@12Xenna. Their reeds are actually different sized but very close in size. The contrabass reeds are slightly larger than the contraalto and bass sax. The reason why some people think all 3 are the same is because Rico sells 3 in 1 boxes for those 3 but they generally leak on the contrabass mouthpiece unless you have a smaller width mouthpeice, like a few.
I've played this instrument for 4 years in high school. It is so fun, stick with it man. The only thing I can tell you to work on is Rhythms, Scales, Chromatic Scale, and Speed. Intonation will come in time. Intonation is how good or bad your tone sounds. In this video there's some air going through the horn instead of it all supporting the tone. The way to fix it is to practice a lot and to make sure your mouth seals the mouthpiece good. Assuming your reed is in good condition. Good Luck!
@neferiel Bb Piccolo Clarinet Eb Clarinet (it can be either soprano or sopranino) Bb Soprano Clarinet A Basset Clarinet F Basset Horn Eb Alto Clarinet Bb Bass Clarinet Eb Contra-alto Clarinet Bb Contrabass Clarinet Eb Octocontra-alto Clarinet Bb Octocontrabass Clarinet. The only thing about the last two is that only 3 Octocontra-altos have ever been built and only 1 Octocontrabass.
I used to play this in high school. Very cool old-school instrument. I always ended up playing basslines because contemporary music has no parts for it.
im in the bailey middle school wind ensamble.. .theres about 78 of us this year.. and guess what i play... BASS CLARINET AND CONTRA BASS CLARINET!! (: i love it

@MrQfoo haha yeah I play a bassoon and that's a beast but the contra is even better lol.. Oh and by the way awesome clarinet.! You must have to be a certain hieght to play that..!
Where did you get a Contrabass!!! I have a Bass And a Bb clarinet but i have looked all over the internet for a reasonably priced Contrabass Clarinet and i cant find one
@catkids34 thank you. I'm actually looking for a Selmer for my school band and my music teacher wants me to find a cheep Selmer Contrabass Clarinet. but thank you
I've always preferred to play the E-Flat Contra-Alto Clarinet, since I could easily use Tuba parts. My band director wouldnt let me use Tuba parts on the B-Flat Contra, instead he gave me Bass Clarinet parts, but I kept telling him I could transpose Tuba parts. He didnt listen, and the Bass Clarinet part clashed with the Tuba part. I opted for String Bass a week later. Much better choice.
@airsoft911full I play Tuba, Contrabass Clarinet, and String Bass. I find Contrabass Clarinet is a lot harder to play in general. The Tuba takes a lot of air to play, but this monster will have you taking deep breaths too, especially in the low range. 3-4 valves is much easier to navigate than 20+ keys.
These "CONTRA BASS" instruments sound like large animals farting/ dieing and I just dont like them. I'd rather have a tuba / bass clarinet to bring in the "PUNCH" of the piece?
Actually, this instrument is a perfect 5th lower than the contrabass, because if im not mistaken, the Contrabass sax is in Eb,while the Contrabass clarinet is in Bb
Be more confident in your playing mate. It took me a day to get used to playing mine, but I play it everyday in symphony band. That was good tho ^_^ Yours looks very different than mine.. Min loops, and without a stand, is only about as TALL as a bass clarinet..

so did i, the Eb contrabass is known as the contra-alto clarinet, im guessing because the most well known sax is the alto and its tuned the same as an alto
I played bass clarinet, and it was almost as tall as me, maybe a foot or so shorter, but if they made me play the contrabass, I would have needed a stool to play that sucker!
The bore is much bigger than a bass clarinet. Its just that the body isnt made out of resin here, but brass. The body doesnt have to be as large when made this way, but the bore remains the same.
It depends on the condition, you could probably get a good deal off of ebay, but be careful what you buy, because you may have to deal with replacing pads and getting the whole instrument repaired, which is a major pain
A high school in my area actually allows them to march bass clarinets and contra-alto clarinets. Why they even bother I dont know, because bass and lower just sounds to dark for outdoor playing.
