm thinking of buying one can i ask a couple of questions? First hows the neck and the action like to play on? And second is it only good for metal or can you play like blues and funk on it as well?
I have one myself and it's awesome. The neck is really nice because it's not that thin, it's like the normal SG neck. It plays very smooth. The neck pickup is really nice for blues and funk, it's not just a metal guitar. I love it^^
Like I've said before in the earlier comments, this is a really versatile guitar. easy to play, nice action fast neck. can get great clean tones from it. it's great for blues and i have even used it for some jazz. a real bargin, best guitar I've ever had.
I know what you mean about the tone, sounded a little different when I was playing. this was recordr on the web cams mic. am getting a new amp soon, all valves so should have some nice warm tones then
Do you do that often where you apply pressure to bend the note by actually bending the neck?I wouldn't do that too often,I doubt its very good for the guitar.
thanks, if you want to hear just how versatile this guitar is check out my vid "This is a Rollerblind" you will her just what can be acheived with this amazing guitar!
the SG menace is a fantastic guitar for metal junkies... you wont have to pay out of the ass for it ive seen them as low as $800 and its worth every penny... i recently got one of my own... not a single regret... i only wish i got mine sooner... this is a MUST BUY in my opinion
how nice is that one to play because at the moment im torn between the menace, the new century one or a guitar shop i know has got a limited run of sg's with p-90 pick ups all of which i am seriously tempted by but yer nice playing aswell
the sound was straight from my little Park practice amp, gain cranked up with a good chunk of reverb. The guitar can be as clean or dirty as you want it. I have really fallen in love with this guitar. I mean I've always wanted one and I was stoked when I bought it, but the real love has come from finding out just what this thing is capable of. go buy one you will love it..
oh yeah, it's very versatile. you can still get lovely clean warms tones out of it. just play with the pick up selection and turn down the pickup vol control a bit and it can do great clean jazz sounds too.
Hey everyone ! Think that metalheadSGMAN plays well but if you want (harder) metal plays, just search "insorior' on youytube, and you will see ;)

i dont think you should emg's have a really sterile and frankly ugly tone now if you play metal and want active then i would say go for seymour duncan dave mustaine livewires or if you want passive pickups then gor for dimarzio D activators
ImThEkOoLeStYeA 4 years ago
so what do u think about the duncan dimebuckers for playing metal?
Vulkanhallen 4 years ago
i know alot of people use it and from wat ive heard they are very good but i havnt had direct experience with them
ImThEkOoLeStYeA 4 years ago
Very nice, I own a SG Menace too (with a line 6 spider 3 120 - probly will buy something better in future), though I think, that it was a bit expensive. In Poland I paid 2.800zl (dunno how much it is in gbp - maybe something around 700-800gbp). Nevertheless I m very glad that I bought it. Got one question for you, do you have trouble with cleaning it? I bought today 2 sets of cleaning stuff for my gibby, cause i cant take the fingerprints on the body and that damn dust ;/
Skwarekkk 4 years ago
i dont bother so much now, i keep the dust off and give it a good clean every couple of weeks. but it's been played hard and has afew knocks so I'm not so presious about it now.
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
Are you going to buy another guitar or will you keep the menace ?
Skwarekkk 4 years ago
I'll keep the menace but I am thinking of getting a Les Paul standard as well. I would also like a strat but the Les Paul will come first
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
Please don't call it a Gibby
MyBentleyGT 4 years ago
I call'em Gibbys.
ZephMan13 4 years ago
Nice sg i wonder if they might make a V and X plorer menace series...
clovernewt 4 years ago
There aren't any Vs or Xplorers that use smokey coil pickups at the moment, but honestly, the 496R/500T that come standard on Xplorers and Vs sound better anyway.
Either way, if you're looking for a nice cheap ["cheap" by Gibson Standards] SG or Les Paul, get one of the menace series. ^^

metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
hey im planning on getting one of these to replace my crappy old squier i'm not sure though if i really want to spend the 850 for it at guitar center or just get a melody maker for 400 becuz the 850 is a big jump from a squier
whoathur1 4 years ago
£550 from soundslive in Newcastle, bought mine online from them. great service arrived next day

So how does the ebony finger board feel on a SG?
TheMercenaryArtist 4 years ago
wut kinda amp u got??
tyler24000 4 years ago
Thats a nice guitar.
How much was it?
&They said it was a guitar used for metal, is that true?
awesomezx 4 years ago
$800 to $900 in the US new. It's not just for metal. On a 5150 you could get great heavy sounds from it. On a JCM800 nice and bluesy to whatever you wanted depending on the pedal. I have the LP version and will not give it up. I suck when I play but I suck less with a meanass. Rock on SGMAN
txjackace 4 years ago
How about punk?
awesomezx 4 years ago
I use this guitar for everything! metal, punk, blues, jazz, rock. it is so versatile. just go to soundslive website if your in europe. they can't be beat. and do price matching.
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
you said you were getting a new amp soon.
why all valve?
save your money and buy something with tubes.
In my opinion a marshall jcm 900 or something like that.
you kinda got to build up and ear for it but if you go from a tube amp to a valve amp you WILL hear a difference.
If I were you i would wait a little and try out some more amps before you buy what your looking at.
but if you still come back to that valve amp I ain't stopping you
BlackHoleSun478 4 years ago
Tubes in the US. Valves on the other side of the water. I think they are the same thing.
txjackace 4 years ago
a tube and valve is exactly the same its a valve of the sound and its in the shape of a tube.

Nice playing brother! I'm thinking of buying one can i ask a couple of questions? First hows the neck and the action like to play on? And second is it only good for metal or can you play like blues and funk on it as well?
Barracuda007 4 years ago
I have one myself and it's awesome. The neck is really nice because it's not that thin, it's like the normal SG neck. It plays very smooth. The neck pickup is really nice for blues and funk, it's not just a metal guitar. I love it^^
koetjeboebla 4 years ago
Like I've said before in the earlier comments, this is a really versatile guitar. easy to play, nice action fast neck. can get great clean tones from it. it's great for blues and i have even used it for some jazz. a real bargin, best guitar I've ever had.
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
Oh dude ya should of got back to me sooner!! I bought a les paul BFG now but it's sweet as hell, you should try one out if you get the chance.
Barracuda007 4 years ago
sorry, was off line for a couple of weeks while i moved house. the Les Paul's are really good too, just have to save and get an SG as well!

you're a really good player, and I dig the guitar except I don't really like you're tone.
somethingmorethanink 4 years ago
I know what you mean about the tone, sounded a little different when I was playing. this was recordr on the web cams mic. am getting a new amp soon, all valves so should have some nice warm tones then
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
i have been looking at getting this guitar for a while, it sounds really wicked and its prety cheap for a gibson :D.
NinjaBryan 4 years ago
Do you do that often where you apply pressure to bend the note by actually bending the neck?I wouldn't do that too often,I doubt its very good for the guitar.
rlta04 4 years ago
no not often it scares me a bit. wish it had a trem. would be perfect then
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
Doesn't effect the guitar, they aren't made out of plastic.
dudeyys 4 years ago

cassandradenisbjj 4 years ago

metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago

thecrazyrat 4 years ago

metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago

LittleBritain93 4 years ago
BUY IT!!!!!!!
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
i'm thinking on buy this guitar, how good is it?
i mean, all, the sound, the quallity... that sound is direct from the amplifier? or is from a distiorsion pedal or something else?
tell me all about this guitar, i think i have fall in love, but i want to assure it.
thanks
wains 4 years ago
the sound was straight from my little Park practice amp, gain cranked up with a good chunk of reverb. The guitar can be as clean or dirty as you want it. I have really fallen in love with this guitar. I mean I've always wanted one and I was stoked when I bought it, but the real love has come from finding out just what this thing is capable of. go buy one you will love it..
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
wains, have you not read all my replies!!!! this is straight from my little Park practice amp. NO EFFECTS!!!!! go buy it you will not regret it
metalheadSGMAN 4 years ago
Can you get a bluesy/Angus Young type tone out of the Menace?
dirtydeeds2447 4 years ago
oh yeah, it's very versatile. you can still get lovely clean warms tones out of it. just play with the pick up selection and turn down the pickup vol control a bit and it can do great clean jazz sounds too.
