@captainofthetitanic Diesel was another but several of the engines were not meant to be characters from the books but just friends of Thomas'. James was a SR loco a 2-6-0 and not Oulton Hall that was painted up as Hogwarts Castle.

Unfortunately you'll never get a true Thomas, James, Edward, Toby or Gordon unless you've more than £10m to build replicas. The locos they are based on were all scrapped.

I'm a truck driver. I haul one of the trains from state to state. From NY,FL,CA and everywhere in-between. The reason Thomas doesn't have a engine in him is due to weight. He weighs 35,000 lbs empty. My truck weighs 40,000 empty. So 5,001 lbs is all it would take to put me over weight and permits r not cheap. Also we had to build a special rail for him to sit on when on the trailer because if he's on a regular rail he is over-height.

in real life. the actual engine was an E2 tank engine. they were all scrapped in the 1950's from my understanding.

in june in strausburg pennsylvania us. there is a real thomas the tank engine. and many old steamers too. it is a train museum. there are videos of them here on you tube just look them up, and another thing it is located in the middle of amish country . most excellent place to tour if you are even in that area and not into stuff like roller coasters and large crowds of people, some amish let outsiders tour there homes and farms to show their way of life.

I loved Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid, and still love trains, but I must say, these real trains with faces on them are pretty creepy. Idiots don't repect the power of a locomotive as it is, the last thing we need is trains with "happy faces" (We really need more like skull and crossbones on the front of engines to make them look more scary. lol. Its kinda like what Carlos Mencia said about hurricanes with names like "Katrina". However, these probably cross very few crossings.

see im quite disappointed.... im 20 now, (yes i know) but when i was young there was never an actual Thomas the Tank painted blue, like there is nowadays (they're even being rebuilt in that shape lol!) instead we got fobbed off with engines we'd never heard of before and Thomas's that were half built and blatenly had a bloke speaking and talking back at you! Nowadays, kids can go to some railways on a thomas day and all the locos will be repainted as they were in the books!!! Im Jealous!!
