This man is a legend. I feel blessed to have seen him in concert here in Edmonton. The day I saw him in the North Vancouver Starbucks and didn't tell him how great he was is a HUGE regret....Sorry Colin!
I have to agree he's got a lot of stevie influence in his playing. But I disagree on the closest thing to a living breathing stevie, that would have to go to Stevie's brother Jimmie Vaughan:P
yup...SRV helped make Colin James who he is. SRV heard James play out in Vancouver when he was out there on tour and basically convinced James to drop out of high school at the age of 17 and go on tour with him...James never looked back!
not true... at least the way I heard it. CJ had already dropped out of school and was living with his girlfriend & her parents. He got he call to open for SRV, at a time when SRV wasnt a big star yet. SRV did love the kid, and even gave him his stage name. CJ's real last name is Munn, but in SRV's texas twang it came out Mud! So one night SRV asked him his middle name and that night announced him on stage as Colin JAMES, his name sho'aint MUD!
CJ was definitely SRV's protege... SRV took him to Austin on his nickel and touted him around town, and eventually helped him get a record deal. Healey was also touted up by SRV, as well as BB King and Albert Colins. CJ & JH are totally different players, equally good in their own styles. Jeff was an 'all-time' player because of his technique - no one can play normally and reach what he could, it's not physically possible. It's a shame he was so material challenged, he was a guitar god.
there are plenty of blues musicians that are < or equal to C james. sure he is good, i could never play like that, not even close, but that is not my point. my point is that i would not put him in the top 8 ever, top 8...c'mon
Except for Hendrix & Santana being GROSSLY overated. CJ and Healey were extremely talented - Healey overall is probably the most versatile because of the reach he was able to span. Hendrix on his best day, could not have hung with Healey on his worst. No way in hell, period. And if you think so, you know nothing about playing music (not making noise or being a circus monkey, which Hendrix did both very well)
Well I agree that Hendrix & Santana are overated, but everyone's entitled to there opinions. As underated as Healey was, CJ's more underated then him.
yeesh, cut Colin some slack. He's a great musician, a class-act, and a rare blues axe-man in Canada. By the way, if you've played guitar for more than a month, you would know can't be a hack and pull off the tributes (a la SRV, Jimi, etc.) he does. Keep on rockin' Colin!
He loves the blues. It's in his blood. He plays with feeling and skill I might add. I have seen him play a few times. The first time I saw him I felt humiliated that I didn't even know who he was and had never heard of him. I was lucky enough to enjoy that event for free.
I actually spent some time with him when I visited vancouver in march, Id never heard of him but my uncle is a good friend of his and him and his family are lovely, friendly people, its only since Ive been back in the uk Ive had a chance to really hear any of his work.
Hendrix and SRV are all over this. I spotted Pride and Joy, Little Wing, ScuttleButtin, I'm Leaving You (Commit A Crime), 3rd Rock and then Keep on loving...
He's great!

@Dropkickacadian Actually SRV allowed Colin James to open for him on many occasions, and Colin's SRV and Healey were close friend's.
Especially Jeff Healey.

SRV had Colin James opening for him and said that he (James) was one of the best guitarists he had ever seen.
He is most certainly one of the finest and most under-rated players who have ever picked up a guitar.
Jeff Healey was often recognized by his peers as one of the finest guitarists of all time.
