I've only been able to do this twice in my whole life. The only way for me to do any kind of level select on Sonic 3 is a) hook Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles and cheat on a vine or b) complete the game.

i am so sick oh hearing SEGA!!!! I had the mega collection on ps2 and all games debugged but i sold it for the ps3 ultimate version BIG mistake ultimate version does not have sonic and knuckles 3 the combined version mega did S3AK unlocks after so much game play then you do the debug and ur good to go ultimate only has 3 the vanilla version no way to combine them so the title code is my only hope but i give up 6hours later lol.

To get out of special stage 1 just walk into a red sphere and you'll go back to angel island zone.

I remember finding out about this code about 10 (maybe more) years ago on Gamefaqs, and I still couldn't get this code to work on my Genesis. Trust me, it's SOOO hard to do on the Genesis controller.

I use to do the one where you did 19-65-09-17 on Sonic 2, open level select on that, then swap out Sonic 2 with Sonic 3 (without turning off the game), THEN hit the reset button and BAM...Debug mode in Sonic 3!

If any of you noticed, at the end, when he's showing what special stage 1 does and how it screws you (;p) if you look up in the top left hand corner, the number of remaining blue spheres changes to some random number every time after the screen goes white. Just watch it and you will see what im talking about, and btw, AMAZING VIDEO, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

thanks for the "do it when the drums start" tip, i got it on my second try on my Sega Nomad, just using my thumb. prior to this, i've only done the cheat one time, and that was 15 years ago.

ps you can use debug on a save file if you game over after picking a level from the level select, return to the main menu and then hold a while picking a save slot.

I don't see what the big deal is. I got it on the first try, and have never had problems with it since.

Also, if you do Special Stage 1, get a red sphere in the time before you go to a different stage. It takes you to a level where you can do the start+a thing.

@Nanaangel585 What has worked for me is trying to get the " UP UP DOWN DOWN " in between the beats and then just repeatably mash the UP button for the "UP UP UP UP" as fast as I can. And I'm not sure if there is a game genie code, there probably is, but i have never looked for one.

@Uhf1000 I use the same thing, and i have never had this problem. If you are having these problems, try to download a differnet sonic 3 ROM. The one you have may be altered in some way.

My Sonic 3 Level Select is all messed up. When I was on Carnival Night Act 1, some of the enemies were glitched, I started at the wrong spot, and it said Marble Garden Act 2! For other acts for zones, I ended up underwater!

Also, when I try to do the blue sphere stages on Level elect, the game brings me to glitchy Desert Palace!

Two more things were that the graphics in the back turned black, then back to blue and that the preview of each stage in the lower-right corner were from Sonic 2!

@HonzTV thats is an option, and the one i used. i was doing this on Sonic's UGC. but the 360 controller's D-Pad is a pile of used syringes. because it is a disc, it is way too easy to accidentally press left or right. and sometimes they just don't even register, if you don't press it hard enough. i have gotten the code to work back in the day, on the origional genesis. i heard they are coming out with a new 360 controller, that can switch from a disc, to a plus. might be worth the 50 bucks lol.

WOW back in the days when I had a mega drive that cheat was bloody hard its a wonder why I never gave up. I use to do it with the joypad and was not too sure about the timing. But I have a HINT on how to do it using Emulator... I was watching your video and struggle to do it.. Then wat I did was turn the speed down to a pal version this means you don't to rush as much... I'm from UK so I use to play on a PAL machine anyway hehe. Also configure your keyboard buttons to big chunky buttons

@HonzTV I did it a few more times too. It seems you have to press UP continuosly at the end. I counted at least 6 times before the chime sounded. Also, you can get out of special stage 1 if you are very fast at pressing start and A. It's about as hard as getting the cheat to work.

An easier way to do this is with the game genie code AA6T-AAXC. Then you just press start on 1 player and it takes you to the level select. :)

Someone else said you can get out of special stage one as well. I tried it and it does work, but I haven't added an annoation to the video correcting it yet.

And about the game genie code, it may work, but some people use game consoles such as wii and xbox 360 where game genie and AR are difficult to obtain. if you emulate on a computer, GG / AR is an eaiser way of doing things.

@nelwyn2 I just use game genie. It's not worth it if it won't work. I hit the command too fast a lot of the time and it won't register one of the first four button presses. Game Genie all the way. If you don't have one you can use the sonic 2 trick as well.

Shit why did they make this Cheat so hard to do? I remember i used to spend hours trying to unlock this cheat when i had Sonic 3 for the Megadrive.

In the end i just figured that the cheat was fake, and ripped up the Megadrive magazine (long before the interent :D)

But i guess the cheat does work? Man if they didn't want people to cheat then why not include cheats, instead of making the cheat so hard to do?

@cristfc Well this game has a save feature so it was probably not meant for us to access. It's so hard because it's not meant for the common man. It just has some extra levels that aren't in it and a bonus stage accessible only there that is impossible. It seems more like a test. This was probably thought up before the save feature was implemented. It as probably going to be more like sonic 2 and S and K initially (one continuous game) but they decided against it later.

Actaully, if you do go on Special Stage 1. You can quickly move and hit a red sphere to loose. After it gives the score, the game will take you out of it!
