I just got some drums not too long ago. I only have the standard 3 toms and a bass drum and a hi-hat. I still need to get a snare. And in my toms I have an unwanted echo in the toms..got any home- made remedy ideas for that prob?
My bass drum sped is appalling, no matter how long I've practiced it the next day week or month after, nothing. Growing to hate drumming is a shit experience
@sambrady92 Dont get discouraged, we all have those moments. Speed is built mostly by burst exercises. Set a metronome to a speed where you cant play consistent 8ths. play quarter notes on beats 1-3 & 8ths on beat 4. Once you can do that for a reasonable time, play the 8ths on beats 3 & 4. then move to 8ths on 2-4 & then to all beats. Then you just have to play 8ths for endurance. Once you have the group of 4 down, you can start the group of 2 on a higher BPM. Dont forget to chart your progress
@DaSilverandBlack Tune it tell you get the you get that sound or you can tune it relatively well and then use a dampener of some sort. Which ever one they both work
I have been playing drums for a little shy over a year and im a very fast learner and my first song i learned was "Chop Suey" by System of a down but i whant to go to really the ground up but i dont know where to start could you help me somebody??/
This could also help left foot speed and strength with double bass. Just switch by doing it right hand right foot down and then left hand left foot up. nice!
Hey Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with the world. For many years I've asked people "Do you give lessons?". Most reply no, or don't have the time. I am almost four decades of age and have been playing only a few years now. That has been on and off at best. My biggest problem has been being a southpaw and learning to play right handed. I felt until watching this video that I was the only one who had "weak links". Thanks Again!
"Linear Drumming by Mike Johnston" Is an awesome book, I'm not much for book learning but this one spoke to me!! tricky but once you get the hang of it.. Its addictive!! You go Mike!! BTW why the shallow tom sizes??
That's bull shit. haha Mike you can play 1000x quicker than me around your kit with one hand and a single pedal... thanks for the lesson! gonna go try this right now
interesting. I always called a "paradiddle diddle" a "closed six". Learn something every day. This is hands down the most useful rudiment because if you split it in half, it's just the "swing" figure. You can also play that beginning lick in Lagrange without going linear, leaving right hand on hat and left on snare without doing the "alternate switchup" thing. Thanks for the vid.

man u gotta try this take a paradiddle (RLRR LRLL) and switch it, that is,
(RRLR LLRL) And accent the first two hits which is the RR and LL of each one.
When u that down, make the first two hits a demi-semi quaver (32 second notes)
and work on that. But u have 2 change hands so u can get equal speeds on each hands... try it, it will work

@DAMIVzombie It's a paradiddlediddle. It goes RLRRLL, if you lead with the right hand, and LRLLRR if you lead with the left.
In this exercise, the hand that is not the lead hand has the stroke replaced by a bass drum hit (F), so:
RFRRFF
LFLLFF

This is probably my favorite Mike Johnston video. One because it is extremely helpful Tow because Mike owns his kit from 4:16 to 4:55 Three because it just sounds awesome. Oh and because Mike is a comic genius. "I hope you stub your toe late at night." made me laugh. still does
