This is very moving for me. When I was 6 - I'm now 54 - my Dad gave me a wind-up gramophone to play his 78s. This was one. Time goes by - the gramophone broke - we ran out of 78 needles - I grew up and Dad died 3 years ago. To hear this song again brings Dad and my childhood back to me so strongly. And it makes me wonder so much about Dad as a young man, long before he met my Mum...why did he warm so strongly to this piece?
I can remember T.V repeats of Jack Hylton's 'She Shall Have Music' (Channel 4, 1992), Harry Roy's 'Everything Is Rhythm (Channel 4,1989).Dance Band Days on Radio 2 with the late Alan Dell , all watched and listened to by this 1930's crazy kid!.
Hear, Hear 85scampi, it's great to hear from another youngster who enjoys these great 78s. Let's just hope that the BBC will wake up and realise that we need more entertainment like this. I'm sick of hearing music which only goes back to the 50's!
Long live the Great British Dance Bands, and lets hear more of them.
