I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Mercedes vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and EFi injectors clean as new!
Air cooled engine, that is where the air filter should be. Some were oil filled air filters which made for a messy engine.Beetles have big bore kits available that can make some unreal power from an opposing 4 banger.
@eldiablo68 ive still got the oil one, good and bad thing, ther have internal velocity stacks which this guy has a lack of, that impacts performance a bit. but dont do left hand corners too hard or the oil in the filter comes out like mine did LOL
Holes in the exaust system/muffler do not hurt the engine. it's just exaust leaking out before it goes all the way through the muffler. it's just leaving the engine a bit sooner than it would normally.

Damn, you gotta torque the heads and adjust the valves and check out the exhaust leak before you ruin the engine.
BadBrad23 5 years ago
exhaust leaks don't hurt the engine. they just make the car sound louder.

no no, ofcourse not, It just burns the valves out.

@benni2k no.. who told you that? exhaust leak causes backfiring on deceleration unless its really bad.
