I never understood how coffee and tea became basically opposites, like people could only choose one or the other. I, personally, adore both tea and coffee! Both are so delicious in their own way~
C... O... F... F... E... E... coffee's much stronger than tea. Young folk should leave it alone, for it makes them skin and bone. Better by far to be simply a drinker of tea.
@MarkPMus Obviously there are religious undertones (just look at the title), but that's part of the pun! Yes, religion has been notoriously used as a way to influence or control the masses throughout history, but used here it is just part of the pun. The overall message is that it would be a shame if the long history and tradition of tea drinking were lost on the youth due to coffee (starbucks anyone?) Long live history! Long live tea!
I think the film clip is about my favourite soccer (football) team Sydney FC. Noticing the cut aways and quick blends from black & white to colour. This is symbolic of our ability to change managers on an almost weekly basis. However, Crispian and the boys are trying to tell Sydney FC to take a walk down the path of enlightenment via tea and it's calming qualities.
I made comments on this vid a while back and was criticised, but there is definitely a deeper message going on. Watch the video. There are beady eyes in cameras at the beginning, a bloke spouting the benefits of tea drinking with a ciggie on (i.e. blatant hypocrisy), tea cups with 1984 written on them. Oh, and a non tea drinker gets his head hacked off and this is transformed into a teapot! It's about the dangers when powers use religion as a tool to achieve a political agenda.
@CandlesInADaze I clearly need to do a video on my thoughts on this song! I would have to write a bit about it. One thing is for sure, the "tea drinking" is an analogy for something far deeper. Candles, read my earlier points. It is not fair to consign me to the funny farm just yet!
@MarkPMus Haha fair enough! I just enjoy the song because it is about Tea (or it is on the surface ;P)..which is, in my opinion, by far the best drink ever!
@MarkPMus The eyes in the cameras, 1984, all those are just references to '1984' the book by George Orwell (shown here as the bloke spouting the benefits of tea drinking), nought to do with religion. Politics, yes, if you read 1984 you'll get that. Orwell was chosen to be the 'narrator' of this song by Kula Shaker because he wrote an article about how to make the perfect cup of tea.
@HarvestMoonStudios If you follow KS' religion you can't separate anything from God, even politics. It's to do with religion, tea is from our creator, and we should drink tea for the love of God! It's about using religion to achieve a political agenda. You should combine the messages from lyrics & video. Crispian was concerned that hardly any groups addressed the Bush/Blair issues of the day. Blair had tried to use God to sell the war with Iraq to UK. I'm sure that's at least part of the crux!
Drink Indian Tea.. or Ceylon Tea or British Tea on weekends Irish Tea ( lol).. Coffee causes Heart burn.. ulcers and what not.. Tea ROCKS.. Tea is Bliss.... Tea doesn't stink. DRINK Tetley or TATA but plz drink TEA
This song seems to me to be about religious bigotry - of the "our religion is better than yours" variety. Lots of (largely) unsupported "evidence" plus approval from the Almighty makes "us" better than "them". Unless 'they" join "us" of course. Not to mention the threat of the grim reaper at the beginning.
@mythicaljake and andyg3 - I do enjoy music for what it is - which is potentially extremely powerful. KS sing about Hinduism, with a lot of emphasis on the Bhagavad Gita - The SONG of love - a very sacred scripture. So to say "it's only a song" is to diminish the importance of music. Anyway, it doesn't take a genius to work out that this is an analogy - listen to the words!
the next release by the band will be out on 1st August, which is Yorkshire Day here in the U.K. It will be called, 'Eat Yorkshire Puddings', it is a protest against the Americanisation of pancakes.
The reason they say "1984" is because George Orwell, the guy featured in the video, wrote the book "1984," about totalitarian governmental control of society.
Fun novelty song and fitting video - the Rutles got there first with the tea references but then Kula Shaker are a bit like the bootleg beatles stuck in the TEA period.

"I know very well that I am in a minority here. But still, how can you call yourself a true tealover if you destroy the flavour of your tea by putting sugar in it? It would be equally reasonable to put in pepper or salt. Tea is meant to be bitter, just as beer is meant to be bitter. If you sweeten it, you are no longer tasting the tea, you are merely tasting the sugar; you could make a very similar drink by dissolving sugar in plain hot water."

The consumption of tea is on the rise in Sweden, maybe someday, a beautiful day, Sweden will consume more tea than coffee, hope for a bright future!
And also, this song is awesome :)
