@GavHarrison2112 I don't understand typical "metal" guitarists. Michael Romeo, Tom Hess, Christian Muenzner, Muhammed Suicmez. All incredible. Petrucci is insanely good and educated, but don't throw a low blow at metal just because of some douche, who obviously doesn't play, on YouTube. Technical death metal and progressive metal takes serious music knowledge and technical ability.
@stevegrierson Michael Romeo, perfect with phrasing and tempo pacing as well. How do people forget him. Or Tom frigging Hess, who is ridiculous (I think rusty was a student of toms at one point).
Don't these guys bore themselves shitless playing with no breaks nor phrasing. I thought fast passages were to compliment and add tension. Buckethead has the balance, as does John Petrucci, Malmsteen over plays, forget the last two; without speed Rusty Cooley has nothing, MAB is just hyper over indulgent. Guthrie Govan is the next generation of guitarist (no over reliance on overdrive, humble and accessible, anti hero persona, glorious phrasing and most importantly versatile)
@stevegrierson I'll agree with you on MAB (hate him) but Rusty's Older stuff was amazing. Only when he started solo work did his shredding get in the way of his composition.
@stevegrierson thats the skill my friend....!!! playing long passages really fast ..try it..u'll come to noe..the amount of fucking practice u need...!!! mr john petrucci suxx balls...buckethead dosent noe shit...!!!
@metalgodmaiden How, exactly, does Petrucci "suxx balls" ?? Considering his training at Berklee, dabbling in jazz fusion ("rock discipline" dvd) and classical, as well as his near flawless balance of speed/musicality in solos like "Spirit carries on", "hollow years", & "trial of tears"?? I mean if you personally dislike his musical style that's one thing, but objectively speaking, he's an incredibly accomplished guitarist to say the least. Far superior to typical "metal" guitarists.
@shamirjuustafar I agree, his stuff is very uninteresting, very very fast, and technically difficult, but very unappealing to me. Like, joe satriani and malmsteen are far better imo
@shamirjuustafar I do too. He shreds, but he barely puts any phrasing in it. It is just as when I hear Michael Angelo Batio...Fast, but almost phraseless!
I hate when people are always like speed isn't everything, or fast and nothing else, like come on seriously speed is cool and speed isn't everything true but neither is holding a note for ten minutes and looking like you are having an orgasm onstage while the note is being held
apparently grammar isn't either. if people like speed that cool for them. i agree speed isn't everything, but it is an element that makes a guitarist good.
@burningred73 totally agree with you on herman li and kerry king, those guys are literally just fast with no technique but rusty cooley has his technique DOWN. Watch any of his instructional videos and you'll see. But on latter 2 you said i couldnt agree more
@hughlaw1 I also agree.BUT Rusty Cooley absolutely has his shit down.He has the speed, the knowledge, the technique, and the Theory to put any other guitarist out there to absolute shame.I can say so because I have taken lessons from him. If you don't believe me,I can send you pictures, video, whatever you want. But when he talks about music it literally is unbelievable how much music theory he knows. The loomis and rusty Cooley interview.Loomis says "Oh thats only 4 frets away right? Rusty laughs.

and buckedhead is the best, he do a style of music, some buckedhead. all the guitarist you show just play in the same way (neoclassical solo and not with big soul)
it's only the thecnique or the speed, its the music first. And if you want some speed really clean -> muhammed suicmez
Batio is just the faster, he can't be called the best guitarist.
Petrucci is my favourite one, but i think that everyone likes a different guitarist. I heard someone that sayd that the best guitarrist of ever is the Greenday's one, for example. Or I heard someone that sayd that Herman Li is the best.
is it me, because everytime i see john petrucci with long hair he looks heavier and when he has short hair he looks skinny, is it because he has heavy hair?
Petrucci is not #1 in this list because jeanseb36 didn't see him live, when recorded in god mode, the recording equipment crashes, so people aren't able to see the full power of god. The famous guitarists in this world were born when John Petrucci played for the first time.
