I think the idea parent is stern, but fair and supportive at the same time. He/she will laugh at good jokes, be there proudly during all of their children's major accomplishments. And always have their door open if the child wants to talk.

But at the same time, they don't spoil the child... They remain strong when the child throws a temper and don't put up with nonsense when the child is clearly acting out of line.
