@007jkirk this is about the futility of war.. the situation is one in which two enemy warriors upon the sea find themselves onboard a ship basically dead in the water whose decimatated crew have begun cannibalizing the dead. The enemy combatant, who we can deduce, has gotten aboard after his ship is gone to Davy Jones' locker, is accepted as a friend through his smile; he requests permission to partake of the 'meal' which is the "purple baby" (corpse).
