  • MG42 is mostly better

  • I think the MG-42 has too high of a firing rate. It burns through ammo.

  • I´d rather be a Soviet Soldier defending Stalingrad with a SG-43 on wheels then a german Soldier defending Berlin with a MG-42..

    Why?

The SG-43 Fits perfecttly in a urban enviorment, it had wheels, easy to hide and has great stopping power.

But saidly the SG-43 dind't find action in Stalingrad

  • MG-42 is the best of the best

  • Awesome sight, you shooting the mg 42 from the hip and shoulder, but was this a real option (it is still some 16-18 pounds loaded) in combat? Can you still get a nice grouping at 50-100 yards (we are not talking sniper rifle accuracy here ofcourse, just real world practical accuracy)?

  • @lennardvogelaar Yes, good groupings are possibe, it really suprised me too.

  • @C2builder im wondering what is the accuracy on the mg42 at ranges with the tripod say like 500m, a good frend of mine in the norwegian army hwo lead a mg team in afganistan said that a mg3 have a grouping of 30 cm at around 5-600m and im a little sceptic of what he said 30 cm at that range seems strange for a "inacurate" mg family even betven the changes of caliber

and if 30 cm at that range isnt good for a machine gun feel free to correct me

  • @C2builder Great video. You should also try to compare the m60 to the mg42

  • Machinengewehr 42 was (and is always) a machine gun example.

It is build today under the name of "MG3" (MG-1 is the same at original caliber, MG-3 is at OTAN caliber, 5,56mm I think).

  • @Erwin0859 MG3 is in 7.62NATO (7.62x51mm), MG42 is in 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm).

  • IMHO, SG-43 is really let down by it's primitive wheeled mount. It really hindered its mobility and versatility.

  • I enjoyed the comparison. They in fact did face each other with these very weapons. They being the Russians and the Germans. Thanks for putting this video together and sharing.

  • As WWII German and Russian weapons compare in general the Russians could probably put 3 MGs into service for the same relative financial effort as 1 MG for the Germans.

  • @C2builder I feel like you gave the MG-42 unfair points for reloading, saying that the SG-43 needs to be charged after loading it, but the MG-42 needs to be charged before loading so dosent that cancel it out?

  • @1971Chevelle502 But the Sg43 can't use a belt tab while the feed cover is closed. The top cover has to be opened first, the bolt has to be in the closed position, the belt placed in the feed claws, the top cover closed and then the gun is charged with the handle. See my point?

  • @C2builder Ohhh ok. Thanks for answering

  • Nice video, very informative.

  • mg 42 is the best some countries still use it (by the way mg3 is the better version of the mg42 dont mix them up)

  • This is a excellent series. As good as "Mail Call" firearms comparisons or any of the rest..

  • sg 43

  • which one is better, 30.cal machine gun or a mg42, plz tell me.

  • by the way what does c2builder mean?

  • @halofreak703 C2 or Class 2 is a designation given by ATF for a person licensed to build NFA (machine guns) weapons, so, C2 + builder = C2builder.

  • Mg42 .... wow. Scary gun.

  • great vid

  • good video

  • well done

  • Russia was worse armed than Germany, but but in the russian army had more personal courage and dedication.

  • @PoMaIlIkA and the treat of death at the hands of thier oficers....

  • @TheAlexagius It is just a common exaggerated stereotype about brutal soviet officiers shooting their soldiers. Many of those officers were actually 20 years old boys themselves. And by the way officer in any army is allowed to shoot his soldier during battle if he is retreating and not following officer's orders.

  • @TheAlexagius what in civilian life seems awful, is ordinariness in the war (sorry google translator)

  • The ironies of war. Most German weapons were far more complicated than Russian weapons, and yet, as seen in this video, the German machine gun seems to be less complicated than its Russian counterpart.

  • the german MG42 was also called "Hittler's saw" because of it's rate of fire :D

    am i right ?

  • @AndreiGrozeaCS you are right. the mg42 was also called "Singende Säge“, "Knochensäge“ or "Hitlersense".

  • GERMAN WEAPON POWER

    YEA!!!

  • @karltheawsum1 He just showed it on the video - if you don't believe it look up some ww2 combat footage

  • 9:16 and after is BOSS!

  • PURE BADASS

  • Nice work sir, well done!

  • i think the rpm of the mg42 was around 1800 rpm...

    mg45 had like i think 1400-1600

and mg3 has like 1200 rpm

  • @Corey91666 Nope, other way around. The MG45 was 1800rpm, MG42 @ 1200-1400. MG3 is 900-1200.

  • @C2builder

    That's right.

With a little modification, you can get with the MG3 the same round per minute like the MG42.

The Bundeswehr just downsized the MG3, because of martial law (no cruel weapons), that you don't have the "Hitler Saw" effect.

  • @phel55 Well im certainly leraning a lot by watching these videos. However my question would be, isn't the point of war to kill your enemy? If you ask me a mortal wound would be worse than death if your suffering or bleeding out. So this "Hitler Saw" effect that you mentioned sounds like nonsense to me. Although WMDs arent being used, they are being produced by most countries in these times, and they're complaining about the caliber of a bullet? I can see the up sides to having smaller caliber.

  • @airraverstaz a common misconception. the aim in war is actually not the death of enemy combatants but their 'neutralization'. neutral means not fighting anymore. if you manage to wound an enemy you can take more than just him out of the fight as it will take two or more personel to take care of the wounded man. geneva convention is a much maligned piece of deceptive nievete. people trying to make war less evil. bottom line is you are throwing a very fast stone at a hated enemy...

  • @C2builder

what is a MG 45? never hear about it?!

  • @C2builder

Nice vid, but for Fire Suppression you didn't take into account the MG42's impact on morale. Enemy troops would take cover when they heard an MG42, even if it wasn't firing at them. Also another point, you did field stripping, but not reliability.

Very good vid. Go German engineering.

  • If every Axis soldier were fitted a MG42, Allies would've their asses kicked. :D

    Awesome vid.

  • @C2builder you did a excelent work!!!! my respects for you man :)

  • WHEN DO YOU CHANGE OUT THE BARREL ON THE MG-42?

HOW MANY ROUNDS CAN ONE BARREL TAKE?

  • Nice video! Thanks for uploading! A thing that can be included in the evaluation is the shield that usually comes with the SG-43 and protects the crew as well as the price per item (partially discussed in the parts evaluation).

  • @evgeni2266 Thanks! The SG43 mount shield as well as the shield used on the Russian Maxim did not stop AP armor pericing ammo.

  • @C2builder The shield that I have is 1 cm thick and can easily block every bullet from a rifle or an MG. It is vulnerable to the rounds with calibre higher than 12 mm (e.g. anti-tank rifle), but the shield itself is quite heavy and difficult to transport.

  • @evgeni2266 I'm not doubting you but we had a spare Sokolov shield a few years ago at a MG Shoot and used black-tip 30-06 AP rounds that punched holes in the shield all day long.

    Thanks.

  • @C2builder Obviously we don't have real US rounds but we do have authentic WW2 German rounds and they don't do much. Besides most of the ammo that was carried around was not AP but normal rounds for K98.

  • @evgeni2266 there were lots of special german ammo. The basic was the 7,92*57 S (Spitzgeschoss) the AP was called Spitzgeschoss mit Kern it can penetrate 15mm at 100 m the, 7,92 mm Patrone S.m.K. -v (Spitzgeschoss mit Kern -verbesserte) was even heavier (17,5mm) all of these rounds can used in any weapon what used 7.92*57mm round

  • I always see MG-42s with a Tripod in contemporary times, but I want to know how often was the tripod used in WW2? Was it used more in Offensive or Defensive situations?

  • didn´t you get a boner from firing that beast from the shoulder?

it certainly looks awsome! i would so love an exo skeleton with one mg42 on each arm and a buttload of ammo on the back :-)

  • Great video, thank you for sharing

  • Both equal fire suppresion? Not really, the MG-42 had almost double fire rate compared to the SG-43

  • @falley11 Fire suppression is not the rate of fire but the ability to lay down a continuous volley of fire from a single weapon. Any belt fed gun with the ROF over 600rpm is considered a good fire suppression weapon. FWIW.

  • I Enjoyed this guys video and also like the fact that this guy has balls, he can stand up and fire that sweet thing if he even wanted, the only problem though is the barrel MG 42's usually needs to be replaced after 150 rounds....

  • thanks for the vid man. Now I feel like I know a LITTLE bit more than just a normal video game kid of the 21st century. Never heard of the Soviet MG, MG42 is a legend that anyone who is interested in guns has atleast heard of! :D

  • That was a kick the face for FPSRussia.

  • The MG42 is a example for german craftmanship :-)

  • compare mg 42 to the american browning 30cal?

  • @gorgonzo1a The 30 cal was a Platoon Support Weapon the MG42 was a Section/Squad support weapon and a Platoon Support Weapon. A true comparison would be to a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle)

  • ^^ you are realy great

  • WTF!!! OH man that MG42 what is the price of one of them? I want to buy that gun. it is freaking awesome. Regards from Mexico!

  • mg 42 is way better but rusian soldier is better combine the two undefeatable

  • that was very in depth

  • Although Max had a lot of drawbacks: the high weight and reliable transmission.

But MH had drawbacks: it was too high rate of fire, its barrel overheating and had to be changed, which has often been a suicide in combat. And the cartridges ran out quickly.

  • great vid, but do tell me why we need to change the barrel in machineguns?

  • @zerobeo When the machinegun barrel over heats from the fire rate...

  • @zerobeo

Simple reason: The barrel will get very hot, if it´s too hot it will melt! That was a problem about the MG-42 because it has an incredible high rate of fire. You had to wear special gloves to change a overheated barrel.

  • @Melder92

    Not MELT, buddy)

The muzzle is gettin' wider and bullets go not that stright)) It's simply loosing precision when too hot.

  • Very interesting video, thank you.

  • Of course the MG42 is vastly superior - it's German! Russians build crap, and always have. That is why the battlefields of the world are always littered with destroyed Russian weapons.

  • @AgentPepsi1

I thought it was because the Russian weapons never break down and last forever.

  • @Rilurio your right in one sense lol, russian wepons are the most reliable, ak47 is the most reliable assault rifle in the world, can even be fired after being submerged in water, revolutionary for it's time.

  • @AgentPepsi1

SG43 is WAY cheeper to produce than MG42. About 5 times less work, man - and that count in war time, you know. While MG is definitely a piece of art, SG is a robust and inexpensive work machine.

Ever heard of SVT40?)) What a masterpiece for the time; but way too expensive - and too complicated to maintain in field. So by 1942 the production was stopped in favor of more simple items; do not forget that there were up 5 000 000 soldiers in each army in a moment facing each other, man

  • I need to see more shoulder firing from the MG! It's a must-have.

  • Germany came very close to defeating the Soviet Union, the Soviets couldn't produce the armaments, the production numbers given to stalin from the factories moved from western russia because they were being overrun by the Wehrmacht, were complete bullshit, Russian tanks were definitely not as good as the german ones excepting the T-34 early on, and getting them to the front was a collasal effort considering the Russian road/rail infrastructure was basically non-existant. Loss ration was 1:3.5-4

  • @EtriusQuill

Early in War Germans had nothing comparable to either T-34 or KV.

Later when Tiger and Panther appeared they got an upper hand - until new T-34-85 and KV-85 which were almost a match. But with introduction of IS-2 USSR was ahead again; than there was IS-3))

Simultaneously, a whole new family of tanks was launched - t-44(1944) – which was a base for t-54 (1947) – a new standart in tank building industry, actually))).

About production figures: USSR produced MORE tanks than Germany

  • What about accuracy? Surely that must make a difference?

  • Great Video,

Though I feel you may be comparing apples to oranges with these two weapons, each was built by a different country to fit a specific need thereof, to say that one is better than the other...well....

  • @nytcg You are forgetting however that these two (the best each country had at that time) did face each other on the battlefield so what you see in the comparison is exactly what each side faced on the merits of each gun.

  • @C2builder i totally agree with you

  • @C2builder Hold on a minute, SG-43 never replaced the Maxim maschine gun so SG-43 isnt the best what USSR had at the time.

  • @C2builder why did you give 10 points to the mg 42 for loading? you still had to charge the bolt before loading it saved no time at all

  • @realogre32 You have to raise the top cover on the SG43 to load the belt, you don't on the MG42.

  • @C2builder ya but you did open the top cover to load the mg42 and don't you need a starter tab to load it with the top cover down?

  • @realogre32 You are correct, I didn't have a starter tab for that belt or I would have shown how it was done. So, the MG42 can be loaded faster.....correct?

  • OK now I pissed, some boys have all the toys. Not fair

  • MG-42 vs M1919

  • Changing the barrel as in chuck away or to clean/refurbish?

  • @MrGuvEuroman when an mg has had more than 200-400 rounds put through its barrel it starts to over heat and expand when this happens your mg looses accuracy and you run the risk of shatering the barrel or warping it so in the midst of a large gun fight barrel changes using asbestos gloves was very common place and usualy done with great urgency

  • @MrGuvEuroman as in let it cool off so you can keep laying down accurate fire.

  • Germany lost due to getting to much enemies, had they gone for russia in the beginning instead of some non aggresion pact, they would have crushed them cuz russia sucked in both WW1 and WW2, they didnt have enough ammo for their troops tactics were laughable, something like what a caveman might come up with, the reason they won were because they joind allies and got weapons from usa and such and because they probably rethought their strategy after loosing so badly against the finish people

  • @Dorzay

You definitely have to read what German generals write about war in the East.Try reading Friedrich von Mellenthin or Günther Blumentritt or Erhard Raus; they all admit that fighting Red Army was way to harder then war in the West with Poles, French or Britts. Read more serious German sources about Russian tactics and realise that Hollywood movies are not the best source for history data.

  • Germans weapons performed very bad in Russia, there was a reason why Germans use captured russian weapons like SVT-40 wich later was copy for G-43, PPSH, and T-34, so i quess they not always wins mr ZIKACS51. And last time i cheked whey lost the war.

  • @DinoPal technically they didn't copy T-34 they only copied the sloped armor frontal armor design, other than that they went in entirely different direction for their tank design. I don't recall them copying PPSH but they did adapted the captured PPSH to their use, i do not recall if they ever used PPSH design for other subsequent weapon in their inventory that i know of.

  • @IonoTheFanatics

    The did not.

They actually did not use sub-machine guns too much at all, BTW. Main weapon of the infantry was K98. Each company had 132 K98, 47 pistols, 16 MP38/40 and 12 MG (THAT is a lot).

StG 44 was to be adopted much wider than MP - but was not due to complexity and therefore low quantity of the thing. But it was a great weapon - for peace time, one should say.

  • 2 great weapons from 2 great countries

  • Fantastic appraisal of two weapons that served formidable adversaries, especially - it has to be said - the beautifully designed MG42. Your stand up demonstration of this frightful weapon was a real eye opener!

  • Damn those Germans! They know how to engineer.

  • @Jusarius83

    Yes we do.

  • Great videos, thx!

  • That Russian SG-43 looks very much like the lovechild of a PKM and Kord

  • Hi! Thanks for the interesting video. There is a small mistake. When you are extracting the barrel from MG-42 it's so hot, that it is impossible to be done without special gloves or other kind of device. So in that point MG-42 needs tool as well...

  • @Springator In a combat situation after the extraction is initiated, the barrel can either be allowed to simply fall out itself, or be quickly removed by lightly gloved hands. I havent heard of a gunner who goes without a pair of simple leather gloves.

  • thanks for making a video comparing these two awesome guns...really enjoyed the mechanical aspects that you provided

  • @rikohp23 Asbestos gloves were standard kit for the MG42 gunners mate and spare barrels were field carried in a pressed metal case so readily available. Used barrels were left to cool and could be used again until worn out. Although the MG42 bolt was complicated a spare assembly was carried and replaced in one piece for the old to be cleaned and repaired later, In modern combat superior if expensive weaponry is the preferred choice

  • MG-42 just looks more menacing.

  • MG 42 awesome...

  • MG-42 fires 1200min. 20 rounds a second. Only single barreld machine gun to do that. I got for the german mad.Lol

  • @broodmaster5

The only infantry machine gun; for German MG 81 did 1500-1600 and Soviet ShKAS - up to 1800; UltraShKAS and SN- up to 2800 - with single barrel.

  • Tommy Gun VS AK 47

  • @KeMuLish

Are you saying an old SMG VS one of the world best "Assault Rifle"?

My lord, do you play COD or something.

  • @KeMuLish thats stupid, the tommy gun is a smg where as the ak 47 is an assault rifle. A better comparison is tommygun vs ump45 or ak47 vs hk416.

  • thanks for that, nice to see it being fired from the shoulder. Not seen that in a german video before

  • mg-42 is the thing, this beast mowed down your grandpapa san...just hearing the bursting sound made any soldier runnin and buried their own asses deep in foxhole

  • Better test is compare SG 43 to ZB 53(or MG 37(t)), MG 42 is other category, than SG 43 Gordjunov...

  • Is this really an MG42 or a Yugo M53? It has a slower rate of fire then the original. I think this one lands on about 900rpm (just like the Yugo)

  • I have my own sg 43 but i think that mg 42 is the best machinegun in history :)

  • where do u get these toys?

  • 9:30 so badass...god that gun is a sexy beast

  • 09:05 - Chuck Norris moment.

  • Lets face it, if you gave the Russian WW2 Conscripts an MG42 how long before it stopped working? Too complicated, Too expensive and difficult to build. The SG-43 is the 'better gun' for the Red Army.

Also another good test would be MG34 vs DP 28

  • @cryhavoc999 nah, the mg42 was know for being easy to handle and for being simple. I can use it, im 16...

  • @cryhavoc999 nah, the mg42 was know for being easy to handle and for being simple. I can use it, im 16... But yeah, construction would be difficult for the Soviets.

  • @Riksosten95

If your dad handles it for you, buddy.

And do not even try to compare how much you could shoot - and how much they did in Eastern front. And MG was NEVER know to be easy to maintain - only to shoot from.

Also, construction was not DIFFICULT for Soviets - see SVT-40, for example. It was too complicated for war time.

  • how heavy was the recoil of the MG42 when you shoulder fire it ? looks like you handed it pretty good

  • Hey C2builder,

First of all, you sure have some very nice weapons!

Love your movies. And the moment you fired the mg42 from the shoulder.... Freaking NICE!

Keep up the great work and keep those movies coming!

    Greets

  • I enjoyed this "mythshooting" video very much.

I didn't knew mg-42 could be used in assault position (dai blame hollywood).

What i knew from my grand-gradpa, is that russian soldiers often replaced standard tank machine gun with captured mg-42 (that kind of speaks for itself)

  • very good responsible comparison i learned a little

  • Great Video. The Russians always preferred making guns that can do 70 percent of it's enemies at half the cost.

  • great video

  • Another great video! Very informative, you really know your stuff. I think the Russians had so may of the SG 43's,thanks to the all out state production for the war effort. Where as Germany still had a large amount of industry manufacturing goods for the domestic market, even towards the end of the war. Great posting.

  • whats with the shooting in the background?

  • i love ur ww2 guns cause i like guns

  • Great video. The mg-42 is a classic.

  • I have one simple question. WHERE ON EARTH DO YOU GET ALL THIS??

  • I really enjoed your Video, even if its neraly 2 years old. :)

  • In battle. An Sg 43 would dominate an Mg 42. The MG may out perform it, but the portability and higher power of the Sg would open the possibility of non stationary firing. In the right hand the Sg 43 would be a better choice.

  • MG-42 fired from the shoulder?! HELLS YES!!

  • another great video by c2. Thank you C2.

  • hmmmm 7.52 or 7.62 ummm bigger bullet please thank you

  • @KhaosxGwS MG42 and MG53 chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92x57), MG3 is chambered in 7.62NATO.

  • I think mg42 can fire 1400 rounds a minute... that's cool compared even to the minigun...which i think can manage 5500 a minute & that thing has 6 barrels compared to the mg`s 1!

  • @student1276 yea but the minigun needs 6 or else it will over heat just one. the mg 42 also has to interchange barrels where as the mini gun does not have to because it has 6

  • nice work

  • loved it but ummm how does the MG 42 not provide superior suppresion it loads quicker can barrel swap quicker and has an astonishing rate of fire you cant even hear the recoil come on man

  • great show! Very informative!

  • love the german weapon and country!!!GO GERMANY!!!!!

  • what about the hot barrel on a MG-42 ? ^^

  • @snijkens91 In the danish army we had a special glove for that

  • @ekhaat

yes, it was made of asbestos-fibre

  • @snijkens91 Asbest Handschuhe, asbestos gloves for that

  • MG 42 Is a very nice mechine gun

  • The MG-42 continues to serve in armies across the world with an upgraded version and is now designated the MG-3. The MG-3 is basically the same gun with the MG-42 in terms of design it differs only in the metal alloys which are used and it weights 1.1kg less than the MG-42. Also the caliber of the MG-3 is 7,62mm. The fact that the same design is still in use today shows the MG-42’s advanced design for its time against all opposition.

  • @SsiolisP the m60 is very similar to the mg-42 the german weapons inspire the designers to created modern weapons, the ak 47 is based on the stg 44

  • I would love to hear machine gunner stories from both sides when it came to how these guns were treated in the heat of battle. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these tales will never be heard.

  • Soviet Union has much more weapons, there were 4 machine guns, the germans had only 2

    Soviet: DP,SG-43,DSHK,Maxim,DS-39

    German: MG-42,MG-34

  • @citizen112ify

Do not count machine guns by models; Germans used Maxim (which is actually american, 1883) as well (MG-08). BTW, German version of Maxim is considered as most technologically sophisticated of all Maxim variants all over the world.) Germans also used Schwarzlose, ZB-53 MG 37(t); and ZB-26 and ZB-30 ( MG.26(t), MG.30(t)) were in production until 1940 under German rule in Czechoslovakia.

But still MG 42 was the deadliest weapon of them all, indeed; just too expensive for war time.

  • very well done!

  • MG42 for life. Best Machine Gun of all time in my opinion. Proud Half German here! :)

  • @TaZ101SAGA huh, must admit you're right. Proud grandson of a partisan, whos grandpa fought germans in former yugo, here :)

  • i like it

  • I loved of the sound of the mg-42 It sounds amazing

  • i would have given the loading category a draw, both had to be cocked before firing either way, and neither has any complications in the loading procedure

btw if there's a strong enough guy behind a gun, any gun can be called controllable

  • how did the SG43 get 110 points???

  • Nice Video and nice guy who informs without trying be a badass. Like your videos cause they are more like a documentary and not entertainment. thx a lot for this C2builder and keep on doing vids =)

    greets from germany

  • @Moneymaker1939

    i doubt that srsly

  • Got to be one of the best videos in any category. Simple, informative, no nonsense. Thanks.

  • @1killerbaby theyre one step ahead of you. Check out the metal storm. ONE MILLION ROUNDS PER MINUTE!! no lie

  • No way russian guns are better, Ak-47 is reliable thats ALL, German weapons By Far, they literally Revolutionized weapons, made the first assault rifle.... come on know

  • @raedcore the ak47 is a almost complete replica of the MP44 the germans used in WW2. The germans got it 60 years ago. And russians still use this technique. And its still good.

  • @raedcore the ak47 is a almost complete replica of the MP44 the germans used in WW2. The germans got it 60 years ago. And russians still use this technique. And its still good.
