  • @12Xenna. Their reeds are actually different sized but very close in size. The contrabass reeds are slightly larger than the contraalto and bass sax. The reason why some people think all 3 are the same is because Rico sells 3 in 1 boxes for those 3 but they generally leak on the contrabass mouthpiece unless you have a smaller width mouthpeice, like a few.

  • 12Xzenna

  • Where did you get your reeds? I cant find any for my contrabass.

  • Contrabassoon Solo!!!! :O!!!!

  • I've played this instrument for 4 years in high school. It is so fun, stick with it man. The only thing I can tell you to work on is Rhythms, Scales, Chromatic Scale, and Speed. Intonation will come in time. Intonation is how good or bad your tone sounds. In this video there's some air going through the horn instead of it all supporting the tone. The way to fix it is to practice a lot and to make sure your mouth seals the mouthpiece good. Assuming your reed is in good condition. Good Luck!

  • i want to play that soo badly my band instuctor might let on of the 3 of us play it, i really hope he picks mee(:

  • Are the fingerings the same as the other clarinettes?

  • I play this instrument also 8D I love it so much ^^

I play this one and Bflat, and I prefer alto contras because of how deep they are C:

-I HATE the high pitched sound the Bflat clarinet makes-

  • @14MichMex Not sure if it actually counts, but Gregg Bailey's PVC clarinet should be last.

  • Does a Contra Bass and Contra Alto have the same reed size?

  • @12Xenna

Yeah the reed sizes are the same for Contrabass Clarinet, Contra-alto Clarinet, and Bass Saxophone. (not to be confused with Baritone Saxophone)

  • well i managed to switch from trumpet to bass clarinet but i got a piece of music that read Eb Contrabass Clarinet. XD

  • I play Bb bass clarinet and it cost a few grand I can't imagine how much that cost

  • @CDC5482 This particular model only cost about $3,000 but a professional Selmer model would cost up to around $30,000

  • Cb clarinet is in b-flat

  • Omfg Maddie would freak out and they cost about 5,000 bc our school instrument one cost that much

  • holy crap how much did that cost!!!! :O

  • @WeaponMaster1346667

    It goes:

    Eb (Soprano?) Clarinet

    Typical Bb clarinet

    Eb Alto

    Bb Bass

    Eb Contra-Alto

    Bb Contra-Bass

  • @neferiel Bb Piccolo Clarinet Eb Clarinet (it can be either soprano or sopranino) Bb Soprano Clarinet A Basset Clarinet F Basset Horn Eb Alto Clarinet Bb Bass Clarinet Eb Contra-alto Clarinet Bb Contrabass Clarinet Eb Octocontra-alto Clarinet Bb Octocontrabass Clarinet. The only thing about the last two is that only 3 Octocontra-altos have ever been built and only 1 Octocontrabass.
  • I used to play this in high school. Very cool old-school instrument. I always ended up playing basslines because contemporary music has no parts for it.

  • im in the bailey middle school wind ensamble.. .theres about 78 of us this year.. and guess what i play... BASS CLARINET AND CONTRA BASS CLARINET!! (: i love it

  • I play bass clarinet and I love how low I can go! :D I'm a beginner but I'm the only one in my band and I'm getting better.. My band has only 15 people and the grade ahead of mine has 15 so we get together and play as one big band! :D 2 bass clarinets 4 clarinets 5 flutes 1 trombone 2 tubas 5 trumpets 4 alto saxophones 6 percussionists :) long live band :)

  • @23mrsedwardcullen ~~ I love it! Keep up the good work! Sounds like you're really enjoying it! Just remember! Practice! Practice! PRACTICE!!! LOL

  • @23mrsedwardcullen No horn players??? (your band must suck...)

  • @23mrsedwardcullen lol im the only bass clarinet in my band too!!!! but im in advanced :). my band director said he'll put me on the bassoon and contra bass- i already play thhe smaller bass :)

  • @23mrsedwardcullen Wow, we seperate all the grades and each grade by Brass and Woodwind/Percussion and we have like 70 kids per class.

  • @23mrsedwardcullen yeah im getting a bass clarinet tommorow :D i play regular clarinet but im moving on to bass clarinet. my friend says its the same fingerings as a regular clarinet so im ready :D

  • damn! big clarinet! i play Bb Clarinet. GO BAND GEEKS! XO

  • good job!!! try sluring

  • It's meant for bass clarinet though.

  • @AmaLeGay It was actually written for contrabassoon to be exact.

  • @AmaLeGay Bass clarinet actually can't reach low enough, not even with a low C.

  • I play the Eb Contra Alto Clarinet in my high school band. I'd love to get ahold of one of those and play it!

  • nice. Sounds like it requires alot of air.

  • I am one of two contrabassists in my city. I am very desperate to meet the other. I love playing. :D What song is this?

  • @socutecc It's called "Never smile at a crocodile" it was in the Disney movie Peter Pan, played on a contrabassoon though... =)

  • Best video ever.

  • That thing is freaking awesome!

  • i could never play something like that. its so deep it would probally scare me

  • Amazing instrument! I play both, and I don't think I have ever seen a Bb contra that isn't a "Paperclip" edition.

  • lol this is cool. i wanna try one out sooo bad.

  • My friends didn't believe me that they excisted! D:<

  • Hahaa one of my friends plays this

  • @MrQfoo haha yeah I play a bassoon and that's a beast but the contra is even better lol.. Oh and by the way awesome clarinet.! You must have to be a certain hieght to play that..!

  • Three letters....OMG

  • Are you tonguing on the room of your mouth? I can hear the delay. You're supposed to tongue on the reed, like all other clarinets.

  • @MaestroPS2008 Hey, he said he was just learning. Also, I now have clarinet envy. My b-flat is so embarrassingly small.

  • sounds airy.

  • where'd you find the music for this?

  • @wackyfun512 I just watched the movie Peter Pan, listened closely, and I figured it out :-D

  • @clamman64 i new it was peter pan i new it

  • This thing xD is BEAST!!!!!

  • dnag thats long

  • @inexactcleric Thas what she said XD

  • @clamman64 wow seriuosly

  • i just started playing the contrabass calrinet haha its so cool!!!!!

  • Look up contra Bassoon thats dope right there

  • Where did you get a Contrabass!!! I have a Bass And a Bb clarinet but i have looked all over the internet for a reasonably priced Contrabass Clarinet and i cant find one

  • @ClarGibson There is a leblanc contrabass on ebay for 199$. Only the case needs repairs.

  • @catkids34 thank you. I'm actually looking for a Selmer for my school band and my music teacher wants me to find a cheep Selmer Contrabass Clarinet. but thank you

  • I've always preferred to play the E-Flat Contra-Alto Clarinet, since I could easily use Tuba parts. My band director wouldnt let me use Tuba parts on the B-Flat Contra, instead he gave me Bass Clarinet parts, but I kept telling him I could transpose Tuba parts. He didnt listen, and the Bass Clarinet part clashed with the Tuba part. I opted for String Bass a week later. Much better choice.

  • i thought bass clarinets were big cuz i play it in my summer begining band class i also play percussion in symphonic

  • Well played sir.

  • dude so wut i play BBb tuba it harder and heavyer

  • @airsoft911full

Honestly, I play the BBb tuba too and they each present their own challenges. You can't say one is harder than the other kiddo.

  • @clamman64 damn straight. And honestly, I don't see why the bass section has to argue when we can all be racist against the trumpets.

  • @airsoft911full I play Tuba, Contrabass Clarinet, and String Bass. I find Contrabass Clarinet is a lot harder to play in general. The Tuba takes a lot of air to play, but this monster will have you taking deep breaths too, especially in the low range. 3-4 valves is much easier to navigate than 20+ keys.

  • @airsoft911full Comparing Woodwind and Brass is like comparing the penis to the vagina. Two completely different things... Bad analogy.

  • i love diiis song man itss so awesome

im in 6th grade and im requesting a contrabass clarinet in my band

soo may i subscribe and you can give me some updated tips, because my class iss sooooooo stupid and sloww

  • wow. i never thought somethin like that would exist! & i thought a bass clarinet was big

  • Ugh! You puff your cheeks when you play? Break that habit!

  • fantastic tembre!

  • out of breath?

  • That thing is so long

  • @Dhiifs

    that's what she said!

  • @imgame2121 haha nice!

  • Jeez. That's one heck of a clarinet. And I thought the bass clarinet was big. Wow.

  • lol. contra bass is amazing

    nice job

  • Do you play another instrument for real?

  • Man! you better look out, you gonna get surrounded by kangaroo.

It kinda does sound like a digerdoo or something like that, Hell I'M from texas! I don't

know what there called, I'l just say it like ah Texan would, That fucken thing the australians blow in to right before there about to fuck someone up

  • that thing is like a bass clarinet on steroids O_o

  • very good, keep on going^^

  • Does it have the same fingering as any of the other clarinets??

  • @Lukozade123 yes, as long as you account for the extra low Eb Key.

  • Mine's all curvy and stuff, so I dont have to stand up to use it. =) That's awesome though!

  • @lifeismystory lol, is it paperclip style?

  • @dragun695 Yup it is =) I <3 My Contra Bass =)

  • The song and the the instrument go together perfectly.

  • whoa this thing is low

  • When you blow these thing your lungs feel like they are twirling.

  • its a very easy instrument

    i love it

  • i play contra eb it makes a much better sound and u have to lossen up more to get a better tone quality

  • don't puff out your cheeks or it won't sound good o_0

  • omg total props for playing peter pan :D

  • thats mhy instrument and its juss suppose to add a bottom to the woodwind family and it sound really good when someone can play it well!

  • These "CONTRA BASS" instruments sound like large animals farting/ dieing and I just dont like them. I'd rather have a tuba / bass clarinet to bring in the "PUNCH" of the piece?

  • @ipodgenius1x1 i play tuba i like it but all a tuba is is a bass for the band contra sax would be awesome

  • that thing is just a beast... it's really any of us need to know o.O

  • Hey it's the theme of the crocodile for old Walt Disney Peter Pan

  • When I hear this, I picture a fat person walking down the street, or eating greedily. XD

  • lol it sounds like it XD

  • Hehe. John Goodman

  • you know what the difference between and a tractor is ............

    vi-bro...lol

  • It seems that the Contra Bass and alto don't sound very clean. Kinda like a lawn mower.

  • @Shawnzx243 Thats why I only play regular and bass clarinet. Especially bass clainet, its so much fun to make that thing roar! >:3

  • @Shawnzx243 what is so bad about alto...if your going to complain about an instrument being high then soprano is worse.

  • That is so cool i thought there was only to types of clarinets

  • Puffing ur cheeks XD

  • could you send me the notes so that i can play that??

    please??

  • Its bigger than Contra Alto?

I thought it just wrapped around more.

  • the contra bass sax is still a bit lower

  • @skully720

Actually, this instrument is a perfect 5th lower than the contrabass, because if im not mistaken, the Contrabass sax is in Eb,while the Contrabass clarinet is in Bb

  • Be more confident in your playing mate. It took me a day to get used to playing mine, but I play it everyday in symphony band. That was good tho ^_^ Yours looks very different than mine.. Min loops, and without a stand, is only about as TALL as a bass clarinet..

  • that thing is so long it barely fits on the screen, but its pretty cool

  • Make sure the bell rattles.(: Lol, but good very good

  • sounds kinda scary =D

  • which brand of clarinet is this one? and which strength of reed are you using? sounds pretty neat

  • Comment removed

  • there is another clarinet called the octo contrabass clarinet, and there is only one in the world made by Leblanc. It goes one octave lower than the standard contrabass clarinet, but I couldnt find any pictures with it.

  • It must be hard to play over the break on that thing!

  • that looks nothing like my bass clarinet

  • CROCODILE!!!

  • OMG PETER PAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just recently switched from bass clarinet to contrabass clarinet and it's Awesome!

  • That looks nothing like the Contrabass Clarinet my school's band has.

  • my friend plays that

  • i thought contrabass clari was Eb?

  • thats a contra alto.

  • its a contra bass not a contra alto, the alto isnt that tall!

  • no contra alto clarinets are in eb

  • so did i, the Eb contrabass is known as the contra-alto clarinet, im guessing because the most well known sax is the alto and its tuned the same as an alto

  • i play Bb clarinet also but its a regular. i can get one of those in the future '-'

  • Wow, it looks like it took a lot of air for YOU to play (and you're a pretty tall guy), I can't imagine how much lung strength I'd need to play...

    Bass Clarinet rules :3

    but I REALLY want a contrabass!! *u*

  • I played bass clarinet, and it was almost as tall as me, maybe a foot or so shorter, but if they made me play the contrabass, I would have needed a stool to play that sucker!

  • I play contra bass clarinet too!Iam very happy!

    Iam japanese :-)♪

  • I play bass clarinet now, but I reaaallly wanna switch to this! OMG tha'd be so awesome!

  • Whoa! this is an awsome song :D

  • this is too low... i play normal clarinet D:

  • can it do the brown note?????????

  • i play bass clarinet and personaly i think its to deep this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to deep

  • i marched with my bass clarinet last year i disliked it a lot. so i ended up marching the regular clarinet this year

  • holy crap I play a REGULAR clarinet but DANG!

  • wow the bore looks really small i thbought itde be huge liek i play bass clarinet and that seems huge compared to the normal claqrinet

  • The bore is much bigger than a bass clarinet. Its just that the body isnt made out of resin here, but brass. The body doesnt have to be as large when made this way, but the bore remains the same.

  • HOLY SNAP THAT'S HUGE!!!

Wasn't that from Peter Pan when the Croc came in??

  • around $20,000 for a nice one

  • I have missed that sound so much! I played that all through HS and wish I could buy one, just to play around with...

  • great! i played clarinet until 7th grade and switched to bass clarinet. ive always wondered what a contra bass sounds/looks like. (:

  • It depends on the condition, you could probably get a good deal off of ebay, but be careful what you buy, because you may have to deal with replacing pads and getting the whole instrument repaired, which is a major pain

  • love the song um... it went to .... the crocodile off of peter the pan

  • LOVE IT!!

  • Whoa! That is huge! Sounds cool. I cant imagine how much breath is must take to play that.

  • OMG! I love this song! I never knew how big the contrabass Clarinet was, let alone that there even was one! You did awesome!!!

  • thanks!

  • LOL That is cool! I couldn't imagine marching with it >.>

  • usually ud march with a regular clarinet (and tht goes for thsoe who play the bass clarinet as well)

  • A high school in my area actually allows them to march bass clarinets and contra-alto clarinets. Why they even bother I dont know, because bass and lower just sounds to dark for outdoor playing.

  • They do!!! I play Bass Clarinet for my HS band, and they have me march with it! At least they don't make me march the Contra...

  • That's weird at my HS you don't play bass clarinet in marching band.

  • I know it's weird, probably because I can't play the Soprano very well... (I Rock at the Bass)

  • Haha, that's cool. I'm new at it and at Clarinet all together, so I suck. :p

  • Yeah, but I've payed the Soprano for 4 1/2 years and I still suck : ( I've only played the bass for 1/2 years and I make amazing sounds on it : D

  • That's cool. :]

  • ya, i did too, marching season just ended, and im learning tenor for symphonic band

  • Wow! Over 100,000 views. I NEVER thought this would be that popular...

  • Thats because there are no contrabass clarinet videos anywhere

  • make a new vid :P

  • lol, the contra we had in our band got to play around the note at 0:18 all by himself during "Funkytown" in a concert. It was awesome.

  • so is the fingering still the same as a normal Bb clarinet?

  • yes, but everything is on a larger scale.

  • Ah, ok, thanks

  • yes

  • lovely

  • ive played next to one of these, they scare me :P

  • peter pan!

  • Nice!

  • you are squidward, squidward...

  • Comment removed

  • lol in my opinion its funny this video has over 94000 views

  • it looks like a flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet put together!!!!

  • Holy Crap...

  • wow nice XD reminds me of a string bass XD

  • wats the difference between bass contrabass and subcontrabass
