i have a maverick 2.0 and was was wondering if its worth upgrading? i don't ride it real hard, but the rear shock doesn't quite cut it. i know the gila up front isn't great, but i can live with it. i'm 6'4" and right around 250 lbs. was just wondering if there is a decent affordable rear shock you could turn me on to, and if this bike is even worth putting money into. it seems like a solid frame with cheap hardware to me
@bbbbbum Hey, if you're already looking at upgrading the Fork and Rear Shock, I'd suggest investing in a better frame. The Maverick is a single pivot entry level frame. If not, look into a Fox Float R shock and maybe a RockShox Recon Fork (like the one I have in this video)
@preludedriven alright thanks for the advice i do appreciate it. i'll probably just ride her into the ground and search for a little higher end one while i do so. in your experience, would it be cheaper to build a decent bike frame up, or look for an already built one at swap meets, etc?
@LTP1996 Definitely get rid of that Tora! A good budget fork is the Recon Air...sucks too, I just sold a 2010 Recon for dirt cheap! If you can afford it, check out the Reba as well!
i love your bike i myself have a ironhorse maverik commuter and have had nothing but problems i use it as a commuter , would you recomend this as a commuter ? many thanks for posting this info.
This bike is great for off-road use. But for use on the road, It is heavy and the suspension will be ineffective for commuting on the road. If you're looking for a good commuter bike, I'd recommend looking for a Hybrid bike Thanks for the comment
sweet, 80 bucks is a steal. U should ask how old it is and if it's ever been rebuilt. Older models w/o a rebuild might have some issues.
The Yukon is rated as a recreational bike so I wouldn't recommend it. Trance has more suspension and slacker angles, so it'll naturally feel slower. You should check out the Anthem X if you get a chance (2009 model and up)
The Maverick is a good frame, but it's a single pivot design and heavy. It's main purpose is recreational riding, and I was looking for something in the performance XC category. The Anthem X has Maestro virtual pivot and weighs just under 5 lbs. I think the Maverick is about 8lbs.
Cool. There's a guy on MTBR that has a Float R on his Mav and loves it, although they're pretty pricey. I recommend u do what I ended up doing; sell the frame and buy a new/used frame w/ a Fox Float already installed. I got a 2009 Giant Anthem X w/ Fox Float RP2 shock w/ lockout.
haha wow that frame looks exactly like mine, i have a K2 sidewinder (sports authority) that I use for trails. It's single pivot with the Tough Shox in the back, and i just ordered an '08 recon 351 U-Turn for it and a WTB Dual Duty FR wheelset. i put on the stem from my specialized hardrock and the tires are the specialized resolution 2.1". more upgrades to come, probably brakes next. nice bike though, hopefully i can achieve that level of customization.
hey not bad man love the fork. seriously thinking about putting a recon on the quantum. I love how you transferred the crank and brakes. I've been meaning to replace the crank with a Hussefelt 2.2RG and finally having a bashguard.
Very nice bro.....Did you do the work yourself? Probably wont be riding in fullerton this weekend...I need to train for the Acura LA bike tour this May. So I will be riding my road bike more than usual. Hey why dont you check the Acura Bike Tour out. Its for anyone who wants to enter..(my first) talk to you soon bro.
Yup I love working on this thing lol! I checked out the Acura LA Bike Tour....looks like a lot of fun, but I've been off the bike for over a month now, so my stamina is probably down the drain haha! Take some pics / video!

I have this Maverick frame (white) with a 150mm travel front fork, and a ~200mm rear shock. It's an all-mountain machine.

nice setup, how much did all of that cost?
supersancho93003 2 years ago
another thing! do you have any weld problems or fame cracks? I dont...
but Im reading alot on how our model does eventually crack at the pivot point...
but then again their probably downhilling this XC frame...haha
xjoutkast 2 years ago
Never had any cracks on it when I had it. It's mainly cause if the spring isn't adjusted properly to your weight, and bottoms out during landing.
preludedriven 2 years ago
I actually found a fox float on craigslist...for 80bucks...guy bought it but doesnt ride anymore...
swweeeetttt....
how do you like the giant frames? I tried the Trance and Yukon and I just dont feel in control as much as I do on the ironhorse maverick

I will definitely check out the Anthem...
may I ask why you got rid of the maverick?
how much did you sell it for?

I agree... its a good starter frame...
been doing my research.
Im thinking of upgrading to a Turner Flux...

yup freeriding it perhaps...

Fox float R is exactly what I had in mind...
I was just wondering cause your shock look
longer than my stock shock...but I look closer and it just
that you have a bigger spring...mine came with a 600x1.63 yours looks like 550x38
so I take it the higher the number the smaller the coil spring? but then again mine came with a Fox Vanilla.
thanks again

I have the same frame but 17"
I was wondering what length and travel did you upgrade the rear shock to?
or is it the stock 6.5x1.5(165mmx38mm)?
I wanna upgrade and get rid of the stock Fox Vanilla...
thanks
xjoutkast 2 years ago
Rear shock came with the frame. You would have to get the same size shock for the suspension to work properly. Go with a Fox Float R
preludedriven 2 years ago
I have the same exact bike, color too...17inch
component setup a little different...
how do you like the 15inch? wait... how tall are you? you look a little to tall for a 15...
but then again more control I guess...
nice job with the bike..
xjoutkast 2 years ago
Yup I'm a little big for the 15". My previous frame was a 17.5", but my problem is with the stand over, so went with a small this time.
Thanks for the comment
