Any pro with a record like Quarry had a shot. Ali's style was dance away and jab strong, not good for Quarry. Dont take anything away from Quarry, in a time of historic boxers he was in the top 10, thats hard to do. Frazier said he probably would have been champ if he didnt cut so easy. Foreman admitted he ducked him. Quarry mixed it up wiith some of the best fighters of all time. Ali knew Quarry has a shot, any pro ranked #2 at the time had a great shot.

Ali's 1st fight in 3 1/2 years; more like a sparring match. Very rusty, but Quarry still had trouble slipping the jab. Ali picked Quarry because he had a similar style to Frazier and was built low like Joe. This was a warm-up for Ali. I believe Quarry was the #1 contender at the time of this fight. As for whether Quarry would have won if not cut, that's crazy talk. He never had a chance. They fought again 3-4 years later and Ali had to make the referee stop the slaughter.

Holmes in his prime would be no match against Ali when Ali was in his prime(Holmes wasn't even a boxer in Ali's time Sparring partner for Ali often gettting injured). That is some serious defensive boxing by Quarry at 4:29 and you could tell that quarry had a lot of ring experience in that. You don't learn to slip punches like that over night especially coming at you with that speed. He made him miss every punch in that combo series.

To me, Ali seemed to excel at least partly because he threw COMBINATIONS.

Follow up one punch with another, and another, don't stop and admire the one you land.

The only time I saw Ali do that (admire a punch he'd thrown) was when Foreman was staggering around the ring and on the way down and Ali declined to hit him again.

Wow. We can see Quarry's greatness in display here. At 4:26, he ducks 7 punches in a row. That's pretty awesome when the man throwing those punches is Ali. Quarry is really doing good in the first 2 rounds. He lands a lot of good punches.

Ali didnt just jab people.... its not that simple... his accuracy his speed his time was almost always superior to his oponnent. The other guys dont jab back... because unlike Ali they couldnt see the oportunity or perform one quick enough even if they did see it.

60s Ali- relied on speed, co-ordination, reflexes, on smarts sometime and accuracy not to mention power and split second timing.

70s Ali- with his speed a bit diminished he had to rely on clinching, defensive tactics, some of his foot speed, hand speed, and had to rely on smarts more often since he had lost a it of his split second timing and reflex.

Either way Ali is great to have come back after such a long layoff and beat a contender he adjusted his style for these times

This had a faster pace than I remembered. Ali played this fight off very coyly. In reality, he respected Quarry alot and was in very good shape. Ali won Round 1, but the second round was pretty even. Quarry had a lot of heart.
