  • Dude you are a good drummer

  • I just got some drums not too long ago. I only have the standard 3 toms and a bass drum and a hi-hat. I still need to get a snare. And in my toms I have an unwanted echo in the toms..got any home- made remedy ideas for that prob?

  • degadegadahdegadugada.. you know what i'm saying?

  • My bass drum sped is appalling, no matter how long I've practiced it the next day week or month after, nothing. Growing to hate drumming is a shit experience

  • @sambrady92 Dont get discouraged, we all have those moments. Speed is built mostly by burst exercises. Set a metronome to a speed where you cant play consistent 8ths. play quarter notes on beats 1-3 & 8ths on beat 4. Once you can do that for a reasonable time, play the 8ths on beats 3 & 4. then move to 8ths on 2-4 & then to all beats. Then you just have to play 8ths for endurance. Once you have the group of 4 down, you can start the group of 2 on a higher BPM. Dont forget to chart your progress

  • mike johnston has a weak link? what kind of world do we live in

  • thats insane!

  • pause at 0:11 his face is hilarious!

  • dude your better than me with one hand

i dont think i'll ever be as good as you.

    me being 16

  • grate Mike!.. thanks a lot for sharing!.. i'm gonna practice this!.. thanks bro!

  • great presentation man, serious chops!

  • How far should your high hats be apart?

  • @rshelp2 They should be an inch or less apart

  • Seems like MJ's are just destined for greatness. Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, and now Mike Johnston.

  • hey are you using a double pedal? mike your so awsome. i wish i can be like you. from Philippines.

  • lovely kit

  • jeez i couldnt do that if i tryed

  • Question: why does my kick drum sound like it should be in the marching band? How do I get the "chuh" sound?

  • @DaSilverandBlack tune the bassdrum until you get a proper sound

  • @DaSilverandBlack Tune it tell you get the you get that sound or you can tune it relatively well and then use a dampener of some sort. Which ever one they both work

  • Awesome, Mike! You're one of my idols, and keeps inspiring me (and probably thousands of others) in our drumming!

But could you post a vid where you show how you tune your drums to get that punchy sound? :)

  • increadible! I've been watching your videos, and I think that you are building a new evolution of drumming! Congratulations from Brazil!

  • sick.

  • Man you are awesome i wathed a few of ypur videos and i think i will be a huge help to me as a beganer.thanks man!

  • clearly, you have double-bass pedals. clearly :-/

  • that hella helped thanks!!!!

  • how do you tune your drums?

  • your inspiring

    <3

  • anybody? he using slide or heal toe technique, im working on both but want to do the one he does, cus it obviously works :P :)

  • @RHCPsammyflea Mike seems reluctant to show his foot technique but I'd guess heal-toe.

  • very cool

  • Great exercise man! Kick-Ass!

  • I have been playing drums for a little shy over a year and im a very fast learner and my first song i learned was "Chop Suey" by System of a down but i whant to go to really the ground up but i dont know where to start could you help me somebody??/

  • This could also help left foot speed and strength with double bass. Just switch by doing it right hand right foot down and then left hand left foot up. nice!

  • Pretty awesome, I'll have to give it a shot this week end. Contrary to most people, my right hand's the weakest, which is odd. That should help it!

  • I think he can do a solo with one hand XD

  • Dude those fucking drums sound so nice

  • It's official...Mike is better than all us with just half of his body.

  • @BurningGundam85 shiid probally just u

  • Hey Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with the world. For many years I've asked people "Do you give lessons?". Most reply no, or don't have the time. I am almost four decades of age and have been playing only a few years now. That has been on and off at best. My biggest problem has been being a southpaw and learning to play right handed. I felt until watching this video that I was the only one who had "weak links". Thanks Again!

  • Your toms make me want to rape your drumset. Is that bad? :P

  • You are a complete KAH teacher: Knowledge, Approach, Humour. I will definitely buy your lessons and your book. Keep up the good work

  • "dorked by the dangling dong of do" hahahaha!XD

  • im sorry but this exercise will not get your foot that fast :| HOW MANN!!!

  • just a suggestion, better have another camera showing what your feet does while doing the exercise. thanks you for this lesson it really helped me.

  • haha, he can play better than me with one hand and foot!!!

  • hey mike,

what size bass drum is that? looks like a 20...

  • Great video!! Sorta made up my own paradiddle exercise but after watching this I like this one better! Keep it up!

  • Holy Mother of DW.

  • Anyone here the black dick joke...? Dorked...by the dangling dong...of Do.

  • what type of cymbals are those?

  • I love you mike. and i love your dw kit.

  • dorked by the dangling dong of doo

  • thanx 4 sharing, thats a cool little fill!! can't quite do it up to speed , i give it about another week? thanx man!!

  • "Linear Drumming by Mike Johnston" Is an awesome book, I'm not much for book learning but this one spoke to me!! tricky but once you get the hang of it.. Its addictive!! You go Mike!! BTW why the shallow tom sizes??

  • haha i hate your whole face off

  • you should get a basspedal camera :D

  • meh i like boobs

  • How do his drums have no ring after he plays them? The sound stops right as he plays

  • @LogicVadoX Once you mic a drum and get tuning down properly, it changes everything.

  • That's bull shit. haha Mike you can play 1000x quicker than me around your kit with one hand and a single pedal... thanks for the lesson! gonna go try this right now

  • Yes!

  • this guy is a beast amongst beasts...and such a humble dude..

  • interesting. I always called a "paradiddle diddle" a "closed six". Learn something every day. This is hands down the most useful rudiment because if you split it in half, it's just the "swing" figure. You can also play that beginning lick in Lagrange without going linear, leaving right hand on hat and left on snare without doing the "alternate switchup" thing. Thanks for the vid.

  • plzzzzzzzzzz sirrr i dont know that you will read this or not .i am from india .i just wanted to ask that how many days and hours you spent for getting this much of speeed on singal paddle plzzzz sirrr pllzzz replyyy i hve cover your lesson double bass with one foot in 2months at 90bpm plzzzzz sir replyyyy i am a great fan of yourrsss plzzz replyy sir

  • are you crazy man? thank you very much!!!!!!!! this is what I call real teaching...

  • Mike I must confess you are the genius..........I really don't know of any summer camp probably i would like to come from Nigeria................i really feel this dude...You are an AWesOmE teacher.

  • Hey Mike, we've had a drum kit lying around in the garage for about a year and because of my newly found motivation i've decided to pick this instrument up. However, i have absolutely no idea on how to get started with the drums, any suggestions?

  • @kim59321 Hey, i know i'm not Mike, but maybe I can help? Just learn some easy rock beats, like the basics. then put some headphones on and play along to some of your favorite bands. i dont know what kind of stuff your into, but the song that really helped me was, "boulevard of broken dreams" by Green Day. Really anything would work. I hope I helped a little.

  • Thankyou. This sounds exactly like the practice i need. :)

  • I love what Mike says about making your weakness your strength. Thats what made Michael Jordan the best.

  • @rckystars maybe it's a Mike thing?

  • thank you sooo much!!!

  • do you use heel toe or slide technic ???

  • yo dog you be droppin some dope fills bruh

  • I just have a random question. I've seen through the years you've gone through a bunch of real nice drum sets. but, where do they all go? and what inspires you to replace them?

  • Hi Mike, you will do another contest???

  • This video is absolutely incredible. My drumming is instantly improved right now. Thumbs up foREVer Mike. You're a great teacher and an even better drummer. Wish I had the money to improve my weaknesses further with you man...

  • Hey Mike, cool exercise and great presenting!

  • ive been druming for a while and ive never seen such great ideas you gave me a whole different way of lokking and doing stuff around the kit

  • I hear ya rblira... I've thought often of selling MINE! :( but you need a good teacher and devotion to learn a craft. Drums are like that. I'm gonna keep checking out this guy's website.. maybe i'll learn betta to be a mo' betta drummer. good luck to ya rblira.

  • Hello Mike, I'm going to buy your book "linear drumming" because I think you're an amazing drummer. I am impressed by your speed and your dynamics. I already attended classes here in Italy, but I believe your online classes are a valuable support to develop your own drumming. Congratulations again! Greetings from Italy!

  • awesome dude...i'll totally add this to my faves...

  • Mike, I don't know if you will read this but I just want you to know that you're reall making a difference. Today I had a break through and you are totally responsible. I definitely hit a wall for awhile and you just demolished that shit. Thanks so much man, you're an amazing drummer and have an awesome attitude

  • @madtraffic9636: I read every one of these comments bro and I can't tell you how happy I am that you had a breakthrough my friend. That's so cool. Thanks for sharing it with me :)

  • @madtraffic9636 I am really impressed by his personality too. Not too often I see amazing musicians treating "less good" musicians like they are one of them. Regards.

  • @madtraffic9636 just wanted to say that your comment is so awesome! :)

  • Your bassdrum speed is over 9000.

  • @jae111192 its a double drum

  • @theelbranto Watch the video again, and this time pay attention. He points out very well in the video that he is not using a double bass pedal. His left foot is just keeping time.

  • i cant do this! damn. i am selling my drums.

  • Shubba hubba habba

  • u people r great u know?

  • Sick swing beat lol

  • You Rock My World Man!

  • You da man!

  • how the HELL do you kick that fast without a double? I would really like to know haha

  • @TJMax563 Mike, as do many other pros they use the slide technique. You can look it up on youtube there is a lot of vids. My only hint is to don't start out too fast and SLOWLY work up your speed. Hope this help!

  • @YoYoGuy951 Thanks man... It did help haha

  • You shouldn't be allowed to be better with one hand than most people are with 2. It's just hurtful and cruel.

  • My playing has improved by ten fold since I started with MikesLessons. And I have my first GIG on Drums on Friday!

  • Mike, thank you so much. I just started drumming and this is the single most helpful video that I have seen. Keep it up. You're an awesome drummer and I love your winning philosophy.

  • Lol! Nice face at 0:11!

  • Mike, I really want to know how you play so fast. I've been finding myself playing almost all of your fills at half speed. Like this instead of "1tl+tl2tl+tl3tl+tl4tl+tl" I've been playing "1tl2tl3tl4tl1tl2tl3tl4tl". I don't know if you have a video explaining ways to work on speed, I'll check your YouTube in a minute, but if you don't have a video on it, I'd love if you'd make one. Thanks!

  • @DeadLTBow muscle memory dude. Just keep playing the pattern(s) your working on over and over and over until you don't even have to think about it.

  • How are you so fast! :(

  • for reals man. I need to get my bass sounding like that. I gots a 22x20'' that I want to get sounding right. How do you do it? I heard a rumor you stuff the drum with old lettuce?? lol, God Bless bro!

  • Mike! I'm always blown away with your drumming and even more so by your teaching! your so humble and you make everyone feel like they might actually be able to accomplish these things you teach! Kudo's bro!...BTW, do you have any vid's on tuning? haven't seen one yet and would love to see what your approach is. thx!

  • Mike YOU ARE A MADMAN! I love it.

  • man u gotta try this take a paradiddle (RLRR LRLL) and switch it, that is,

(RRLR LLRL) And accent the first two hits which is the RR and LL of each one.

When u that down, make the first two hits a demi-semi quaver (32 second notes)

and work on that. But u have 2 change hands so u can get equal speeds on each hands... try it, it will work

  • "once again i was duked by the dangling dong of doo" LMFAO

  • dude that is sick! can you tell me how you eq your snare mic? if not its all good ;)

  • dude!! you'r my guru!

  • Lol... all the people who thought Mike used double pedal in his playing just got owned... :P

  • He is my new drum-god!

    Wow...Oo

  • This lesson can take us to a level superior! Thank you so much! We absolutely have to practise that

  • Haha, Mike's face when he hit the cymbal by accident at 5:45 :P

  • Drummers have the BEST way with words.

  • Dude mike we should hang out l8tr lol ;-)

  • How well do those acoustic panels work? What brand/type did you get? How thick?

    Thanks

  • I hope you stub your toe late tonight.

  • I can do the rudiment but I cant do it while keeping time on the hihat smh ima get it though thans for posting doc

  • mike how many drums do you have?

  • 2:42 ha

  • How do you get such nice quality out of those pg56's?! Sounds great man

  • @JakeLaLonde must have nice mic that records bass good ..and not turned up so loud it clips

  • Completely B34ST

  • *craps pants*

  • I still cannot believe he's not using a double bass pedal. That is insane speed for just a single bass pedal. Amazing!

  • i wish i had the kind of money to attend his drum camps....i bet its worth every penny though

  • ahaha.. he was like go down the set and i thought it would be easy but then when he did it i almost had to go change my pants

  • awesome lessons dude, you need to get your own site i would buy some of these

  • @RangersRlethal: I have another 300+ videos for sale on my site plus we offer Live Online Lessons as well. Hope ya check it out.

  • what kind of drumset and cymbals are you using?

  • im so inspired..thnk u so much for dat msg..someday my weakness will be my strongest!!!!!!! ur my mentor Mr. Johnston!!!!!!!!

  • I love that Paradiddlediddle with the Bass Drum and hands around the kit. I've got something to practice this week!

  • I wish my drum set sounded that awesome...

  • what was the paradiddle?

  • @DAMIVzombie It's a paradiddlediddle. It goes RLRRLL, if you lead with the right hand, and LRLLRR if you lead with the left.

In this exercise, the hand that is not the lead hand has the stroke replaced by a bass drum hit (F), so:

    RFRRFF

    LFLLFF

  • @sonorpaiste702

ya i later figured it out, thanks though. and good luck with your drumming if your a drummer :)

  • nice job

  • NOT thinking on studying things with the left hand?! hmmm, that's strange.

  • What EXACTLY are those cymbals??!!! I neeeeed em in my life!!!

  • Hi, nice vid!

Whats that sound dampening foam on the wall called?

  • This is probably my favorite Mike Johnston video. One because it is extremely helpful Tow because Mike owns his kit from 2:55 to 3:55 Three because it just sounds awesome. Oh and because Mike is a comic genius. "I hope you stub your toe late at night." made me laugh. still does
