On an early model, like we used, you'll need to cut the firewall and extend it back about 3-4 inches. If it's a later model, the firewall has this clearance from factory and the engine will pretty much bolt straight in.
Also, if you turn the turbo around so the exhaust outlet is facing the rear, it will make the dump pipe MUCH easier to make and fit.
@ThroneDrei00 We used the stock gearbox, but had to get a custom clutch IIRC as the spline count on the input shaft was different to the car the engine came from. Any decent clutch workshop will be able to sort something out.
Pretty much a bolt in swap. There is a bit of custom fabrication to be done though, mainly with intake and exhaust. If you have an early L300, you will have to extend the firewall back to fit the engine. The later models already have this extra space as standard. We extended ours in half a day with a sabre saw, sheet metal and a welder.
The block is the same, so the actual fitment is a piece of cake.
As for the gearbox, it bolts directly up, but we had to stuff around with the flywheel and spline count on the input shaft on the gearbox. A small play around with clutches (easy to sort out) fixed that issue.
I wouldn't have a clue. I personally wouldn't touch a Kia with a 10 foot pole.
Especially for a turbo engine swap, the body is flexible enough as it is, the chassis and suspension just wouldn't cope with the power, let alone the drive train.
mean! got a L300 van aswell with 4G63 turbo engine aswell, the works done to, does good skids lol and love passing people with the external screaming in their ear!!! good times!!
man thats sick! i wana do this to my l3 ive been lookin for a vid of the 4G63 in one for ages... theyr pretty hard to come by cheap in new zealand arent they
It is in the stock configuration for the L300, using the stock gearbox (It's pretty tough). We had a little stuff around with the input shaft for the gearbox, just count the number of splines and get a clutch to suit (we used an Excedy clutch) I can't remember what flywheel we used though.
The block is the same, but the head is different. There are minor other differences, like the spline count on the output shaft etc. But the block itself is a direct bolt in.
This engine was actually from a VR4 Galant.
Oh, it has since been retuned to output 213Kw at the wheels, and there is still improvements to be made...

is there lots of wheel spin? have you tried power sliding it :D
4im trying to fool around with the "family van" :D
tenshiMijah 2 years ago
Lots of wheel spin. It has an open diff, so it's pretty much undriveable in the wet.... A limited slip diff is a must.

i have the l300 van, im planning to that also so that it would not be boring, how bout the tranny and shafts? is this a bolt on swap?

There is nothing that is not awesome about an L300 Express that beats FTO's from the lights.

The A/C was removed, still to see if we can squeeze it in. Also the engine mounts required a tiny bit of trimming (about 1/2 a 5 cent piece worth).
Some pipework for the coolant lines was bent up to suit the new orientation and custom plumbing was made too.
TERRAOperative 4 years ago
hey terra how much mods were done to fit this motor in?

It's the twin cam engine from the VR4 Galant.
The old engine ended up full of stale beer, cigarette butts and Powerade...

is it a twin cam or SOHC 8 valve 4g63 (the engine the car came with)
