The cat took the kitten (and probably took them all one by one) to find another location for them. It's their basic instinct. Once you "invade" their territory, they will find another place where they can feel safer. Unlike mother dogs who usually growl on people who touch the puppies, cats quietly protect kitties by hiding and bringing them away from you.

@nusshan Look buster. I have been rescuing animals for the past 15 years and I have NEVER once had a cat abandon her kittens because they were handled by humans from the time they were born. While its true that a mother will abandon her kittens if it becomes ill, they will absolutely NOT do it if you handle them. She may however, obsessively clean them if you handle them too much, and potentially cause them to lick the hair clean off of them.

Yes, they probably shouldn't have handled them. But I remember being a kid when my cat had kittens, and I wanted to touch the cute things sooooo much!

The kids obviously had adult supervision, and the mother obviously still loves her kittens. I really don't see the need to overreact. The kids are as cute as the kittens. =)

Two days ago my cat had 5 beautiful kittens. Sadly one of them died from sickness and it was the runt. I couldn't do anything about it but now the kitten is in a better place. Anyway my cat lets me touch them and she gives them milk and such. Not all cats will do that though.

It is her instinct to nurture them apart from the rest of the family, until they are big enough to associate with the rest of you. Cats, dogs and wolves carry their young by the scruff of the neck. Kittens are not injured by it. Kittens are at more risk from your kids, while they are this small.

many years ago, my cat gave birth to 4 in next-doors old rabbit hutch, then came in and gave birth to the 5th on my knee. Only then did we collect the 4 from next door and put all 5 in a big basket next to my bed, lined with the clothes i'd had on when the mother gave birth on my knee.

At that point, the mother was happy to raise them their, and didnt move them again.
