Wow....In doing vehicle recoveries with Miami PD we learned that the vehicle is at its heaviest right as it comes out of the water. At that point you lose all buoyancy and the vehicle still has quite a bit of water in it.
No excuse for his.....just total inexperience.....and he bottled it by jumping out.......if that crane was capable of lifting 14 tonnes on that jib length it was easily in radius.....but you need to go slow and let the water drain.....wonder if the safe load indicator worked or if indeed he had one......TOTAL DRIVER ERROR.......and.....what about the other crane .....why didnt they just dual lift it.
@aqueousone The bubble is to level your crane thats all.once you start working the crane bends and flexes, that is the last thing you should be looking @ when you have your rig in cowboy mode
A decent operator would never have lifted it, but even if he/she'd tried, would have let the load back down as soon as the crane started to struggle and tilt, thereby letting the crane sit safely until another plan could be formed to lift the bus safely. To just jump out and let the crane go is ridiculous when it would be just a quick operation to relieve the pressue on the crane.
Notice how the narrator says, "its impossible to imagine how the crane operator could survive the 30 foot plunge." Well the crane operator didn't have to survive the 30 foot plunge! Before the accident, "the operator jumped out, and ran for safety." LOL
To pull a big ass bus out the water, it's not just like a toy bus. First what ever who was hooking those rope, they should first dive in, and bust all windows out, and if possible, to open the doors. Second, To lift heavy load, crane allways should stay, with front, to the load, NOT EVEN BACK. ONLY FRONT! This is nice video to proove, than some complette idiots was on boat, and on crane. I can bet, that crane operator, he bought hes crane license for pork fat, and vodka. if he has one

@princessfbi Remember, he was going to have to set the bus down on the bridge, which may be too narrow to set up across it. He had to think about a 90° swing at some point in the lift. Tough lifting the bus from the end though. It would have been better to rig it level but I'm sure they thought that would take longer and be more expensive. Of course that's only if nothing had gone wrong. :)
28,000 lbs. 30 foot radius...that crane should have never attempted that lift. Picking over the side if the crane is not as stable as picking over the rear. Interesting that an RT crane is right behind the little truck crane, guess the truck crane operator got there first and thought he could make a fast buck. Too bad he didn't check his lift chart first.
I think what happened is that the buoyant force decreased as the bus was lifted, thus the weight of the bus increased the higher it got out of the water.
the crane operator was not in the crane when it started to tip, they operate using wireless hand controls from a box so they can see what they are doing. ooooops!
I agree he's a dumbass, it doesn't matter what he took into account - as soon as he started lifting he knew he was overweight and continued to lift. The "Bus" didn't pull down the crane with it, the crane pulled itself down attached to the bus.
obviously the crane driver didnt take into account that the bus would be filled with water adding almost half the weight on top of the buses actual weight. Oh davidx what the fuck is drounded??? you mean drowned, you weren't the crane operator were you???
I suspect the 30 ton hydraulic was cheaper to rent than a 45 ton conventional, which should have been used for this pick. First the basics, Rule one: how much does the load weigh, including the water factor? Rule 2: How far away is the center-pin from the furthest point at which the load will either be picked or set? Rule 3: How high must the load be lifted? Rule 4: reference the crane's load chart with these figures before you drive the rig to the job.
either the limit bell didn't go off, or (like a true cock) he just ignored it, or (like a real 3rd world worker) unplugged it, cos they make an unpleasant noise....
If the f***ing crane operator had time to jump out and run away from the crane (he ran for quite a while) why didn't he just lower the bus alittle bit back into the water to relieve some of the weight! You can tell it wasn't in the US, OSHA would be all over their a** =P
Lifting off a bridge is probably a factor in why they did not get a bigger crane. Bridge engineers don't like too much weight per truck axle, let alone the total weight of a crane and bus on 2 outrigger feet.
Engineers also plan for traffic jams to include a bridge full of Buses. During construction that bridge probably had a 50 to 60 ton rig pouring the concrete. The bused in the drink was a light weigh transit Bused, single axel, which could have been picked with a 45 ton conventional rig with 100 foot of stick.
Call me niave but isn't there a quick release to allow a load to be quickly and smoothly lowered. I've operated a davits that had a lever that allowed the winch to free wheel. sunking?
i drive cranes for a living and nobody is to blame but the operator. cranes are fitted with ;imits which will cut the power to the hoist up and boom back option. when the warning buzzers sound the crane stops even though you have the hoist lever engaged to lift the operator must have overriden the limit so he is the dumbass. i now drive towercranes as they are safer.
Ummm...at like 32 or 33 did anyone happen to notice the body that spilled out and was floating in the river underneath the door of the bus? Looks like the head of someone to me.
exactly. simple physics. shoulda been angled at the out rigger and front conterweights installed on the truck, or gotten one big enough to do it right the 1st time. buncha dumb asses!
He got outside of his radius.
