Facial expressions are so important in establishing a rapport with others. The lack of facial expressions is a difficult one to overcome, facial disfigurement per se is more an issue of habituation.

My sister suffered hideous facial disfigurement in a car accident 10yrs ago. Struggling through intense pain & depression, finding any kind of purpose in life was tough at first. Her engagement ended (her fiancée proved to be a douche) & she became a recluse.
Now she’s going round schools with a state-sponsored ‘Stranger Danger’ Theatre group, playing the ‘scary evil monster’ that dodgy strangers could become if you agree to go with them. She’s happy enough, but it seems a bit wrong to me.
The fact that these people are treated badly, just because they look different is testament to the fact that humanity has a long way to go in terms of it's maturity. I would gladly befriend someone with a disfigurement. They are just people in different packages, get over the fact they look different. It means nothing.

That geezer Adam regularly came into a HMV I used to work in. At first I was quite shocked but one day he came up to me and asked me about a DVD.. After that I thought nothing about the facial disfigurement. Pleasant guy and quite knowledgeable on TV series!

When people stare at me in supermarket queues (facial nerve damage after unilateral AN surgery) I know that they are not meaning to be unkind, they are just interested.I flash them a quick smile, to make contact, but then have to look down before they notice the imbalance. I must admit, I do like to look at someone else with an interesting face myself, out of academic interest without wanting to be rude, so I do not take it personally when people want to look at me. I think it's quite admirable that in this video the people mentioned the ways they, as facially disfigured people, react to various awkward social encounters. Even mentioning that staring is a normal result of human curiosity.
There's a difference between someone taking a double glance, and someone being outright rude. They know this, it's obviously you that have issues with it.
It's definitely possible to be disfigured on the inside. Kudos on giving yourself as an example!

When people stare at me in supermarket queues (facial nerve damage after unilateral AN surgery) I know that they are not meaning to be unkind, they are just interested.I flash them a quick smile, to make contact, but then have to look down before they notice the imbalance. I must admit, I do like to look at someone else with an interesting face myself, out of academic interest without wanting to be rude, so I do not take it personally when people want to look at me. Fine line, though.

If the world looked like barbie and ken, the world would be a very bland place.
I hope people with disfigurements win over the media and are able to participate in the music industry and in film etc, anyone who doesn't fit into the 'pretty' box, seem to be hidden away, and it's completely unfair.

My daughter was born with a facial disfigurment. She brought beauty into my life that I could never have imagined. Watching her grow up she showed me what true courage was. I am incredibly proud that she came into my life and showed me the best qualities of being a human being. For those who think that putting her down would be doing her a favour, you are seriously misguided and need to take a walk through a childs burns unit, visit some War VETs, talk to victims of an acid attack and grow up!
