You could tell B.B by the way he handles that guitar. He treats it as elegantly as he would treat a lady, as authoritatively as an angel would play a harp!
@MegaLegacy777 agree !! and bb plays 85% of his all his ending solo with the same riff without messing around, only greats bluesmen can do that, i really love that, sweat and warm that the way we love bb !!
This is why recording came to be. Otherwise this would be lost forever. And stufff like this is the basis of humanity. not idiotic "science". We will not ever again see artists this talented.
They, or BB screwed up the key, and he corrected it at around 1:00, but came in wrong, and it took til around 1:12 to get it sorted. I heard him call B natural....
This recording is from 1968. BB's sound, tone and feel was very much like this on his 50's recordings...where was PG then? BB set a standard way before any of the British players came on the scene in the 60's. PG had a great sound and tone but that is becasue he and others (Clapton, Beck, Page et al.) listened to players like BB and tried to emulate them...then there was T-Bone whom BB has said was a major influence on him...who in turn listened to Charlie Christian and so it goes...
Wish I knew what color this guitar is? I know it is one OLD guitar, not any of the black Lucille's that Gibson has made for his Signature model for so long. Does anyone KNOW which exact year and model this one is? So GLAD to finally see these come out for us all to see, THANKS to all those involved who did such a good job of putting these Ralph Gleason sessions on You Tube!!! KUDO's to "brucutu 30"!!
@biged6f9 it is an es 335 custom edition, circa 1845, i believe it was green with a purple headstock if i am not mistaken, it was also used by eddie van halen... i could be wrong though
@biged6f9 It's probably red, BB played red ES355's for several years. Earlier in the 60's he had a tobacco sunburst ES330 for a while, and also an ES345, but played the red ES355's for several years before the "lucille" model was created. I think they were all Lucille.
Ok, i am confused when i started listening to this from 1:10 it sounded like a song i have heard Peter Green play it's called "need your love so bad" (I am not mistaken right) for the licks or is it the other way around
PP:Great guitar skill from one of my favourite blues guitarists :) BB you make my day
@kisventak Yea man, i wouldn't be surprised, B.B. King was perhaps Greeny's greatest influence. You can hear that really sweet use of the major pentatonic that B.B. is known for in almost all his stuff!
its sad that over a million views on the first part but only about 300,000 on this second part, the second part is better in my opinion. BB King is such a better guitar player than most because his playing was honest and pure, he wasn't covering up his lack of musicality with fancy licks just to show off his technical prowess like many, all flash no substance, modern players do. BB King you are the "KING"!!!!!
Just a reminder... BB King was the one to invent string stretching to emulate the human voice before BB this was done with a slide, best of all he did it on heavy strings, it wasn't till Clapton came along and put banjo strings ( light gauge strings ) on a guitar that modern blues/rock guitar was born. That is why he is the King of the Blues, he invented it!
@jglickma bb indeed saids is one interview that he tried to emulate the human voice, he did an amazing job. BUt on one thing you are wrong. He is on of the inventers but not the only one. You see T-Bone Walker also bending strings, along with Freddie King and others.
I had a discussion with someone who said that BB King wasn't high on their list. His comment was in reference to his guitar playing. Albeit true that BB doesn.t do a lot of the more technical things that more modern guitarists do that isn't what makes him special. Its the feeling with which he plays combined with his amazing singing ability. Am I right?
Amazing. I'm still amazed how much legendary music came from the late '60's. Beatles, Hendrix, Aretha, Simon and Garfunkel, Yardbirds, Allman Brothers Band (first record was 1969), ... this. The list goes on and on. Just staggering...
Anybody else noticed the first tune is "Need Your Love So Bad" with almost identical licks that Pete Green used, but with different lyrics? (BtW, I am not suggesting BB took them from Greeny; quite the opposite, in fact!)
@Fatshead Haha actually, BB was probably influenced just as much by Peter Green as Green was by BB. BB came first, true, but he sang Green's praises more than perhaps anyone else.
I had Goosebumbs every time he opened his mouth to sing...Man..what a Voice!!! I'm so proud to be American, We produced so many Legends like him the world looks up to & envys.. Voice like his is a True National Treasure.
@kidistfan1 Yes, you gave the world jazz, blues, R&B, rock & roil. You'll have to excuse me if I don't thank you for for country (or at least modern country) and rap. Hey, nobody's perfect.
Yes Yes Yes! When BB play's people lisson. I seen him in the late 60's, mid 70's the 80's and the ninty's. The show in the 70's was soooo powerfull, I got so close I could lean on the stage, WOW! I looked him right in the eye's when he was soloing man oh man it was almost to much, To see the pain and love that was coming out of him thru his guitar, I will never forget it. I can still see his eye's and the look on his face, he is a blue's master. Long live the King.
this man is a f******* genius. he makes lucille sound like she's not made from wood, strings and hardware but of pure tone. the only other player that gets that sort of sweetness in the tone is bireli lagrene, but he does it with single short notes in long melodic runs, marking kind of a special point in his licks, BB makes every single note sound so important. just amazing, nothing but amazing.
i love this song, i love watching playing live, because you can see artists passion, love for playing, and his talent. Music video is just fiction, i can't tell whats real and what's not. This live play by B.B. King is one of best for me.
I'm not gonna read all the 303 comments to find if someone already wrote about it so sorry if this gets repeated. Notice BB wants to change the song in progress and they move it to G major but he is still in the old key for a moment then he gets through somehow. The same thing happened last Tue. Hard Rock Casino South FL 42 years later! It took him just a little longer to find the new key.
There are still great bands out there... You just have to look under a rock. Check out Eric Lindell, Ride the Blinds, Mike Welch... thats a good place to start.

Listening to these stuff reminded me of those days when it was 2007. It was the time when lots of kids around me felt that being 'emo' was cool.
To think about it, the real 'emo' stuff are stuff like these. I suppose BB King was speaking for his people through his songs.
Its quite ironic to hear stuff in major key and a joyous melody that comes with lyrics full of complaints.
It sounded like someone accepting his fate of hardship and couldn't do anything about it. I really salute such people
