  • Even in England, Y is a consonant only when it makes the sound you hear in yellow or yo-yo. Y is a vowel when it makes either of the sounds you hear at the end of cry or penny. It is also a vowel when it is part of the vowel digraph ay as in maybe.

  • @Grancie48 And may I add in the middle of a word such as "syllable" or "cyst" as an "i" substitute. :)
